To add an image in Google Sheets on a computer, select a cell, choose Insert > Image, then choose Image in cell or Image over cells. Select the file or image source and click Open or Select. Use the IMAGE function instead when the image is available at a web URL and should be generated from a formula.
The placement choice matters: an in-cell image belongs to one cell and that cell cannot also contain text; an over-cells image is a separate object floating above the grid. The sections below explain each method, sizing controls, mobile steps, limitations, troubleshooting, and an automated option.
Choose the right image method first
| What you have | Best method | Where the image lives |
|---|---|---|
| A file on your computer, phone, tablet, or another offered source | Insert > Image | Inside one cell or above the grid |
| A publicly accessible image URL | IMAGE formula |
Inside the formula’s cell |
| An image that must sit beside text or cover several cells | Image over cells | As a movable object above the grid |
Insert an image with the Google Sheets menu on a computer
- Open the spreadsheet and click the destination cell.
- Choose Insert > Image.
- Select Image in cell or Image over cells.
- Choose an image source, select the image, and click Open or Select.
Google Sheets may take a moment to display a pasted or uploaded image. You can also copy an image from your computer or the web and paste it into the spreadsheet.
Image in cell
An in-cell image is attached to a particular cell. It moves with that cell when you cut, paste, or otherwise move the cell. The cell cannot simultaneously contain text, a number, or another formula, so use a neighboring cell for a caption, product code, or description.

Image over cells
An over-cells image is a separate visual object above the grid. It can be dragged to another location and resized with its controls, making it useful for logos, diagrams, signatures, or images that need to span several columns. Because it is not the cell’s value, surrounding cells can still contain data.
Change an image’s placement
Use the image’s menu to move between in-cell and over-cells placement. If an in-cell image needs to go to another cell, cut and paste it. Review the resulting position after inserting rows or columns, especially when an over-cells object overlaps a changing table.
Display a URL image with the IMAGE function
When the source is a URL, enter this formula in a cell:
=IMAGE("https://example.com/image.png")
You can keep the URL in another cell and reference it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
=IMAGE(A2)
The documented syntax is IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]). The URL must include a protocol such as https:// and must be quoted text or a reference to a cell containing the URL.

IMAGE sizing modes
| Mode | Behavior | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (default) | Fits the image inside the cell while preserving its aspect ratio. | Best first choice when the whole image should remain visible. |
| 2 | Stretches or compresses the image to fit the cell, ignoring its original proportions. | Use only when distortion is acceptable. |
| 3 | Displays the image at its original size. | Useful when exact dimensions matter, but the cell may crop it. |
| 4 | Uses the supplied pixel height and width. | Use for a consistent thumbnail size. |
Examples:
=IMAGE(A2,1)fits the URL in A2 without changing its proportions.=IMAGE(A2,2)fills the cell but may distort the image.=IMAGE(A2,3)uses the original dimensions and can be cropped by a smaller cell.=IMAGE(A2,4,120,180)requests a 120-pixel height and 180-pixel width.
IMAGE modes do not resize the spreadsheet’s row or column. If an image is too small, adjust the row height or column width separately. If it looks stretched, switch from mode 2 to mode 1.
Supported files and URL restrictions
- Menu insertion supports PNG, JPG, and GIF files under 50 MB.
- SVG is not supported for menu insertion or the IMAGE function.
- IMAGE cannot use URLs hosted at
drive.google.com; use an image URL that the function can access directly. - A URL that requires a sign-in, expires quickly, or returns an HTML page instead of image data may fail even when it opens in your browser.
Add an image in the Google Sheets mobile app
Android
- Open the spreadsheet in the Google Sheets app.
- Tap the destination cell, then tap Insert image.
- Choose In cell or Over cells.
- Select a source and choose the image.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the spreadsheet in the Google Sheets app.
- Select the cell and tap Insert image.
- Choose whether the image belongs in a cell or over cells.
- Select the image and confirm.
The mobile apps also provide controls for moving and deleting images. Exact button placement can vary as the apps’ interface changes, but the in-cell versus over-cells decision remains the key step.
Practical layouts that avoid common problems
Product catalog
Put the thumbnail in column A, product name and SKU in columns B and C, and use an in-cell image so each picture follows its row. Increase row height and column width for consistent visibility.
Dashboard logo
Use an over-cells image so the logo can span header columns without occupying a data cell.
Image register driven by URLs
Store URLs in column A and use =IMAGE(A2,4,100,100) in column B. Fill the formula down, then change a URL in column A to refresh the corresponding image.

Troubleshooting
The Insert menu does not show an image option
Confirm that you opened a Google Sheets spreadsheet rather than a read-only preview or another Google editor. If you have view-only access, request edit permission or make an editable copy.
The image is in the wrong place
Check whether you selected In cell or Over cells. An in-cell image follows its cell; an over-cells image must be dragged. Use the image menu to change placement.

An in-cell image occupies the cell’s content, so put text in an adjacent cell or convert the image to over-cells placement.
The IMAGE formula returns an error or a blank result
- Check that the URL starts with
http://orhttps://. - Ensure the URL is quoted or points to a cell containing the URL.
- Replace a
drive.google.comURL with a directly accessible image URL. - Confirm that the response is PNG, JPG, or GIF rather than SVG or an HTML login page.
- Try mode 1 before mode 3 or 4, and verify that the row and column are large enough to show the result.
The image looks distorted
Mode 2 deliberately ignores aspect ratio. Use mode 1 to preserve proportions, or mode 4 with dimensions that match the source ratio.
The image is cropped
Mode 3 keeps the original size, so a smaller cell can hide part of the image. Increase the row or column dimensions, or switch to mode 1.

If your workflow starts with a webpage rather than an image file, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot that you can then insert into Sheets. Its API accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. A basic call is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- For a few static images, menu insertion is simplest and avoids dependence on a remote URL.
- For a changing catalog, URL formulas reduce manual uploads but depend on the image host remaining reachable.
- Large images and tall rows make a sheet slower to scroll and harder to print. Use smaller source files or mode 4 thumbnails.
- Over-cells images are convenient for presentation layouts but require more careful positioning when the grid changes.
- ScreenshotNeo charges only for clean shots; failed loads and other listed non-clean outcomes are not billed. Its paid plans and included monthly quantities are fixed by plan, so choose a tier based on expected capture volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one Google Sheets cell contain both an image and text?
No. An image inserted in a cell occupies that cell’s content. Put the text in another cell or use an image over the cells.
Which IMAGE mode preserves the picture’s proportions?
Mode 1 preserves aspect ratio while fitting the image inside the cell. Mode 2 fills the cell but can distort it.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use a Google Drive link with IMAGE?
No. Google’s IMAGE documentation excludes URLs hosted at drive.google.com; use a directly accessible image URL instead.
The Bottom Line
Use Insert > Image for local files and choose in-cell or over-cells placement. Use =IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]) for URL-driven images, and adjust the sheet dimensions separately when sizing is not right.
