Use a real, reachable image URL and choose a representative frame that remains legible at the player’s displayed size.
What the poster attribute does
The HTML Standard defines poster as the URL of an image the user agent may show while no video data is available. It is intended to be a representative frame that tells viewers what the video contains. Without it, a player can appear blank until the first video frame is available. See the HTML Standard media specification.
The poster is a visual preview, not a separate playback layer. It normally disappears once playback starts. Native controls are independent: controls adds play, pause, seek and volume controls, but does not create a poster.

Basic implementation
Use an image beside your video file
This is the smallest complete example:
<video controls width="640" height="360" src="video.mp4" poster="preview.jpg">
Sorry, your browser does not support embedded video.
<a href="video.mp4">Download the video</a>.
</video>
If the page is in a different directory, adjust the relative path, for example images/preview.jpg or /media/preview.jpg. An absolute HTTPS URL also works when the image server permits the request. The URL must not be empty, and the resource must return an actual image; if it cannot be fetched, the browser has no poster frame to display.
Use multiple video formats with a poster
When you provide more than one source, put poster on <video>, not on an individual <source>:
<video controls poster="preview.jpg" width="640" height="360">
<source src="video.webm" type="video/webm">
<source src="video.mp4" type="video/mp4">
Your browser cannot play this video.
<a href="video.mp4">Download the MP4 file</a>.
</video>
Keep fallback content inside the element
Text and the download link between the opening and closing video tags are shown by browsers that do not support HTML video. This fallback is separate from accessibility support and should not be treated as a replacement for captions or a transcript.
Choosing and preparing the preview image
- Select a frame that accurately represents the subject or action rather than a blank transition.
- Keep faces, labels and other important details large enough to read at the rendered player size.
- Match the image’s aspect ratio to the video to avoid distracting empty space or cropping.
- Serve a web-appropriate image format and dimensions; an unnecessarily large poster increases transfer time before the viewer presses play.
- Verify the URL directly in a browser and check the page over HTTPS to avoid mixed-content blocking.
The standard’s “representative frame” requirement is a useful editorial test: a viewer should understand the video’s purpose from the image alone.
Control when the browser fetches media
Use preload as a hint about video-data fetching. Browsers retain control and may choose a different strategy.

| Setting | What it requests | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
preload="none" |
Do not preload video data. | Many videos, limited bandwidth, or a page where playback is optional. |
preload="metadata" |
Fetch metadata such as duration and dimensions. | You need duration or sizing information before playback. |
preload="auto" |
Allow the browser to download the whole file. | Immediate playback is likely and bandwidth use is acceptable. |
For a page containing several videos, lazy loading can defer video data and the poster until the element is near the viewport:
<video controls preload="none" poster="poster.jpg" loading="lazy">
<source src="video.webm" type="video/webm">
<source src="video.mp4" type="video/mp4">
</video>
loading="lazy" and preload are advisory. Test on the browsers and network conditions your audience uses; neither guarantees an exact request time.
Autoplay and why the poster may seem missing
If autoplay starts playback immediately, the poster may be visible only briefly—or not perceptibly at all. Remove autoplay when the preview is meant to invite a deliberate click. If autoplay is required, expect the first decoded frame to replace the poster quickly and follow the browser’s autoplay rules, which commonly require muted playback.
Accessibility: a poster is not a caption
A poster communicates visually but does not provide the spoken information, dialogue or important sounds in the video. Add captions with a WebVTT track when appropriate:
<video controls poster="preview.jpg" width="640" height="360">
<source src="video.mp4" type="video/mp4">
<track kind="captions" src="captions-en.vtt" srclang="en" label="English">
Your browser cannot play this video.
<a href="video.mp4">Download the video</a>.
</video>
Also provide a nearby text description of the video’s purpose and a transcript when the content warrants it. The fallback markup inside <video> is for unsupported browsers; the HTML Standard explicitly does not present it as an accessibility solution.

Debug a black or blank video preview
The image URL is wrong
Open the poster URL directly, inspect the page’s Network panel, and correct relative paths, filename case and URL encoding. Confirm the server returns an image status rather than an HTML error page.
The server blocks the request
Check HTTPS, redirects, authentication and hotlink rules. A poster hosted on a private URL cannot be displayed to anonymous visitors. Mixed-content blocking can prevent an HTTP poster on an HTTPS page.
The image is hidden by layout or CSS
Inspect the video’s computed width and height, surrounding overflow rules and overlays. A zero-sized element, an opaque overlay or a script that replaces the video can make a valid poster appear absent.
Autoplay replaced it
Temporarily remove autoplay and test again. If the poster then appears, the implementation is working and playback simply begins immediately.
The video itself has not loaded
Poster display does not repair an invalid video source. Confirm the media URL, MIME type, codec support and server range-request behavior. Keep the fallback download link so a visitor still has an alternate path.

Generate a clean preview without setting up a browser
You can create the image yourself from a video frame, but a web-page screenshot service is useful when the “preview” is a page state, such as a video embedded in a lesson or product page. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, while bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The service supports full-page and CSS-selector captures, device and viewport settings, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture (up to 100 URLs per call), a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
To capture a page that contains your video, use the API documented at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture, then use the resulting image URL or file as the video’s poster after checking its crop and readability. ScreenshotNeo has a Free plan with 1,000 shots per month and no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free plan.

FAQ
Can I use a GIF instead of a poster?
The poster value is an image URL, but a static, optimized preview is generally more predictable and smaller than an animated asset. Use a representative still unless motion is essential.

Does the poster control the video’s thumbnail in search or social media?
No. The poster controls the in-page video element. Search engines and social platforms use their own metadata and crawling rules.
Can JavaScript change the preview?
Yes. Set the element’s poster property to another valid URL, but ensure the replacement remains available and does not remove the fallback or accessibility features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a relative poster URL?
Yes. It resolves relative to the document URL, so verify the resulting path and filename case on the deployed site.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does my poster disappear before I click?
Usually the video is autoplaying or has already decoded a frame. Remove autoplay when the preview must remain visible.
Will preload always prevent a video download?
No. preload is a browser hint; user agents may fetch more or less data based on policy, connection and implementation.
The Bottom Line
For an HTML video preview, use a valid representative image in poster="preview.jpg", control fetch hints with preload and loading, and provide captions plus fallback content separately.
