The right option depends on how you edit pages and which event details and layouts you need.
Choose a timeline plugin that fits your workflow
Two options listed in the WordPress plugin directory illustrate the main approaches: a Gutenberg-focused block, or a plugin-managed timeline displayed with a shortcode. Compare their editing workflows and event fields before installing.
| Option | Editing and display | Content and layouts described in its listing | Directory compatibility details at research time |

These are WordPress.org listing details observed in 2026, not guarantees of future compatibility. Check the current listing, your WordPress version, and your PHP version before installing. The bPlugins listing describes a free plugin and also identifies Pro features; Cool Plugins’ listing presents horizontal layout and multiple timelines as Pro features, so check each listing for the feature set available to you: bPlugins Timeline Block and Cool Timeline.

Create the timeline and add event entries
Set up the timeline in the plugin’s interface or editor, then enter the details it supports. Event Timeline Feed’s listed fields include title, description, event link, icon, date, and time. For an agenda or schedule, bPlugins describes an Event Schedule block for sessions and events.
Choose dates and descriptions that make the order understandable to visitors. If you need times, links, or icons, confirm that the selected plugin supports them in the version and plan you intend to use.
Insert the timeline on a page
Use the Gutenberg block
In the Block Editor, open the page where the timeline should appear and insert the timeline block provided by the plugin. Configure its available settings, then preview the page to check that the layout works with your content.
Use a shortcode
Event Timeline Feed documents this shortcode pattern:

[timeline_feed id=ID]
Replace ID with the ID of the timeline you created, then add the shortcode to the page or post where it should display. With bPlugins, copy the generated shortcode from the timeline you configured and paste it into the intended post, page, or widget.
Check the result before publishing
- Confirm that events appear in the intended chronological order and that their dates and times are correct.
- Check that descriptions, event links, and any icons you added display as expected.
- Preview the page on the screen sizes your audience uses, especially if you selected a horizontal layout.
- If a shortcode does not display a timeline, check that the ID matches the timeline you created and that the plugin is active.
- If you are choosing a plugin for a site with an older WordPress or PHP version, compare your installed versions with the plugin’s current minimum requirements.
The listings’ installation steps and compatibility figures can change. The bPlugins Timeline Block changelog includes a July 9, 2026 entry for version 1.5.3 that says it added WordPress 7.0 support; check the current changelog and listing for later changes.
