To add a thumbnail in modern WordPress, assign a Featured image from the post settings sidebar. Open the post, select the gear icon, choose Featured image, upload or select an image in the Media Library, and click Set featured image. WordPress calls this a featured image; “post thumbnail” is the older term for the same post-level assignment.

The assignment is separate from inserting an image into the article body. Whether readers see it on the homepage, blog index, archive, or individual post is controlled by your theme and its templates.

What a featured image does

A featured image is attached to the post or page as its representative image. It is not automatically the same thing as an Image block inside the content. Themes commonly use the assigned image in post cards, home-page sections, blog indexes, archives, social-style layouts, or at the top of a single post. WordPress documentation notes that “Many themes use this image to showcase the post on the home page or blog index page.” Your theme may display it differently or not display it at all.

Assigning an image and displaying an image are two separate jobs: the editor stores the assignment, while the theme or site template decides where that assignment is rendered.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Method 1: Set the featured image from the post settings

  1. Open the content. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Posts (or Pages) and open an existing item, or create a new one.
  2. Open the settings sidebar. Click the gear or settings icon in the upper-right corner if the sidebar is hidden. Make sure you are viewing post/page settings, not only the settings for the block currently selected in the editor.
  3. Find Featured image. In the post or page settings, locate the Featured image panel and click Set featured image. You can also drag an image into the displayed area when that control is available.
  4. Choose or upload an image. In the Media Library, select an existing item or use the upload control to add a file from your computer. Check that the selected image is the one you want associated with this post.
  5. Confirm the assignment. Click Set featured image in the Media Library dialog. The image should now appear in the Featured image panel.
  6. Save and inspect the result. Update or publish the post, then open its preview. Check the single-post view and an archive or homepage card if your theme uses one. The preview is the reliable way to see your theme’s crop, position, and placement.

To change the image later, reopen the same panel and use its replace option. To remove the assignment without deleting the file from your Media Library, use Remove featured image (the wording can vary slightly by editor version).

Method 2: Assign an image already in the article

If the image is already inserted in the post, you do not need to upload it again.

  1. Click the image so its Image block is selected.
  2. Open the Image block’s More options menu (the three-dot control).
  3. Choose Set as featured image.
  4. Confirm the assignment if WordPress asks you to do so.

This produces the same post-level featured-image assignment as Method 1. The difference is only your starting point: Method 1 starts in the post settings and Media Library; Method 2 starts with an image already in the content.

Why you cannot see the Featured image panel

The settings sidebar is closed

Click the gear/settings icon in the upper-right corner. Then look at the post or page settings rather than the selected block’s controls.

The content type does not support featured images

Featured-image support is not universal for every post type. A theme or custom post type must declare support for post thumbnails. If the panel is absent after opening the correct sidebar, check the theme’s documentation and the configuration of the content type. A plugin, managed host, or custom theme can also alter which controls appear.

You are editing a different editor or template

Full-site editing, custom post types, and plugins may change labels and panel placement. Confirm that you are editing the post itself, not only a template or reusable block. The exact controls can differ with WordPress version, theme, plugins, and content type.

Permissions or an editor error are interfering

If the panel normally exists but will not open or save, refresh the editor, check that your account can edit the post, and temporarily test with nonessential browser extensions disabled. If the problem persists, test whether a plugin conflict or theme customization is involved before changing production settings.

Choosing an image that survives theme crops

There is no single correct featured-image pixel size for every WordPress site. Themes can request WordPress’s Thumbnail, Medium, Large, or Full Size images, and they may register their own image sizes. A registered size can be proportionally scaled or cropped; a theme can also define a crop position. Consequently, an image that looks perfect in the editor may be trimmed in a card or banner.

  • Use a clear subject with enough space around important text, faces, or logos.
  • Prefer a source large enough for the largest placement your theme uses, while keeping the file reasonably sized.
  • Check the post preview at the actual archive and single-post layouts, not only inside the editor.
  • If your site lets you choose image sizes under Settings → Media, understand that a theme’s custom sizes may still control the displayed crop.

When a site uses the Post Featured Image block in a template, its controls can include link-to-post, alignment, aspect ratio, dimensions, border, and image style. Those controls affect rendering in that template; they do not replace the act of assigning a featured image to the post.

Featured image versus an image in the post

Action What it changes Where it commonly appears
Insert an Image block Adds an image at a specific position in the article content Inside the post body wherever the block is placed
Set featured image Associates one image with the post or page Theme-controlled cards, indexes, archives, headers, or templates
Use a Post Featured Image block in a template Renders the assigned image in that template Where the site template places the block

You can use the same media file for both purposes, but changing an Image block does not necessarily change the post’s featured-image assignment unless you explicitly use Set as featured image.

Changing, replacing, or removing it

Replace it

Open the post settings sidebar, expand Featured image, choose the replace option, select another Media Library item or upload a new file, and confirm. The new file becomes the assigned image; the old media item remains in the library unless you delete it separately.

Remove it

Use Remove featured image in the same panel and update the post. Removing the assignment normally does not delete the underlying media file.

Change the visible crop

If the editor or template offers aspect-ratio, dimensions, or image-style controls, adjust those rendering settings. If the crop is controlled by a theme-registered size, the solution may require changing the source composition or the theme’s image-size configuration rather than editing the post.

When the image is assigned but not visible

  • Check the correct page. Look at the site’s homepage, blog index, archive, and single-post preview; a theme may use the image in only some of these locations.
  • Check the template. A block theme or custom template must include a Post Featured Image block (or equivalent dynamic output) for the assignment to render there.
  • Check caching. Clear any page or CDN cache only after confirming the assignment saved. A stale archive can show the previous image.
  • Check responsive layouts. Mobile and desktop templates can use different crops or omit the image at a breakpoint.
  • Check image processing. If a particular size is missing or distorted, regenerate thumbnails only with a method appropriate to your host and theme, and keep a backup before bulk changes.

Do not assume a missing image means the upload failed: the assignment may be correct while the active template chooses not to render it.

Accessibility and editorial checks

Give the media item useful alternative text when the image conveys information. If it is purely decorative, follow your site’s accessibility policy rather than repeating the headline as alt text. A featured image can be used in several contexts, so write a concise description that remains accurate outside the article body. Add a meaningful title or caption only when it helps readers; those fields are not substitutes for the featured-image assignment.

Before publishing, verify that the image is licensed for your use, the important subject is not at an edge likely to be cropped, and the preview remains legible on narrow screens.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to obtain a clean screenshot of a WordPress post for documentation, QA, or a content workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one request. It is separate from assigning a WordPress featured image: use the WordPress steps above when you need the post-level setting, and use ScreenshotNeo when you need an automated capture of the rendered page.

The API accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameter details. This cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/your-wordpress-post -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/your-wordpress-post"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/your-wordpress-post' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get an access key.

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. Open the post settings sidebar with the gear icon.
  2. Confirm you are editing a post or page that supports featured images.
  3. Assign the image through Featured image → Set featured image, or use the Image block’s More options → Set as featured image.
  4. Click Update or Publish; do not rely on an unsaved editor state.
  5. Inspect the single-post preview and the archive or homepage where the theme is expected to show it.
  6. If it is still missing, inspect the active template, responsive rules, plugin/theme conflicts, and cache.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one post have more than one featured image?

WordPress’s standard post setting assigns one featured image at a time. A site can show additional images through content blocks, custom fields, or plugins, but those are separate implementations.

Does removing a featured image delete it from the Media Library?

No. Removing the assignment normally leaves the uploaded media item available in the library; deleting the file is a separate action.

Will changing the featured image resize the original file?

The theme or WordPress image-size system may generate derivative sizes for display. The original media item remains a separate file unless you replace or delete it.
