Install a screenshot extension in Chrome
- Use a normal Chrome window. Open Chrome on your computer, not an Incognito or guest window. Chrome does not allow extensions to be added from those modes.
- Open the Chrome Web Store. Use Chrome’s Web Store and search for terms such as screenshot, full-page screenshot, or screen capture.
- Match the listing to your task. Check whether the extension supports a visible-area capture, selected-area capture, full-page capture, annotation, or the output format you need. Those capabilities differ by publisher and can change, so confirm them on the current listing.
- Select Add to Chrome. Chrome displays the extension’s requested permissions before installation.
- Review the warning. Select Add extension only when the publisher is trustworthy and the requested access makes sense. Cancel if the extension asks for broader access than your screenshot job requires.
- Open the installed tool. Select Chrome’s Extensions icon (the puzzle-piece icon) to the right of the address bar, then select the screenshot extension. Use its own capture and save controls; button names, file formats, and save locations vary.
Choose an extension safely
Understand site access
An extension can request permission to read or change data on every website, or only on specified websites. Depending on its design, it may also request access to browsing history, tabs and browsing activity, physical location, bookmarks, or data copied and pasted. Optional permissions can appear after installation rather than during the first prompt.
For a screenshot utility, broad “all websites” access may be necessary for full-page capture on arbitrary sites, but it also gives the extension the ability to read or modify page content. Treat that access as a security decision, not as a routine click-through.
Limit access after installation
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu.
- Find the screenshot extension and open its More menu.
- Choose This can read and change site data.
- Select the narrowest option that works: access on the current site, access on specific sites, or access on all sites.
You can revisit this setting when your work changes. A tool that only needs to capture one project site does not need permanent access to every page you visit.

Check the publisher and listing
- Confirm that the publisher name, description, support information, and requested permissions agree with one another.
- Look for a capture scope that matches your use: viewport, selected region, or complete page.
- Check whether annotation, editing, format, and destination options are included before relying on the extension for a workflow.
- Do not approve an extension you cannot explain or trust. Google’s guidance is direct: “Make sure that you only approve extensions that you trust.”
Pin, disable, repair, or remove the extension
Pin it for quick access
Open the Extensions menu and use the pin control beside the installed extension. Its icon then remains beside the address bar, so you do not need to open the puzzle-piece menu for every capture.
Turn it off temporarily
Open Chrome’s extensions management page, locate the screenshot extension, and switch it off. This is useful when diagnosing a page that behaves differently with extensions enabled or when you want to prevent capture access temporarily.
Repair a corrupted installation
If Chrome reports that an extension is corrupted, open the extensions management page and use its repair option when offered. If repair does not resolve the problem, remove the extension and install a current alternative from the Web Store.
Allow or disallow Incognito use
Chrome’s extension details include an option to allow the extension in Incognito. Enabling it is a separate decision from installing the extension. Keep it disabled unless you specifically need captures in private windows and trust the extension with those pages.

Remove it completely
From the extensions management page, choose the extension’s remove control and confirm. Removing it revokes its extension access; it does not delete screenshots you already saved elsewhere.
What to compare before installing

Take a full-page screenshot without an extension
For an occasional full-page capture, Chrome’s DevTools provides an extension-free route. Google Chrome Community guidance describes this sequence; the command-menu appearance can vary between Chrome versions.
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Open DevTools (for example, from Chrome’s menu under More tools → Developer tools).
- Open the DevTools command menu.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot.
Chrome saves the resulting image using its normal download behavior. This method is useful when you do not want to grant an extension ongoing website access, but it is less convenient for repeated captures and does not provide the extension’s publisher-specific editing controls.
When installation is blocked
Incognito or guest window
“You can’t add extensions when you browse in Incognito mode or as a guest.” Close that window and repeat the installation from a regular Chrome profile. After installation, you can separately decide whether to allow the extension in Incognito.

Work or school device
An organization can manage Chrome and block extension installation. If Add to Chrome is unavailable, a policy message appears, or the extension is automatically removed, contact your administrator. Do not attempt to bypass a managed-browser policy.
The permission request is too broad
Choose Cancel and look for another listing, or install only after confirming why the access is needed. If you already installed it, narrow site access from the extension details page before trying the capture again.
The extension cannot capture a particular page
- Confirm that the extension is enabled and has site access for the current page.
- Reload the page after changing access; some extensions need a fresh page load.
- Test on an ordinary public page to distinguish an extension problem from a restricted or application-specific page.
- Check whether the page is a browser-internal URL, a protected enterprise application, or a page controlled by a policy that blocks content scripts.
- Use DevTools’ full-size capture for a one-off page when an extension cannot operate there.
The extension is slow, broken, or obsolete
Open the extensions management page, turn it off and on, then try Chrome’s repair action if available. If the behavior continues, remove it and select a maintained alternative. Keep a copy of important captures before uninstalling.

- Install from the official Chrome Web Store listing, not an unknown download.
- Read permissions before approving and narrow site access afterward.
- Avoid capturing passwords, payment details, private messages, or customer records unless your organization permits it.
- Test the extension on a harmless page before using it in a production workflow.
- For repeatable automation, record the target URL, viewport, wait condition, output type, and access credentials separately from the image.
- Keep a fallback: DevTools for an occasional full-page image, or an API for unattended batches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a Chrome screenshot extension on Android or iPhone?
The procedure described here is for Chrome on a desktop computer. Chrome’s desktop Web Store flow and extension controls do not establish equivalent support in mobile Chrome.
Why does Chrome ask for permission to read and change website data?
A capture extension may need page access to inspect, scroll, or render content. That permission can also allow reading or modifying page data, so select the narrowest site-access option that still performs the capture.

Will uninstalling an extension delete screenshots I already saved?
No. Removing the extension revokes its installation and access; files already saved to your download folder or another destination remain there.
What is the safest choice for a single full-page capture?
Use DevTools’ command menu and choose Capture full size screenshot, avoiding a permanent extension installation when you only need one image.
