There is no universal stream-key location or encoding profile: the destination determines those details. The command below is a template, not a ready-to-run recipe for an unnamed service.
Before you build the command
Confirm the destination and inspect the media files before starting. From the platform’s current official streaming instructions, obtain its ingest address and stream-key format, required protocol, accepted codecs, and encoding recommendations. FFmpeg supports output URLs and protocols including RTMP variants, but its documentation does not define one universal key arrangement or profile for every service. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and follow the chosen platform’s own current instructions.
Check the FFmpeg build installed on the VPS as well. Available protocols and codecs can depend on the build and Ubuntu package version. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and advises users of older revisions to consult documentation matching the locally installed version. The Ubuntu Noble FFmpeg protocol manpage is specific to that Ubuntu release, not a guarantee about every VPS image.
Create the playlist file
Make a plain-text file such as /home/ubuntu/playlist.ffconcat. The concat demuxer recognizes the header ffconcat version 1.0 followed by file entries. Use paths that exist and are readable by the account that runs FFmpeg:

file '/home/ubuntu/videos/clip-02.mp4'The format and quoting examples are documented in the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. Check every path, including capitalization, and quote filenames that contain spaces.
Understand the safe-path setting
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths or directives. Absolute paths may require -safe 0 in the command shown below. Disabling safe mode permits any filename, so use it only with a playlist you created and trust; do not feed it an untrusted playlist.
Check whether files can be joined as-is
Do not assume that any collection of media files will concatenate cleanly. Inspect the inputs’ video and audio streams, codecs, and parameters. FFmpeg documents automatic conversion behavior for H.264 in MP4, but differing stream layouts, codecs, or parameters can still require normalization or transcoding. Streamcopy is suitable only when the inputs and destination output are compatible.

Assemble the FFmpeg command
Use this as a structural template and replace the bracketed portions with choices supported by your installed build and the destination’s instructions:

[stream selection and encoding options required by the destination]
-f flv '[DESTINATION_INGEST_URL_WITH_KEY_AS_DOCUMENTED]'This is schematic: [stream selection and encoding options required by the destination] and [DESTINATION_INGEST_URL_WITH_KEY_AS_DOCUMENTED] are explanatory placeholders, not literal command arguments. Replace them; do not paste the brackets into a live command. The example’s -f flv is appropriate only if the chosen output protocol and destination require that muxer. Do not infer an ingest address, key placement, codec, resolution, or bitrate from this generic template.
Option order matters in FFmpeg: options generally apply to the next input or output. Here, -f concat, -safe 0, and -i describe the playlist input; output options belong after that input and before the output URL. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option behavior, stream selection, and codec handling.

Choose streamcopy or encoding
- Streamcopy: If the files have compatible streams and the destination accepts them, use explicit mapping where needed and
-c copyto pass packets through without decoding or encoding. This avoids re-encoding, but it cannot apply filters and may fail if the output container needs information the source does not provide. - Encode: If the inputs differ or need filtering, resizing, or codec conversion, select encoding settings that meet the destination’s current requirements. The correct codec and bitrate depend on that destination; no universal values are established here.
FFmpeg can select streams automatically, but automatic selection may not choose the audio or video stream you intend. Use -map to select streams explicitly when inspection shows it is necessary.
Put the stream key in the documented output format
A stream key is a credential. Use the exact URL-and-key arrangement the selected platform documents, and keep the secret out of screenshots and shared command examples. Avoid leaving it in shell history where practical; if it is exposed, rotate it using the platform’s available controls. The appropriate key-management interface and URL format are platform-specific, so this guide does not prescribe one.
Start, monitor, and troubleshoot
Run the command in the VPS session or process manager you intend to use, then watch FFmpeg’s startup output for detected streams and errors. A command that starts locally is not proof that the destination accepts the stream; check the platform’s own stream-health diagnostics as well.

Common problems and fixes
- Playlist file or media not found: Check each path, spelling, case, quoting, permissions, and the user running FFmpeg.
- Unsafe file name or path rejected: Keep the default safe-path checks where possible. If absolute paths require
-safe 0, use it only with a playlist you trust. - No video, wrong audio, or unexpected stream selected: Review FFmpeg’s detected-stream output and add explicit
-mapselections for the intended streams. - Concat or output fails with mismatched streams: Compare the inputs’ stream layouts and parameters. Use compatible inputs for streamcopy or encode them into a consistent, destination-compatible format.
- Protocol, codec, or muxer unavailable: Confirm the installed FFmpeg build includes what the command requests and that the output format matches the platform’s instructions.
- Destination does not receive a healthy stream: Recheck the current ingest URL, key arrangement, protocol, codecs, and encoding recommendations against the platform’s official guidance. Do not assume the generic example supplies these settings.
FFmpeg’s official protocol documentation includes examples for protocol-specific outputs, and the Ubuntu Noble manual includes a real-time RTSP example. Those illustrate FFmpeg’s general input-to-output pattern; they are not stream-key recipes for an unspecified RTMP service.

A VPS-based setup requires a server that can keep the FFmpeg process running and enough capacity for the chosen media and encoding workload.
