“AOL icon” can mean either a shortcut to the installed AOL Desktop Gold program or a shortcut that opens AOL Mail at https://mail.aol.com. They are different shortcuts. For Desktop Gold, use its notification-area menu, the program’s Help menu, or the Windows Start menu. For AOL Mail, create a shortcut from Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. A shortcut does not install Desktop Gold, create a subscription, or delete your online mail. Choose the procedure below that matches the destination you want.
Which AOL icon do you want on the desktop?
Decide where the icon should take you before creating it. Desktop Gold launches a Windows application that must already be installed. An AOL Mail shortcut opens the website in a browser and requires an internet connection.
| Shortcut type | What opens | What you need | Best method |
|---|---|---|---|
| AOL Desktop Gold | The installed Desktop Gold application | Desktop Gold installed on Windows | Right-click its notification-area icon and choose Create Desktop Shortcut |
| AOL Mail website | https://mail.aol.com in a browser | A browser and an internet connection | Create the shortcut from Chrome, Edge, or Firefox |
If you only need to read and send mail, the website shortcut avoids installing Desktop Gold. If you use features that belong to the legacy desktop application, create the Desktop Gold shortcut instead.

How do I add an AOL Desktop Gold icon from the notification area?
This is usually the quickest method when Desktop Gold is installed and running in the Windows notification area.
- Look near the Windows clock on the right side of the taskbar.
- If you do not see the AOL symbol, select the Expand arrow to display hidden notification-area icons.
- Right-click the AOL Desktop Gold icon.
- Select Create Desktop Shortcut. Some Desktop Gold versions use the wording Create new desktop shortcut for the same command.
AOL documents both labels in its guides for restoring a missing AOL Desktop Gold icon or shortcut and troubleshooting AOL Desktop Gold. The command creates a Windows shortcut; it does not copy the application or change your account.
If the command is not visible, make sure you are right-clicking the AOL Desktop Gold icon itself, not an unrelated AOL browser tab or a generic Windows notification. The small arrow beside the clock may be necessary before the icon can be selected. Once the shortcut is created, close or minimize Desktop Gold and look on an empty area of the desktop.
How do I create the Desktop Gold shortcut when the tray icon is missing?
You can open the installed program directly from its local application folder and then use Desktop Gold’s own shortcut command.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
%localappdata%exactly and press Enter. - Open the AOL Desktop folder.
- Double-click the AOL Desktop application file to launch Desktop Gold.
- Open the application’s Help menu.
- Select Create new desktop shortcut.
This procedure is the fallback described in AOL’s Desktop Gold troubleshooting instructions. If the AOL Desktop folder is not present, Desktop Gold may not be installed for the current Windows account, or the installation may need repair.
The Run command uses the current user’s local application-data location; it is not a web address and should not be entered into a browser. Type the percent signs and the word localappdata without extra spaces. If Windows opens a different folder or reports that the location cannot be found, return to the Start-menu method or install Desktop Gold first.
How do I add AOL Desktop Gold from the Windows Start menu?
Windows can make a desktop shortcut by dragging an installed application from the Start app list.
- Open Start.
- Select All or All apps, depending on your Windows version.
- Find AOL Desktop Gold.
- Drag that entry from the app list onto an empty area of the desktop.
Windows creates a shortcut while leaving the original program entry in Start. Microsoft describes this desktop-icon behavior in Customize the Desktop Icons in Windows. If dragging is unavailable, use the notification-area or in-application method instead.
Drag the named application entry, not a search result for the AOL website. If Start shows no AOL Desktop Gold entry, Windows has no usable installed entry to drag for that account. That usually means the program is not installed, the installation is incomplete, or you are looking for AOL Mail rather than Desktop Gold.

What if AOL Desktop Gold is not installed?
A shortcut cannot install an application that is absent. AOL currently lists these minimum Desktop Gold requirements:
- Windows 10 or newer
- At least 1 GB of RAM
- A 1 GHz or faster processor
- Screen resolution of 1024 × 720 or higher
- 512 MB of free hard-drive space
- An internet connection
AOL makes Desktop Gold available through qualifying AOL Advantage Plans and through a Desktop Gold trial or subscription. Availability and subscription prompts can vary by account. Meeting the hardware requirements does not by itself create eligibility for a paid plan.
Install Desktop Gold before creating its icon
- Download Desktop Gold through MyBenefits, MySubscriptions, or the official AOL confirmation email.
- Open File Explorer and select Downloads.
- Double-click Install_AOL_Desktop.
- Select Run if Windows asks for permission.
- Select Install Now.
- Restart the computer when the installer requests it.
The complete AOL procedure is in Download, install, or uninstall AOL Desktop Gold. After installation and restart, use one of the Desktop Gold shortcut methods above. Downloading an installer without running it does not add an icon, and running the installer without completing the restart may leave the application unavailable until Windows is restarted.
Does Windows 10 still meet the requirement?
AOL’s listed requirement is Windows 10 or newer, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That means Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update security fixes or technical support from Microsoft. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are below AOL’s current requirement and are also unsupported by Microsoft. See AOL’s installation requirements and Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support notice before installing Desktop Gold on an older computer.
This operating-system distinction matters even when an older computer appears fast enough. A machine can have 1 GB or more of RAM and enough disk space yet still fall outside AOL’s current Windows requirement. Do not assume that finding an old installer or an old shortcut makes an unsupported Windows version a supported one.
How do I add an AOL Mail icon with Google Chrome?
Chrome’s current shortcut command is in a different menu than older instructions often show. Create it while the official AOL Mail page is open.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Google Chrome.
- Go to https://mail.aol.com.
- Select the three-dot More button in the upper-right corner.
- Select Cast, save, and share.
- Select Create shortcut….
- Enter a name such as AOL Mail.
- Select Create.
Google documents this current path in Create shortcuts for websites. Older pages that say More tools > Create shortcut refer to an earlier Chrome menu layout.
Open the exact mail address before choosing the command. If you create the shortcut while the general AOL homepage is open, Chrome saves that homepage instead. The resulting icon is still a valid website shortcut, but it will not go directly to the mailbox. The shortcut can be named “AOL Mail” even though the browser remains Chrome.
How do I add AOL Mail as an app-style icon with Microsoft Edge?
Edge can install the AOL Mail site as a progressive web app. The resulting shortcut opens a separate app-style window instead of an ordinary browser tab.

Microsoft describes the installation, management, and shortcut controls in Install, manage, or uninstall apps in Microsoft Edge. Edge’s site-as-an-app option is useful if you want AOL Mail separated from regular browsing windows.

How do I create an AOL Mail shortcut with Mozilla Firefox?
Firefox creates a website shortcut by dragging the site identity icon to the desktop. The shortcut opens in Windows’ default browser, which may be Firefox or another browser.
- Open Firefox and visit https://mail.aol.com.
- Resize the Firefox window so part of the desktop is visible.
- Click and hold the padlock icon at the left of the address bar.
- Drag the padlock onto the desktop.
- Release the mouse button.
Mozilla explains this behavior in Create a desktop shortcut to a website. Because Windows associates the shortcut with the default browser, change the default-browser setting if you need it to open somewhere else.
The padlock is the site-identity control at the left edge of the address bar, not the tab’s favicon or the page logo. Keep Firefox and the desktop visible during the drag; maximizing the window leaves nowhere to drop the shortcut. The shortcut does not force Firefox to become the default browser.

If you completed one of the procedures but see no icon, Windows may be hiding all desktop icons rather than rejecting the AOL shortcut.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select View.
- Make sure Show desktop icons is enabled.
Microsoft’s desktop-icon instructions are at Customize the Desktop Icons in Windows. This display setting affects visibility only; it is unrelated to AOL sign-in, installation, or mailbox data.
After enabling the setting, look again on the desktop and refresh it if necessary. If other desktop icons are missing too, the display setting is the likely cause. If only AOL is absent, recreate the shortcut from the appropriate application or browser rather than changing AOL account settings.
Why does the shortcut open the wrong AOL page or program?
A shortcut stores the destination that was selected when it was created. Recreate it from the exact destination you want rather than editing an unrelated AOL icon.

- For AOL Mail, open https://mail.aol.com first, then create the browser shortcut.
- For Desktop Gold, use the AOL Desktop Gold notification-area icon or the application’s Help > Create new desktop shortcut command.
- Do not use a shortcut to the general AOL homepage when the intended destination is AOL Mail.
Deleting and recreating a shortcut changes only the local link. AOL says mail is stored online and can be reached after signing in from another computer or browser; its explanation is in Can I access AOL Mail from another computer?
A wrong destination does not indicate that messages moved or that the account was replaced. Check the address or application named by the shortcut, then create a new one from the correct starting point. For webmail, signing in from another browser or computer should show the same online mailbox and settings.
What should I do if Desktop Gold asks for a subscription?
Creating an icon does not create or restore a Desktop Gold subscription. AOL’s current Desktop Gold information says some users may see a notice requiring an active subscription. If you do not want to subscribe, AOL directs users to access mail through mail.aol.com instead.
Read AOL’s current product information at AOL Desktop Gold and distinguish the application requirement from the website option. A website shortcut remains a browser link even when Desktop Gold is installed.
If your immediate goal is email access, do not keep reinstalling the application in an attempt to remove the notice. Use one of the browser procedures instead. The browser route may still ask you to sign in or verify the account, but it does not turn a web shortcut into a Desktop Gold entitlement.
Which method should you use?
| Your goal | Recommended route | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Launch an already-installed Desktop Gold application | Notification-area icon or Start-menu drag | Windows application shortcut |
| Recover a Desktop Gold shortcut when its tray icon is absent | Run %localappdata%, open AOL Desktop, then use Help |
Desktop Gold shortcut created from the application |
| Open AOL Mail in a regular browser window | Chrome shortcut or Firefox drag-and-drop | Website shortcut |
| Open AOL Mail in a separate app-style window | Edge’s Install this site as an app | Edge web-app shortcut |
| Use AOL Mail without Desktop Gold | Any browser method | Online mailbox access at mail.aol.com |
Choose Desktop Gold only when that installed Windows application is specifically what you need. Choose a browser shortcut when simplicity and direct mail access matter more. Edge is the practical choice for an app-style window, while Chrome and Firefox create conventional website links using their own current procedures.
What does an AOL desktop shortcut not do?
- It does not install AOL Desktop Gold.
- It does not turn an AOL Mail website link into the Desktop Gold application.
- It does not create a subscription or bypass a subscription notice.
- It does not delete, move, or recreate mail stored in your online account.
- It does not force a Firefox-created shortcut to open in Firefox if another browser is Windows’ default.
These distinctions explain most apparent “missing icon” or “wrong shortcut” problems: the icon is a local pointer, while the application, browser, subscription status, and online mailbox are separate things.

To remove an unwanted icon, right-click it and select Delete, then confirm. This removes the desktop shortcut, not AOL Desktop Gold and not messages in AOL Mail. To replace it, delete the incorrect shortcut and recreate one from either the AOL Mail address or the Desktop Gold application, depending on your goal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the icon returns after deletion, check whether it is being recreated by an Edge web-app installation or by a managed Windows account. Remove the corresponding app from Edge’s edge://apps page when appropriate, rather than repeatedly deleting only the desktop link.

Quick checks before you troubleshoot further
- Confirm whether you want Desktop Gold or the AOL Mail website.
- For Desktop Gold, verify that the application appears in Start or that the AOL Desktop folder exists under
%localappdata%. - For webmail, verify that the browser is open to
https://mail.aol.com, not the general AOL homepage. - Check that Windows is set to show desktop icons.
- Remember that an internet connection is required for AOL Mail and is also listed among Desktop Gold’s requirements.
These checks separate a missing local shortcut from an absent installation, an incorrect web destination, and an account sign-in issue. They also prevent you from changing mailbox settings when the only problem is a hidden or incorrectly created desktop link.
Common outdated instructions to avoid
Instructions that say to right-click “AOL Mail” and choose Create shortcut are not a universal current Windows procedure. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox expose different commands. In Chrome specifically, the current route is More > Cast, save, and share > Create shortcut…, not the older More tools > Create shortcut wording. Likewise, finding or downloading a desktop icon does not install Desktop Gold, and a website shortcut is not the Desktop Gold application.
When a guide tells you to use a generic AOL homepage link, compare it with your intended destination. Use https://mail.aol.com for direct AOL Mail access. For the application, create the link from Desktop Gold itself so Windows records the installed program correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put the AOL icon on the taskbar instead of the desktop?
Yes. After creating the shortcut, right-click it and choose Show more options if necessary, then select Pin to taskbar when Windows offers that command. Pinning creates another local launch point and does not alter the AOL account or subscription.
Will an AOL Mail shortcut remember my password?
The shortcut itself stores only a website address. Whether you remain signed in depends on the browser’s cookies, account security settings, and any verification prompts; never enable password saving on a shared Windows computer unless its security policy allows it.
Can I rename the AOL desktop icon after creating it?
Yes. Select the icon, press F2 (or right-click and choose Rename), type the new name, and press Enter. Renaming changes the label only; the destination remains unchanged.
Why does double-clicking the AOL icon show a sign-in page again?
A browser shortcut can require a fresh sign-in after cookies expire, private browsing is used, account security changes, or the browser clears site data. Enter your AOL credentials at the official mail address and review the browser’s cookie or privacy settings if repeated sign-ins continue.

No. Deleting removes only the local shortcut. AOL Mail is stored online, so you can open mail.aol.com from another browser or computer and sign in to reach the account.
Can I create a Desktop Gold icon if AOL Desktop Gold is not listed in Start?
Not with the Start-menu drag method. Check %localappdata% for the AOL Desktop folder, or install Desktop Gold through AOL’s official MyBenefits, MySubscriptions, or confirmation-email download before creating the shortcut.
Why does my Firefox-created shortcut open in another browser?
Firefox creates a website link, but Windows opens that link in the computer’s default browser. Set Firefox as the default browser if that is where you want the AOL Mail shortcut to open.
Does an AOL Mail shortcut require Desktop Gold?
No. The browser shortcut goes directly to https://mail.aol.com and requires a browser and internet connection, but it does not require the Desktop Gold application.
The Bottom Line
Use the AOL Desktop Gold tray icon, its Help menu, or the Start-menu drag method for the installed Windows application. Use https://mail.aol.com with Chrome, Edge, or Firefox for webmail. If the icon is missing, check hidden desktop icons and recreate the shortcut from the correct destination; deleting a shortcut never deletes your online AOL Mail.
