The fastest WordPress method is to install an llms.txt plugin, configure which public content it may describe, generate the file, and verify it at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. An llms.txt file is an emerging Markdown convention that gives AI agents concise site context and links to more detailed pages. It is not a guaranteed way to improve Google rankings or ChatGPT visibility: the proposal is still open to community input, and plugin documentation notes that no major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that it seeks out these files.
What llms.txt does—and what it does not do
The llms.txt proposal, published by Jeremy Howard on September 3, 2024 and modified August 10, 2026, describes “a proposal to standardise on using an /llms.txt file to provide information to help agents use a website.” The file normally lives at the domain root (for example, https://example.com/llms.txt) or at an equivalent subpath.
It is Markdown, not an XML sitemap. A useful file normally contains:
- An H1 containing the site or project name (the only required section).
- A short blockquote summarizing the site.
- Brief explanatory notes that establish scope, audience, and important policies.
- H2 sections containing Markdown links to authoritative pages, each with a concise description.
The format is intended to fit into an agent’s context window and point to detail only where it is useful. WordPress.com recommends quality over quantity, while the specification recommends keeping the file small and curated. Do not list private, noindex, access-controlled, obsolete, or duplicate pages simply to make the file longer.

Some publishers also expose clean Markdown versions of individual pages. The proposal recommends marking those relationships with rel="alternate" type="text/markdown", and marking the covering llms.txt file with rel="describedby". You can place these relations in HTML <link> elements or HTTP Link headers when your platform supports them.
Choose a WordPress plugin
Two commonly documented plugin routes are Website LLMs.txt and Project LLMs.txt. Their capabilities overlap, but their publishing models and requirements differ.
| Option | Installation and serving | Content controls and output | Requirements or notable features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website LLMs.txt | Install from Plugins → Add New; configure at Settings → LLMs.txt. It can write the file or use rewrites when the host cannot write the web root. | Choose public post types, pages, products, and custom post types. Restricted or non-public content is excluded by default. Supports immediate, daily, or weekly regeneration. | Integrates with Yoast SEO, Rank Math, SEOPress, and AIOSEO. |
| Project LLMs.txt | Install and use its own WordPress admin sidebar entry. It can generate a physical root file or serve through the site. | Produces /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and optional per-page /llms/*.md files. Scans posts, pages, products, and custom post types. |
WordPress 6.4+, PHP 8.1+, and root write permission for physical-file mode. WooCommerce 7.0+ is optional for product support. |
| Open-WP-Club generator | Developer-oriented generator with physical or URL-based output. | Supports /llms.txt, .md URLs, Accept: text/markdown, SEO metadata, custom taxonomies, caching, and developer filters. |
WordPress 6.4+, PHP 8.2+, and Composer. |
For a conventional WordPress site, Website LLMs.txt is the least complicated starting point because its documented path is the normal plugin installer and Settings screen. Choose Project LLMs.txt when you specifically need llms-full.txt or per-page Markdown output. Choose the Open-WP-Club project only if your team can maintain Composer-based software and developer filters.
Install and configure the plugin
1. Check your hosting and content first
- Confirm that you can install plugins and that your PHP and WordPress versions meet the selected plugin’s requirements.
- Decide which public content is genuinely useful to an agent: documentation, product or service pages, About information, policies, and canonical articles.
- Make a list of content that must not be exposed, including private posts, drafts, customer portals, gated downloads, employee information, and pages marked noindex or nofollow.
- If you use a cache, security plugin, CDN, or a host that blocks root-file writes, note that you may need rewrite or cache exclusions.
2. Install from WordPress admin
- Sign in to WordPress.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Website LLMs.txt or Project LLMs.txt, review the publisher and compatibility details, and select Install Now.
- Select Activate.
For Website LLMs.txt, the documented next step is Settings → LLMs.txt. Project LLMs.txt places its controls in a separate admin sidebar entry, so use that entry rather than looking under Settings.
3. Select the material to describe
Enter the site title and a one- or two-sentence description. Enable only the post types and taxonomies that have stable, public meaning. A product catalog may be appropriate for a shop; internal notes, author archives, search results, and thin tag pages usually are not.
Review the plugin’s exclusions for private, restricted, noindex, and nofollow material. Do not assume a page is safe merely because it is technically reachable: if it contains personal data or customer-only instructions, exclude it explicitly. If the plugin offers ordering or section controls, put your most authoritative pages first.
Rank #2
4. Generate and inspect the file
Save the settings and run the plugin’s generate or update action. Open https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a logged-out browser window. The response should be readable Markdown beginning with one H1, not a WordPress login page, HTML error document, or blank response.
Check several links manually. They should resolve over HTTPS, use the preferred canonical host, and describe the current page. Remove redirects, duplicate URLs, campaign parameters, and pages whose summaries no longer match their content. If your plugin supports immediate, daily, or weekly regeneration, choose the schedule that matches your publishing cadence; a rarely changing brochure site does not need hourly generation.

5. Test Markdown variants when available
If the plugin creates per-page Markdown, open a representative .md URL and test the documented Accept: text/markdown response. Confirm that the response is actually Markdown and that an HTML fallback still works for ordinary visitors. Project LLMs.txt can expose optional /llms/*.md pages; the Open-WP-Club generator documents both .md URLs and content negotiation.
Manual routes when a plugin is not suitable
Upload on WordPress.com Business or Commerce
WordPress.com’s documented manual route is available on Business and Commerce plans. Identify high-value pages such as services or products, About, documentation, policies, and important articles. Write their full URLs with short descriptions in Markdown, save the file with the exact name llms.txt, upload it to the site root through SFTP, and visit the public URL to verify it.
This route gives you maximum editorial control but no automatic synchronization. Add a maintenance owner and revisit the file whenever a canonical URL, product line, or policy changes.
Hand-maintained files on self-hosted WordPress
On self-hosted sites, you can place a plain-text Markdown file in the web root if your host permits it. A minimal shape is:
Rank #3
# Example site
> A short description of what this site provides and who it serves.
This file points agents to the most authoritative public pages.
## Documentation
- [Getting started](https://example.com/getting-started): Installation and first steps.
- [API reference](https://example.com/api): Endpoint and parameter documentation.
## Policies
- [Privacy policy](https://example.com/privacy): Current privacy terms.
Replace every example URL with your real canonical URL. A manually maintained file avoids plugin overhead but can become stale, and it does not automatically understand WordPress visibility settings.
Quality and security checklist
- Canonical URLs: Use HTTPS and the same host you advertise elsewhere. Avoid tracking parameters.
- Editorial scope: Prefer a short list of authoritative pages over a dump of every archive and tag.
- Visibility: Exclude private, gated, noindex, nofollow, and access-controlled material unless you have a deliberate reason to expose it.
- Freshness: Regenerate after major publishing changes and verify the scheduled job actually runs.
- Markdown validity: Check that headings, blockquotes, and links render as intended and that descriptions are concise.
- Access controls: Test while logged out and from a second network. A file accidentally protected by basic authentication or a firewall is not useful to agents.
- Cache behavior: Purge page, object, CDN, and security caches after generation if the public response is stale.
- Least exposure: Treat every linked page as intentionally public. Do not place secrets, unpublished pricing, or personal information in the file or its targets.
Troubleshooting common failures
The URL returns a 404
The plugin may not have generated a physical file, the rewrite rule may not be active, or a front-end cache may still hold an earlier routing result. Save the plugin settings, regenerate, clear caches, and retry. If physical-file mode requires root write permission, grant the narrowly scoped permission your host recommends or switch to the plugin’s rewrite mode.
The URL shows a WordPress page or login screen
A conflicting page or security rule may be claiming the /llms.txt path. Search for a page or redirect with that slug, then inspect firewall, maintenance, and authentication rules. Verify in a private browser session.
The file contains private or noindex content
Recheck post-type selections and exclusion settings, then inspect whether a caching layer is serving an older generated copy. Remove the affected links immediately, regenerate, purge caches, and test the public response again. Do not rely solely on robots directives to protect material that should never be disclosed.

Links are wrong, duplicated, or redirected
Update WordPress’s canonical URL settings, remove alternate hostnames and tracking parameters, and regenerate. If the plugin imports SEO metadata, inspect the SEO plugin’s canonical values and noindex rules.
Markdown pages return HTML
Confirm that the URL is one the plugin actually generates and send the documented Accept: text/markdown header if content negotiation is supported. A CDN or cache may be ignoring the header; vary or bypass that cache for Markdown responses.
Automatic updates stop
Check WordPress cron, host-level scheduled-task restrictions, and plugin logs. A daily or weekly schedule is only useful if the site’s scheduler runs reliably. Regenerate manually while diagnosing the job.
What llms.txt means for AI visibility
Do not promise that adding the file will make a site appear in ChatGPT answers. WordPress.com says not all AI systems use llms.txt, and Project LLMs.txt documentation states that no major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that it seeks out these files. The proposal does describe “thousands of sites” publishing one as of its August 10, 2026 modification, but that is a descriptive statement by the proposal author, not a measured adoption study.
The practical benefit today is clearer machine-readable orientation: an agent that chooses to fetch the file can quickly discover your best pages and their purpose. Keep investing in ordinary information architecture, accessible HTML, accurate metadata, crawlable canonical pages, and trustworthy content; llms.txt supplements those foundations rather than replacing them.

If your immediate need is to verify how the public file renders, ScreenshotNeo can capture the result with one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Replace the URL with your public llms.txt page:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt"}, timeout=90)
open("llms.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to test the public page.
