To show a title that changes while prerecorded video plays on YouTube Live, build the stream in OBS Studio: play a video or playlist, place an OBS Text Source above it, and set that text source to read a file. A separate tool, script, or manual process must update the file whenever the playing title changes; OBS’s documented file-reading option does not automatically extract the current item’s title from every playlist.
Choose a workflow that fits the title behavior you need
| Need | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A title or graphic that changes during playback | OBS scene with a video source and a file-driven Text Source | You need a reliable process to update the text file. |
| Playlist playback from local media | OBS VLC Video source | VLC must be installed, and playlist playback alone does not guarantee automatic title display. |
| Automatically scheduled prerecorded broadcast without live overlay control | StreamYard prerecorded streaming | Its automated mode does not let you control overlays or media assets during playback; embed the title into the video beforehand if needed. |
| Dedicated hardware playback and graphics | AJA HELO Plus | This is an optional hardware route; YouTube lists it for scheduled prerecorded playback and built-in graphics. |
For a changing now-playing title, OBS is the practical flexible route. StreamYard may suit a hands-off scheduled broadcast if the title is already part of the video, while AJA HELO Plus is specialized hardware rather than a requirement.
Set up the prerecorded YouTube stream in OBS
1. Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room.
- In the encoder settings, connect OBS using YouTube’s service integration, or copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides into OBS’s stream settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Follow YouTube’s go-live workflow in Live Control Room after OBS begins sending the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
2. Add the video or playlist
- Create an OBS scene for the broadcast.
- For one local video, add a Media Source and select the file. OBS supports common video formats.
- For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and configure the playlist. OBS’s VLC source supports looping and shuffle.
- Install VLC if the VLC Video source is unavailable. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
3. Add the title overlay
- Add an OBS Text Source to the scene.
- Move the Text Source above the video source in the source list so the title appears over the picture.
- Enable Read from file and select a text file containing the title to display.
- Position and style the text in the scene, then check the preview for legibility against the video.
With “Read from file” enabled, OBS reads the displayed text from a file instead of a fixed text field. Changing what the file contains is what changes the overlay.

Make the title update when the video changes
The text file needs its own update mechanism. That could be a helper tool, a script, or a manual edit; which approach works depends on your operating system, media source, and player. OBS’s documented features establish file-based text display, but they do not promise that a VLC playlist automatically writes its current filename or title to the file.
- Test the updater with the exact OBS scene, playlist, and operating system you plan to use.
- Check that a title change in the file appears in the OBS preview before going live.
- Test playlist transitions, looping, shuffled playback if enabled, and any unusual filename characters or blank metadata.
- If reliable automatic title changes are essential and you cannot verify an updater, use a workflow you can control or embed titles in the video files before streaming.
Go live and verify the result
- Start streaming from OBS.
- Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the incoming preview appears.
- Check that the title overlay is visible and updates at the expected transitions.
- Complete YouTube’s go-live steps, then monitor the broadcast and the title file or updater.
Use scheduled prerecorded streaming when overlays do not need live control
StreamYard supports scheduled prerecorded streams to YouTube. Its help documentation says its automatic prerecorded mode does not allow overlays or other media assets to be controlled during playback. If each segment needs a different now-playing title in that workflow, add the title to the video before scheduling rather than relying on a live overlay control.
