The Xbox app for Windows can install and manage games you own through Xbox or the Microsoft Store, install PC Game Pass titles, and gather installed games from supported third-party PC storefronts into one library. Open the app, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or subscription, find the title under Home, Store, Game Pass, or My Library, and select Install when the Xbox app has installation rights. For a game installed by another storefront, the Xbox app normally provides a library entry and launch point while the original storefront keeps control of ownership, installation, updates, and licensing.
The exact labels and available commands change with the Windows build, Xbox app release, account type, region, and whether a feature is still rolling out. Use the visible control in your version rather than assuming every PC has the same menu.
What the Xbox PC app actually manages
Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a hub for discovering, installing, launching, and managing PC games from Xbox and PC Game Pass. Windows also presents it as a central place for purchased games, subscriptions, friends, and games installed through other PC storefronts. That makes “add a game” mean two different things: installing a title that the Xbox app is allowed to manage, or making an existing installation visible in the app.

The aggregated-library design is an organizer and launcher, not a license converter. Adding a third-party entry does not move ownership to Microsoft, merge achievements or saves automatically, or let the Xbox app bypass the original client’s requirements.

Check these requirements before you add a game
- Use the right Microsoft account. Sign in to the account that purchased the Xbox or Microsoft Store title, or that holds the relevant PC Game Pass entitlement. A different Windows or Xbox account can make a legitimate game look unavailable.
- Run a supported, current setup. Install the latest Xbox app update offered on your PC and keep Windows current. Microsoft changes the layout and integrations over time.
- Confirm the game is a PC product. A console-only entitlement does not automatically create a Windows installation option. A title must also support PC installation in your region and edition.
- Have a usable install location. Keep enough free space on the selected drive and ensure you can write to that location. If the app offers a drive or folder choice, select the location where you want the game managed.
- Keep the original storefront available for third-party games. For an entry from another store, you may need that store’s client installed, signed in, and able to launch the game.
Install or update the Xbox app
- Open the Xbox app for Windows. If it is not installed, obtain it through Microsoft’s normal Windows app-distribution channel, then complete any pending update before troubleshooting library behavior.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account. If the app shows an account switcher, verify the account before searching for a purchase or opening Game Pass.
- Allow the app to finish loading your library and gaming services. A first launch or an update can take longer while account and entitlement information refreshes.
- Restart the app after an update if a tab, store integration, or install button is missing. Feature availability can depend on the app build, Windows version, account type, and region.
Install an Xbox or Microsoft Store PC game
Use this workflow for a game purchased through Xbox or the Microsoft Store. It also applies to a PC Game Pass title while your subscription and account are eligible.
- Choose Home, Store, Game Pass, or My Library from the app’s navigation.
- Search for the game and open its product page. Check that the page identifies a PC version and shows the entitlement you expect.
- Select Install. If you see a choice of drives or an install location, choose the available destination with sufficient space.
- Review any optional components or permissions shown by your build, then confirm the installation.
- Track progress from the app’s download or queue area. Leave the app and Windows gaming services running if the download pauses when they are closed.
- When installation finishes, select Play, or open My Library and launch it from the installed-games view.
If the button says Buy, Join, or otherwise does not offer installation, the account may not own the title, the subscription may not include it, the game may not support your device or region, or the page may be showing a different edition. Do not purchase again until you have checked the signed-in account and edition.
Installing a PC Game Pass title
Open the Game Pass area, select a game, and choose Install. Game Pass access is entitlement-based: if a title leaves the catalog, your subscription expires, or the account changes, the installed files can remain on the drive but the app may stop granting play access. A separate purchase or renewed entitlement is then required according to the game’s listing.

The available location list and folder controls vary by Windows and Xbox app version. Select a drive that is available to your account and has enough capacity. If a location is not offered, do not force the installation into a protected or unrelated folder; first resolve the drive, permissions, or gaming-services configuration that prevents the app from using it.

Find and launch a game in My Library
- Open My Library. If your release uses an installed-games filter or a separate installed view, select that view.
- Use search, sorting, or the recent-items area to locate the title. Microsoft’s aggregated design can show games in both My Library and Most Recent.
- Select the game’s tile to open its page, then choose Play or the available launch command.
- If the title belongs to another storefront, allow the original client to open and complete its sign-in or update checks.
A tile in the library is not proof that the Xbox app installed the files. Look at the game’s source, launch behavior, and available management commands before removing or moving anything.
Manage an installed game
Open the game from My Library or the installed-games view and use its context menu, details page, or management command. The available actions differ by title, source, Windows build, and app version.
View details, add-ons, and content
The game page can expose installed content, downloadable add-ons, and entitlement information. Use the details or add-ons area to see whether an expansion is owned, available through your subscription, or still needs installation. An add-on can require the base game and the correct account even when its tile is visible.

Xbox-managed games generally receive updates through the Xbox app and Windows gaming services. Check the download queue or the game’s management page when an update is pending. For a Steam, Battle.net, or other third-party entry, update controls normally remain in the originating storefront; the Xbox tile may only launch that client.

Repair an Xbox-managed installation
If your version offers Repair, use it from the game’s management menu when files or launch data appear damaged. Repair can verify or replace local components without being the same as a full reinstall. Close the game first and allow the process to finish before launching again.
Move an installed game
When Move is available, open the game’s management options, choose a permitted destination drive, and confirm. The command is not universal: some titles, storage formats, or third-party installations cannot be moved by the Xbox app. If the option is absent, use the original storefront’s documented library-management tool rather than manually dragging folders.
Uninstall safely
Choose Uninstall from the game’s context or management menu and confirm the prompt. Uninstalling removes local game files; it does not normally cancel a purchase or subscription. For a third-party game, remove it through the storefront that installed it when the Xbox app does not provide an uninstall command. Saved data may be synchronized separately, but do not assume that deleting local files removes or preserves every save; check the game’s own save and cloud behavior first.
Use game hubs for per-title information
Microsoft announced game hubs for all PC players in April 2024. Opening a game through the library or sidebar can provide a title-specific space for progress, content and add-ons, friends, captures, and developer news. The exact cards and navigation can vary by game and release.

- Content and add-ons: inspect expansions or related content without leaving the game context.
- Friends and captures: reach social or captured-media features supported by the app and game.
- Developer news: see updates or announcements supplied for that title.
Game hubs add context around a game; they do not change which service owns the license or which client controls a third-party installation.

The Xbox PC app can aggregate installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts when the relevant integration is supported in your release. A supported game can appear automatically in My Library and Most Recent after it is installed through its original client.
- Install the game with the storefront that sold or distributes it, and make sure that client recognizes the installation.
- Open the Xbox app and go to your profile or settings area.
- Find Library & Extensions, or the similarly named library-integration section visible in your build.
- Enable the storefront integration if it is listed. Microsoft’s rollout has changed the names and supported storefront list over time.
- Return to My Library and refresh, restart the Xbox app, or launch the game once from its original client if the tile does not appear immediately.
- Select the tile to launch it. Expect the original storefront to open when it is responsible for authentication, updates, or copy protection.
This process adds visibility, not ownership. The purchase remains tied to the third-party account; the original client may still be required for installation, patches, cloud saves, achievements, or online services. The Xbox app is generally acting as a launcher and organizer for these entries.

What “automatic” appearance means
Automatic appearance depends on a supported integration, the app version, and the storefront’s detectable installed state. It does not mean every title from every store will be indexed. Microsoft has been expanding the catalog and reported that nearly 400 previously undiscoverable or unpurchasable titles had been added to the Xbox app catalog in 2024, but that figure does not guarantee support for every game or storefront on every PC.

Troubleshoot a missing game
The Xbox or Game Pass game is missing
- Check the account shown in the Xbox app against the account that bought the game or holds Game Pass.
- Open the title’s store page directly and confirm that it is a PC edition and that your entitlement is still active.
- Update the Xbox app and Windows, then restart the app so the library can refresh.
- Search by the exact title rather than relying only on a filtered library view.
- If the game is installed but not listed, check the installed-games view and the drive where it was installed.
A third-party game does not appear
- Open the profile or settings area and inspect Library & Extensions.
- Enable the relevant storefront if it is offered, then restart the Xbox app.
- Open the original client and verify that it is signed in and that the game is installed, not merely listed as owned.
- Launch the game once from the original client. Some integrations discover an installation only after that client records its location.
- Accept that the storefront may not yet be supported in your build or region. An unsupported game must continue to be launched and managed from its original client.
The tile launches the wrong client or nothing happens
- Sign in to the originating storefront and let it complete pending updates.
- Confirm that the game’s installation path still exists and that the drive is connected.
- Use the original client to repair or verify the installation when the Xbox app has no repair control.
- Remove a stale library entry only through the available Xbox app or storefront control; do not delete folders manually unless you intend to remove the installation.
The Install button is unavailable
An unavailable button usually indicates an entitlement, edition, platform, region, compatibility, or service-state issue rather than a library-display problem. Recheck the account, open the title page from the Game Pass or Store area, and read the page’s requirements before changing files or reinstalling the app.
Use My Apps when it is available
Xbox Insiders have received a My Apps tab for locating, viewing, and downloading third-party applications and commonly used storefronts. Treat this as preview functionality unless the tab is present in your own build. Insider features can arrive before general release, change labels, or disappear during testing; its presence does not make every storefront a fully Xbox-managed source.
Understand version and rollout differences
The Xbox PC app is updated frequently. A control described as a tab in one release may appear as a filter, context-menu item, profile setting, or library extension in another. Microsoft’s storefront aggregation and game-hub features have rolled out over time, and Insider functionality can precede the public release.
When following any procedure, first identify what your screen actually shows: the account avatar, navigation labels, the game’s source, and the commands available on its tile. If a step names Library & Extensions, My Apps, Move, or Repair and you cannot find it, that absence may reflect your app version, title support, region, or storefront integration rather than a mistake.

The reliable rule is simple: use the Xbox app as the installation and management authority for Xbox, Microsoft Store, and eligible PC Game Pass games; use it as a unified library and launcher for supported third-party installations, while leaving ownership and storefront-specific maintenance with the service that sold the game.
