BlackBox’s currently documented interface does not include a verified procedure for adding a custom download server. Its README and release notes identify built-in integrations such as Vikingfile and Archive.org, but do not publish a menu path, field names, URL format, authentication settings, save action, or “test server” command for user-defined servers. You can still test the documented download pipeline safely: update BlackBox, start a download from a documented source, confirm that the file reaches a completed state, and then use ShadowMount when installation or mounting is a separate step.
What BlackBox does on PS5
BlackBox is PS5 homebrew software that combines a storefront with a download manager. It is distributed as an application package through GitHub releases rather than as a commercial console service. The project README describes it as “a homebrew storefront and download manager developed for PS5 consoles.”
The project also states that it does not host game files, copyrighted content, or third-party software, and that users should access only content they are legally entitled to use. A download server you add or evaluate does not change that responsibility.

What the documented integrations provide
Release notes name Vikingfile and Archive.org as catalog or download sources. They also describe fixes and behavior for link capture, mirror-domain handling, and multi-connection downloads. Restricted files on either service may require you to sign in. These are documented integrations, not proof that BlackBox accepts an arbitrary server URL entered by the user.

The custom-server add and test procedure is not published
The official material available for this release does not show where a user-defined server would be added. It does not specify whether BlackBox supports a direct host, mirror, archive, resolver, or another server type entered by the user. It also omits the fields that would be required to configure one: URL or endpoint syntax, protocol, credentials, token handling, headers, save behavior, validation rules, and a built-in test action.
Consequently, there is no verified sequence such as “open this menu, enter this address, press Save, then select Test” that can be given accurately. A menu seen in a different build, a video, or a community fork may not exist in the release you have. Do not paste a guessed address into a payload field or assume that a source listed in release notes is an open proxy for every file.
For a confirmed custom-server workflow, check a newer primary manual, inspect the exact app build on the console, or obtain instructions from the project maintainer. Until one of those provides the fields and validation behavior, treat custom-server setup as unverified rather than following invented steps.

Prepare the PS5 before testing downloads
Testing is meaningful only when the installed BlackBox build and the console firmware are within the documented compatibility boundary. The release notes specifically document PS5 .pkg downloads on firmware 11.60 and below. That statement is a condition for the tested feature, not a guarantee for later firmware versions or for every file type.
- Use content you have legal rights to download and install.
- Check the console firmware before treating a failed package download as a server fault.
- Use a current BlackBox release. Older releases may have different source handling, update behavior, or bugs.
- Have ShadowMount available; a completed download and a successful installation are separate stages.
Install or replace the BlackBox package
The documented installation artifact is PPSA01453.ffpkg. The project’s replacement procedure is intentionally specific:
- Remove an older
PPSA01453.ffpkgfrom/data/homebrewif it is still present. - Uninstall the older BlackBox application.
- Download the desired current release package from the project’s GitHub releases.
- Copy the new
.ffpkginto/data/homebrew. - Trigger installation with ShadowMount.
The project warns, “NEVER use Payload Manager during this process!” The reason given is that blackbox.elf is embedded in the .ffpkg and updates automatically with the package. Using the documented ShadowMount route avoids substituting a different installation method for the one the project describes.

Use the in-app update path when available
For releases that expose the older documented updater, open BlackBox → App settings → Updates, choose check, and then choose install when an update is offered. The download service updates and restarts, and the TV app is installed for the next launch. Newer releases are described as keeping themselves up to date when they open, so the labels and timing can differ by build.
If an update leaves the app unavailable, do not infer that a server failed. Recheck that the package replacement steps were followed, that the file is in /data/homebrew, and that ShadowMount—not Payload Manager—was used for installation.
How to test the documented download pipeline
This procedure tests what BlackBox officially describes: source selection, download completion, and the later mount or installation stage. It does not claim to add a custom server or validate an undocumented endpoint.

- Confirm the build and firmware. Record the BlackBox release you installed and the PS5 firmware. Mark
.pkgcompatibility as an open risk when the console is above firmware 11.60, because the release notes only specify 11.60 and below. - Choose a documented source. Select an item delivered through Vikingfile or Archive.org. If the item is restricted, complete the service’s required login rather than treating an authentication prompt as a BlackBox configuration field.
- Start one small, legally obtained download. A single controlled file makes it easier to distinguish link capture, authentication, transport, and installation problems. Note whether BlackBox captures the link and whether a mirror-domain change is presented.
- Watch the Downloads screen. Record the transition from an active transfer to the completed file-writing state. The release notes distinguish a file that has finished writing from later mounting or installation.
- Verify the file before installing. Confirm that the expected file is present and that its format matches the item you selected. A completed transfer alone does not prove that the package is installable.
- Run the mount or installation stage. Use ShadowMount when the game does not install automatically. Follow its normal mounting flow for the completed file rather than restarting the download.
- Handle image files separately. For an image download such as
.exfat, the release notes say that ShadowMount registration is written to the manual list after completion. Check that list and use the registration there. - Record the result. Keep the source name, whether login was required, link-capture result, mirror behavior, completion state, file format, firmware, and ShadowMount result. These observations provide a reproducible test record without assuming that a custom-server screen exists.

Testing a custom server after its interface is verified
If a later BlackBox manual or the app itself exposes a custom-server feature, test it as a controlled integration rather than assuming that a saved entry works. The following checklist describes observations to capture; it is not a claim that these controls exist in the current documented build.
- Write down the exact server address, protocol, and any path or endpoint shown by the verified instructions.
- Record whether the server requires an account, token, or other authentication and whether BlackBox reports a successful authentication.
- Use a legal test file whose format and size are known before starting the transfer.
- Check whether BlackBox captures the supplied link, follows a redirect, or switches to a mirror domain.
- Observe whether retries or multiple connections are used and whether the server permits them.
- Confirm that the file reaches the completed writing state before judging installation.
- For a package, test ShadowMount installation separately. For an image such as
.exfat, check whether a manual ShadowMount registration is created after completion. - Repeat with authentication disabled only when the server is intentionally public and the content is legally accessible; never expose credentials in screenshots or logs.
A server should be considered usable only when the verified BlackBox UI accepts its configuration, the expected file is written without unexplained corruption, and the subsequent ShadowMount step behaves as documented. A response from the host alone is not proof that BlackBox can parse, resume, or install the result.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing a download server with a package installer
A host can deliver bytes while the console still needs ShadowMount to mount or install them. Diagnose the transfer and installation stages independently.

Using an undocumented menu path
Names such as “Servers,” “Providers,” or “Test endpoint” should not be assumed to exist. Builds can change, and the current official material does not publish those controls. Use only labels visible in your installed build or in a newer primary manual.
Testing outside the stated firmware range
For PS5 .pkg downloads, the documented range is firmware 11.60 and below. A result outside that range cannot establish whether a server works under the supported condition.
Updating with the wrong tool
The project explicitly says not to use Payload Manager for this package replacement. Remove the old package, place the new .ffpkg in /data/homebrew, and install through ShadowMount as documented.

Treating restricted-host login as a BlackBox account
Vikingfile and Archive.org may require their own login for restricted downloads. That requirement belongs to the external host and should not be represented as a universal BlackBox server credential.
