You can try adding a third-party bulb through Hue’s Add devices flow, but a Zigbee label alone does not guarantee that it will pair. The documented setup steps cover Hue products; check the bulb’s exact model and its manufacturer’s Hue Bridge compatibility details before you buy or troubleshoot.
What you need before you start
- A Hue Bridge: These steps use the Bridge-based Hue setup path. Philips Hue says its lights communicate over Zigbee or Bluetooth depending on whether a Bridge is used; that describes Hue’s system, not universal support for other brands’ bulbs. - Model-specific compatibility information: Look for an explicit statement that the exact bulb model and generation works with a Hue Bridge. “Zigbee” on the packaging identifies a wireless protocol, not guaranteed compatibility with Hue.
- The bulb maker’s pairing instructions: Third-party reset and pairing procedures can differ. Hue does not document one universal reset procedure for non-Hue bulbs.
How to try adding the bulb in the Hue app
- Open the Hue app and start Add devices. The current UK Hue guide gives two routes: Home > three-dot menu > Add devices, or Settings > Devices > plus.
- Select the room where you want the bulb and follow the app’s discovery prompts.
- If the flow asks for a product QR code and your bulb has none, choose No QR code to search or enter a serial number, if that option is presented. Philips Hue documents this fallback in its Hue bulbs and lamps setup guide; the guide is written for Hue products and does not promise that the app will find a third-party bulb.
- If discovery does not find the bulb, consult the bulb manufacturer’s current instructions for putting that model into pairing or reset mode, then try discovery again.
Why a Zigbee bulb may not appear
Shared use of Zigbee does not by itself mean two products implement the same features or pairing behavior. Hue’s own description of Zigbee and Bluetooth explains how Hue products communicate, but it is not a compatibility list for third-party bulbs. The Hue app’s QR, search, and serial-number instructions likewise describe Hue product setup rather than a guaranteed path for every other brand.
For older bulbs, compatibility claims can also become stale as firmware changes. A Hue Developer Program post from around 2017–2018 discussed planned Zigbee 3.0 support and older IKEA TRÅDFRI software issues; that historical discussion is not enough to establish whether a particular bulb works today. Check current model-specific guidance instead.
What to check when choosing a third-party bulb
- Exact model and generation: Do not assume every bulb in a brand’s range behaves alike.
- Explicit Hue Bridge support: A claim of generic Zigbee support is weaker than a statement naming Hue Bridge compatibility.
- Supported controls: Confirm whether pairing provides only on/off, or also dimming, white-temperature adjustment, color, or scenes. Support can vary by model; feature parity with Hue is not established across third-party bulbs.
- Maintenance and recovery: Find out who provides firmware updates and the correct reset or pairing steps if the bulb stops responding.
IKEA KAJPLATS is one model family to investigate: a TechRadar report dated 19 September 2026 says KAJPLATS smart lights use Zigbee Light Link and can connect to a Hue Bridge for basic control through the Hue app. This is secondary reporting, not official Hue certification; verify the exact SKU or version and its supported functions before relying on that example. If the bulb still will not pair
- Recheck that the packaging or manufacturer’s current support page names the exact model as compatible with a Hue Bridge.
- Follow the manufacturer’s pairing or reset instructions for that model; do not assume a Hue bulb reset sequence applies.
- Repeat the Hue app’s discovery flow and use the search option when available. The no-QR-code option is a search or serial-number fallback, not proof that every third-party product is supported.
- If the bulb joins but some controls are missing, compare the functions actually exposed in Hue with the maker’s compatibility statement. The evidence does not establish that third-party bulbs uniformly support Hue scenes, color behavior, firmware updates, or integrations.
