In WordPress, you can start with the Video block and configure its playback settings. In either case, include a poster image and keep essential content as ordinary page text: autoplay may not start, and video can begin downloading before a visitor interacts with the page.
Choose an implementation route

Both routes can work. Native code exposes the details directly; WordPress offers editor settings, but the exact background treatment depends on the theme, page builder, and available CSS controls. WordPress documents the Video block at Video block.
Add a video background with HTML and CSS
1. Prepare the video and fallback image
Choose a short clip that still works when cropped to the hero’s shape. Compress it for web delivery and remove its audio track if it is only decorative and will always play muted. Create a poster image that can represent the hero when the video has not loaded or cannot play. The video is still a media download; the poster does not make a large video file inexpensive to load.
If you have both WebM and MP4 versions, provide them as separate sources so the browser can select a supported format. The HTML video reference explains the element’s source and playback attributes: MDN: <video>.

2. Put the video and real content in the same hero

</section>Change the source paths and text to match your site. The headline, offer, and action belong in HTML text, not baked into the video: they need to remain available if playback fails, and visitors should be able to read them independently of the moving image.
3. Layer and crop the video with CSS

}object-fit: cover fills the hero but crops parts of the image when its proportions differ from the container. Check the result at mobile and desktop widths, and adjust the video framing or hero dimensions if the important subject is cut off. The 60vh value is a starting point, not a required height. If text lacks contrast over some frames, add a suitably tested overlay or background behind the content.

4. Test playback and the fallback
autoplay, muted, loop, playsinline, and poster are supported video-element features. Muted playback is more likely to qualify for autoplay than playback with sound, while playsinline requests playback within the element rather than a separate fullscreen presentation. Neither attribute guarantees that a browser or user setting will permit autoplay. Test the page with autoplay unavailable as well as in the browsers and devices your audience uses. Keep the poster meaningful so the hero remains presentable if playback does not begin.
Add a background video in WordPress
- In the page editor, add a Video block where the video should appear, then choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL.
- Select the video block and configure the available settings, such as autoplay, loop, muted playback, inline playback, controls, preload, and poster image.
- Place the headline and call to action in separate text and button blocks. Check whether your theme or page builder already provides a video-background control; its layout options may be more appropriate than styling a standard Video block yourself.
- Preview the published page at different screen sizes and confirm that the poster and text remain usable when the video is not playing.
Uploading a video can slow a page, and a low preload setting is not a guarantee that an autoplaying video will wait: the HTML reference notes that autoplay takes precedence over preload hints. Keep the page fast without losing the visual effect
- Use one restrained clip. Keep it short and compressed, and avoid loading several large background videos on the same page.
- Consider when the file loads. Autoplay can cause a download to start immediately, including when a video is outside the initial viewport. For a hero visible on arrival, weigh immediate motion against page loading and Largest Contentful Paint. For below-the-fold video, consider deferring its download until it approaches the viewport.
- Retain a static fallback. The poster gives the browser an image to show while video data is unavailable; it also helps when autoplay is blocked or video is disabled.
- Use delivery suited to your site. A media library or an existing media URL can serve a basic implementation. A site with larger files or heavier traffic may need to consider video hosting or CDN delivery; the right choice depends on its delivery needs.
web.dev describes using a poster and Intersection Observer to defer downloading until a video approaches the viewport. Its guidance is to use autoplay only when necessary and anticipated: web.dev: Video performance.
Make the moving background accessible
If the clip is decorative, keep it out of the accessibility tree and ensure that it adds no information visitors need to understand the page. In the example, aria-hidden="true" marks the decorative video as hidden from assistive technology; the visible message remains real text.

If the video conveys information, do not treat it as a decorative background. Provide that information in accessible text, and give visitors an appropriate way to control playback. A looping video runs indefinitely; meaningful video also requires suitable captions and access to its content. web.dev cautions that a background video is not accessible when it conveys content without playback control and access to captions: web.dev: Video performance.
Troubleshoot common problems
