To send a prerecorded video to YouTube through Restream, connect the channel in Channels > Add New > YouTube, then schedule the video or a playlist through Restream’s Pre-recorded livestream workflow. You do not need to create a Custom RTMP destination or keep an encoder running for that scheduled-file workflow. Restream says the scheduled video starts automatically at its scheduled time.

Choose the right Restream workflow

“RTMP destination” can mean different things in Restream. For the usual task—sending a prerecorded file to your YouTube channel—the straightforward route is Restream’s native YouTube connection followed by its Pre-recorded livestream scheduler. RTMP URL-and-key setup is relevant when connecting an existing YouTube event as a Custom RTMP channel, or when sending live encoder output; those are separate workflows.

What you want to do Use this Restream path Important distinction
Schedule a prerecorded file or playlist on your YouTube channel Connect YouTube under Channels, then create a Pre-recorded livestream Restream says the scheduled playback starts automatically. Restream Help Center
Attach an already-created YouTube event Edit the YouTube channel in Restream’s RTMP setup and select the event This uses the connected YouTube integration’s event selection. See Restream’s existing-event guide.
Connect an existing YouTube event by its URL and stream key Add a Custom RTMP channel Restream says Custom RTMP requires a paid plan; some API-dependent Restream features are unavailable for custom channels. Restream’s existing-event guide
Send a live encoder output through Restream Create an Encoder | RTMP stream and enter Restream’s URL and key in the encoder This is a live-input workflow, not the scheduled prerecorded-file process. Restream’s encoder guide

Restream’s documentation links supplied for these workflows do not include the article-specific page URLs, so the links above point to the relevant help centers rather than guessing a path. In your dashboard, labels and options can depend on the account and event configuration.

Before you start

  • Use the Google account that owns the YouTube channel. Restream says a channel manager or editor is not sufficient to connect it through the native integration. If the wrong channel appears, check which Google account you authorized. Restream’s YouTube guide
  • Enable YouTube live streaming. Restream says first-time activation requires phone verification and can involve a 24-hour wait before streaming is available. Restream’s YouTube guide
  • Prepare your video and event details. Decide whether to schedule one video or a playlist, and confirm the intended date, time, and YouTube destination in Restream before scheduling.

Add your YouTube channel to Restream

  1. Sign in to Restream and open Channels.
  2. Select Add New > YouTube.
  3. Choose the Google account that owns the channel you want to use.
  4. Review and grant the requested authorization. Confirm that the intended YouTube channel appears among your connected channels.

If YouTube is not available or the channel does not appear, first verify the account you selected and whether YouTube live streaming is enabled. Restream’s guide identifies channel ownership and YouTube’s activation requirement as prerequisites. Restream’s YouTube guide

Schedule the prerecorded video

  1. In Restream, choose Pre-recorded livestream.
  2. Choose Video for a single file or Playlist for multiple files.
  3. Select the video file or files you want to play.
  4. Enter the event details and choose the scheduled date and time.
  5. Select the connected YouTube channel as a destination.
  6. Review the selected content, schedule, and destination, then schedule the livestream.

Restream says that a scheduled video or playlist goes live automatically at the scheduled time; its documented file-scheduling workflow does not require you to start an external encoder at that moment. Confirm the event and destination in your own dashboard, since schedule settings and event configuration are account-specific. Restream’s prerecorded scheduling guide

If you already created a YouTube event

If the YouTube event already exists, you can use Restream’s event-selection route rather than treating every case as a new destination:

Restream also documents connecting an existing event as a Custom RTMP channel: copy the event’s stream URL and key from YouTube Live Dashboard, then add them in Restream as a Custom RTMP destination. Restream says this option requires a paid plan and that API-dependent features such as Restream Chat and Analytics do not work with custom channels. Check your current plan and feature needs before choosing it. Restream’s existing-event guide

When RTMP credentials are actually needed

For a live encoder source, Restream’s separate path is to create an Encoder | RTMP stream, enable the desired destination, and copy Restream’s URL and key into your streaming software. YouTube’s encoder instructions likewise use the YouTube server URL and stream key in an encoder. Those steps apply when an encoder is sending a live input; they are not required simply to schedule a prerecorded file in Restream. Restream’s encoder guide · YouTube’s encoder guide

Common problems and fixes

  • The wrong YouTube channel connects: disconnect or revisit the channel authorization flow, then select the Google account that owns the intended channel. Restream says the owner must connect the channel.
  • YouTube is missing or will not accept a live event: check whether live streaming is enabled and whether first-time phone verification and the activation wait have been completed.
  • The intended event is absent from the Event dropdown: verify that you are editing the correct connected YouTube channel and that the event exists under that channel. Confirm the event selection in your own dashboard.
  • Custom RTMP is unavailable: Restream identifies Custom RTMP as a paid-plan feature. Use the native YouTube connection and event-selection path if it fits your setup.
  • A scheduled prerecorded stream does not appear to be starting: check the scheduled time, selected destination, and event settings in Restream. The available documentation describes automatic start, but cannot establish the settings or status of an individual account’s event.

Long streams and YouTube limits

Restream’s YouTube guide, dated July 9, 2026, reports that YouTube has no stream-duration limit but archives only streams shorter than 12 hours. It also reports a 100-character title limit, a 5,000-character description limit, and recommended bitrate ranges of 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate. These are figures reported by Restream, not guarantees for every account or event; check current YouTube guidance and the settings shown for your stream before relying on them for a long broadcast. Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than one scheduled event, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
