Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer if every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases; if not, normalize the clips with the concat filter and re-encode them.
What the countdown slate does
The slate is part of the audio-video feed FFmpeg sends to YouTube. It is not a separate YouTube broadcast and does not schedule another event. YouTube treats a broadcast as a watchable event and a stream as the incoming audio-video feed; a stream can be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
This method suits a fixed sequence of prerecorded files. For a changing schedule or clips selected dynamically, you would need a supervisory process or live-switching workflow; the commands below do not provide that automation.
1. Choose the slate’s duration and format
Decide how long the countdown should run—for example, 30 or 60 seconds—and set its resolution, frame rate, and audio behavior. Match the playlist’s dimensions and frame rate where practical. Decide whether the slate should be silent, carry music, or preserve continuous background audio. If the other playlist clips have audio, giving the slate an audio stream too can help keep the stream layout consistent.

2. Generate a countdown clip
FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes the color source for a background and the drawtext filter for overlays. A text expression based on elapsed clip time can display a changing countdown. Provide a font file explicitly with fontfile if FFmpeg cannot find a suitable font on your system.
Use your chosen duration and output format when generating the slate. The exact command depends on your desired countdown design, installed FFmpeg filters and fonts, frame rate, resolution, and audio choice. Check that the resulting file actually has the intended duration and stream layout before adding it to the playlist.
3. Choose how to concatenate the files
Use the concat demuxer when the files already match
The concat demuxer reads files sequentially and adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Matching audio stream layout also matters: a slate without audio between clips that have audio can cause a layout change. See the concat demuxer documentation.

If duration metadata is inaccurate, timestamp adjustment can produce artifacts. The demuxer supports an explicit duration directive for cases where a file’s duration metadata is wrong; consult the documentation before using it.

If the clips differ in parameters or stream layout, use FFmpeg’s concat filter workflow and re-encode them to a common format. The FFmpeg concatenation FAQ distinguishes this approach from the concat demuxer. Re-encoding adds CPU work and may reduce quality, so choose settings that your machine can sustain and inspect the resulting files before streaming.

4. Put the slate between playlist videos
Create a text playlist with one file directive per item, in playback order. For example, this sequence inserts the same countdown after each video:

file 'countdown.mp4'Save it as playlist.ffconcat. The optional ffconcat version 1.0 signature must be exact and appear on the first line for automatic format recognition. Escape file paths correctly, especially if they contain special characters. The example assumes the files meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements.
5. Send the playlist to YouTube Live

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the current server URL and stream key from the encoder setup. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this process.

Start FFmpeg with the playlist as input and the YouTube ingest endpoint and key as output. This illustrative template re-encodes to H.264 video and AAC audio; replace the placeholders with the endpoint and key shown in YouTube Studio:

Confirm that your installed FFmpeg supports the input options and encoding choices you use, and follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Select encoding settings appropriate for your stream and machine. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in public logs or shared scripts.

For a scheduled event, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live. Starting FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not by itself start the scheduled broadcast for viewers.
6. Check playback before relying on it live
- Confirm the total playlist duration and each slate’s actual duration.
- Check that video and audio continue cleanly across every transition.
- Verify that the countdown starts and ends at the intended times.
- Test with a local output or a private or unlisted scheduled stream before using the sequence for a public event.
These checks are especially useful with the concat demuxer because timestamp adjustment depends on file durations. YouTube Help currently says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is a YouTube platform condition, not a limit on FFmpeg playlist length, and may change.
