For most WordPress stores, the simplest way to add a shipping calculator is to configure WooCommerce shipping zones and methods. Customers can then enter their delivery address in the cart to see available shipping options and charges. If you want an estimate on product pages or rates calculated by a carrier such as FedEx, you’ll need an extension and additional configuration.

Choose where and how the calculator should work

Start by deciding what shoppers need to see and how you want to calculate the charge. WooCommerce’s built-in shipping settings cover configured rates and methods in the cart and checkout flow. A product-page calculator is a separate extension use case; carrier-calculated rates also require an integration rather than being a core WooCommerce feature.

Option Where shoppers see it How rates are determined Setup and best fit
WooCommerce zones and methods Cart and checkout calculation flow Configured flat rates, free shipping, local pickup, and shipping-class rules Configure zones, their order, and methods. Best for predictable regional or product-based pricing.
Product-page calculator extension Product pages, with documented table or popup display options Uses configured shipping methods; behavior depends on the setup Install and configure the extension, then select products and placement. Best when shoppers should estimate shipping before adding an item to the cart.
Carrier-rate integration Through the configured shipping method Rates returned by the carrier integration Requires an extension plus carrier account/API credentials and shipment details. Best when rates should reflect carrier pricing and package information.

WooCommerce’s shipping documentation describes the available built-in methods and how zones determine which options apply. See Setting up Shipping Zones and Shipping Documentation.

Set up a shipping calculator with WooCommerce core

1. Confirm your shipping locations

Before creating zones, check your store’s shipping location configuration in WooCommerce. The locations you serve determine which regions you need to cover with zones. WooCommerce’s current settings and labels can vary by installed version, so confirm them in your own admin area.

#1 Best Overall
Accuteck 8250 High Accuracy Digital Shipping Scale and Postal Scale, 0.1oz Precision, 50Lb
  • Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
  • Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
  • Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
  • Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
  • Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz

2. Create zones for the areas you serve

  1. In WordPress Admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Shipping zones.
  2. Add a zone with a descriptive name, such as “Local delivery” or “Domestic.”
  3. Select the regions for that zone. If appropriate, narrow it further by postcode.
  4. Save the zone, then add the shipping method or methods customers in that zone should see.

Zones let you configure shipping options for defined customer locations. Each customer’s shipping address matches only one applicable zone, so zone order affects the result. WooCommerce documents these controls in Setting up Shipping Zones.

3. Put specific zones before broad ones

Order zones from narrow to broad: place a city- or postcode-specific zone before a state, country, or international zone that also covers that address. WooCommerce checks zones in list order and uses the first match. If a broad zone comes first, it can match the customer before the more specific zone does. The current documentation refers to an inline zone-order warning starting in WooCommerce 11.1; check the interface for your installed version.

4. Add a method and configure its price

WooCommerce includes three built-in shipping methods: Flat Rate, Free Shipping, and Local Pickup. Add the appropriate method within each zone. For Flat Rate, configure its customer-facing name, tax status, and cost. The Flat Rate Shipping documentation explains how to set charges per order, per item, or by shipping class.

Amazon Basics Digital Shipping Postal Scale with Tare Function, Heavy Duty Weighing Platform, 660 lb Capacity, 1 Ounce Readability, Portable, Black
  • Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
  • Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
  • 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
  • Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
  • Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m

Shipping classes can help distinguish groups such as bulky and small products. If an order contains products from multiple classes, WooCommerce supports per-class or per-order calculations. Choose the calculation that fits your pricing policy rather than assuming every item should be charged independently.

5. Test addresses and cart results

Use representative addresses to check that each zone returns the expected method:

  • A postcode inside your local zone
  • A domestic address outside that local zone
  • An address in each international zone you serve

In the cart, use the customer’s Calculate Shipping flow to enter an address and check the available methods. The way this appears can vary by theme. Also check that each zone has at least one method: WooCommerce informs customers when their address matches a zone with no available shipping methods.

Add a calculator to product pages

If customers need a shipping estimate before adding an item to the cart, WooCommerce’s documented product-page calculator extension can show a calculator on product pages. Its settings allow you to choose which product types, categories, tags, or brands display it, and its documented options include an in-page table or popup and placement around the add-to-cart button or description.

  1. Download the extension ZIP.
  2. In WordPress Admin, go to Plugins > Add New, upload the ZIP, then install and activate the extension.
  3. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping Calculator.
  4. Select the product types, categories, tags, or brands where the calculator should appear.
  5. Choose the display style and placement, then check the result on the relevant product pages.

For current installation and configuration details, use WooCommerce’s Shipping Calculator on Product Page documentation. The extension’s presence on a product page does not, by itself, mean the displayed charge is a live carrier quote; the rate behavior depends on the shipping methods and integrations configured for the store.

Configure carrier-calculated rates when needed

Use a carrier integration when the estimate needs to come from a carrier rather than from a price you set in WooCommerce. For example, WooCommerce’s FedEx setup guide requires the extension, a shipping zone with FedEx added as a method, origin and packing details, and FedEx API credentials. It describes obtaining dynamic rates from the FedEx API.

Before publishing carrier rates, confirm that the required carrier account and API access are available for your store’s geography and the services you intend to offer. Package dimensions and packing choices matter when an extension calculates packages: WooCommerce’s shipping overview notes that box packers use product dimensions to determine which items fit. Review product dimensions and package settings if the returned rates seem wrong.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected shipping options

  • The wrong zone’s method appears: Reorder zones so the most specific applicable region precedes broader regions.
  • No shipping is available: Check whether the address matches a zone that has no method configured.
  • A rate is unexpected: Review the method’s cost and shipping-class rules. For extension-based package rates, check product dimensions and packing settings. WooCommerce’s shipping overview recommends enabling the relevant shipping plugin’s debug mode and adding a product to the cart to inspect useful information.
  • A carrier rate is missing: Check the integration’s carrier credentials, origin, package details, zone, and supported services for your location.

For developers building a custom WooCommerce shipping method rather than configuring an existing one, consult the Shipping method API documentation.
