To add a YouTube stream key to FFmpeg on Ubuntu, copy both the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then use them together as FFmpeg’s streaming destination. The key alone is not the destination: the server URL tells FFmpeg where to connect, and the key identifies the stream.
Before you start
- A suitable FFmpeg binary installed on Ubuntu. The command-line steps below are not tied to a particular Ubuntu release or package build.
- A YouTube channel enabled to live stream. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours; the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s stated limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These platform rules can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and limits.
- A video or other input that FFmpeg can read.
FFmpeg package availability and protocol support can vary by Ubuntu release and build. Check your installed package’s documentation rather than assuming a particular installation command or RTMPS support.
Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use, then open its Stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the values from Live Control Room; do not guess an endpoint or reuse a key from another stream.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in examples, screenshots, shared logs, or source control. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value anywhere your encoder uses it. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Build and run the FFmpeg command
For a file input, a practical template is:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Replace INPUT with your video file path, and replace SERVER_URL and STREAM_KEY with the values from Live Control Room. They are placeholders, not literal strings. Follow the endpoint format YouTube displays: the server path and key convention can vary, so do not append or alter components blindly. FFmpeg’s documented pattern uses -re for real-time file streaming and sends FLV output to an RTMP destination; the codec options above are an illustrative choice, not universal requirements or a tested configuration. Keep the command containing your real key private. Shell history, process listings, terminal recordings, or logs may expose command-line arguments, depending on how you run and capture the command. Avoid sharing them with the key intact.

Choose RTMP or RTMPS
Use the protocol that matches the URL YouTube provides in Live Control Room. YouTube shows the regular RTMP URL by default; to use the secure option, reveal and copy its RTMPS URL. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. FFmpeg documents both protocols, but RTMPS availability depends on how the installed FFmpeg build was compiled. You can inspect available protocols with ffmpeg -protocols; look for rtmp or rtmps. This check reports the protocols available in your local binary, not whether your network or YouTube connection will succeed. For an RTMPS connection, use the exact secure URL copied from Live Control Room in place of SERVER_URL. If you encounter a relevant SSL error, YouTube advises checking that both the protocol and host use rtmps; port 443 may help in some cases. Do not change the destination unless it matches the secure endpoint YouTube provides.

Start the stream in YouTube
- Run the FFmpeg command and check that it remains connected without reporting an error.
- For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the incoming preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live. Starting the encoder does not necessarily make a scheduled stream public.
- For an immediate-start stream, YouTube’s flow may create the watch page and make the stream live when the encoder starts. Follow the state shown in Live Control Room.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
No incoming preview
- Confirm that the intended stream is selected and that you copied its exact server URL and key.
- Check that your channel is eligible for live streaming and that first-time activation has completed.
- If the encoder still fails to start, YouTube recommends getting a new key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder with it.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout
- Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than changing an RTMP URL by guesswork.
- Check that both scheme and host use
rtmps, and confirm that your FFmpeg build lists RTMPS inffmpeg -protocols. - For certain SSL errors, try explicit port 443 if appropriate for the endpoint and your network.
Scheduled stream stays in waiting or preview state
Keep FFmpeg running, wait for the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. A preview means the encoder is sending an incoming feed; it is not by itself confirmation that the scheduled broadcast has started for viewers.

The key was exposed or is rejected
Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the destination used by FFmpeg. Remove or protect copies of the old key in scripts, shell history, logs, and other stored locations where you placed it.
