Use FFmpeg’s overlay video filter: make the video the main input, add a transparent logo image as a second input, and position it with expressions based on the video’s dimensions. The overlay works whether “playlist” means source videos played in sequence or an HLS playlist of output segments—but those are separate parts of the workflow.

What “playlist stream” means

A source-video playlist is a sequence of recordings you want to play one after another. An HLS media playlist is a list of short segments created for delivery to YouTube. The logo overlay belongs in the video-processing stage: it is composited onto the video frames before they are encoded and sent. If you choose HLS, its output playlist serves a different purpose: it orders the resulting segments.

Add the logo with FFmpeg’s overlay filter

Pass the video first and the logo second. This official FFmpeg example places a transparent logo 10 pixels from the left edge and 10 pixels above the bottom edge:

ffmpeg -i input -i logo -filter_complex 'overlay=10:main_h-overlay_h-10' output

For a lower-right position with a 10-pixel inset from both edges, use:

overlay=main_w-overlay_w-10:main_h-overlay_h-10

main_w and main_h refer to the main video’s width and height; overlay_w and overlay_h refer to the logo’s dimensions. Because the expressions use the main frame dimensions, they adapt to different video sizes. FFmpeg’s filter guide shows a transparent PNG as the logo input. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation for the filter syntax and examples.

Use the output of a more complex filter graph

If your filter graph has multiple inputs or outputs, label the composited stream and map it explicitly. FFmpeg’s general pattern is [0:v][1:v]overlay[out], followed by -map '[out]'. Keep the overlay attached to the video stream that will be encoded; mapping another video stream can leave the logo off the actual output.

Choose size and placement for the frame

Corner and margin choices are design decisions, not YouTube requirements. Check the logo against the actual frame dimensions and keep it from covering important text or action. A large logo can obscure content; a small edge inset can make it easier to see without dominating the image. The filter examples above position the logo but do not prescribe its scale.

Sequence source videos separately from logo composition

If you mean a list of source videos played in sequence, decide how those videos are selected and sequenced independently of the overlay filter. The filter composites the logo over the frames it receives; it does not, by itself, create a source-video playlist or guarantee seamless transitions between different files. Once the sequence is producing the video stream to encode, apply the logo stage to that stream.

For multiple outputs or a more involved graph, use explicit labels and map the intended composited video stream. Verify that the audio stream is also selected and encoded as required for the output protocol. The cited FFmpeg filter example establishes the overlay syntax, not one complete command for every source-list format, audio arrangement, FFmpeg build, and YouTube ingestion protocol.

Choose YouTube’s ingestion protocol separately

Adding -f hls is not enough to make arbitrary FFmpeg output acceptable to YouTube. Select the protocol in YouTube Live Control Room and configure the encoder and muxer for that protocol’s requirements. For HLS, YouTube’s creator-facing setup instructions require the HLS protocol and HTTPS ingestion URL. They specify TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no byte-range mode. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends segments. See YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

HLS media requirements and transport

Google’s encoder-facing HLS guide describes muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio with a single audio track, closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. It describes sending media playlists and segments to the endpoint with HTTP PUT or POST. YouTube Help’s creator-facing page lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio support. These are descriptions from different YouTube documents and contexts; use the creator setup page for account-side setup and the encoder guide for transport details rather than treating the wording as interchangeable. See Google’s HLS ingestion guide.

Google describes HLS as “a good choice for premium content that requires high quality and high resolution at a relatively higher latency.” This is a protocol trade-off, not a promise that HLS automatically improves an encode. YouTube Help identifies higher latency than continuous RTMP and positions HLS for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. Compare the protocol requirements, configuration, and latency for your stream before choosing.

FFmpeg’s HLS muxer is only one part of compliance

FFmpeg documents options for creating HLS playlists and segments, but muxer settings alone do not establish that an output meets YouTube’s ingestion requirements. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for muxer behavior, then check the current YouTube instructions for your chosen protocol. The official references do not provide one complete, tested command covering every source-video playlist syntax, audio setup, FFmpeg build, codec, and YouTube output protocol.

Troubleshoot the overlay and ingest workflow

  • The logo does not appear: Confirm it is the second input to the filter graph and that the output maps the composited video stream. With a multi-output graph, label the overlay result and map that label.
  • The logo is in the wrong corner: Check the x and y expressions. For lower-right placement, use main_w-overlay_w-10:main_h-overlay_h-10; the final 10 in each expression is the edge inset in pixels.
  • The logo is clipped or obscures content: Reconsider the logo’s dimensions and its position relative to the main frame. The documented position expression does not resize the image or decide whether a placement is visually appropriate.
  • YouTube rejects the HLS feed: Check the selected HLS protocol and HTTPS endpoint, segment duration, rolling playlist, HTTP method, byte-range setting, container, codecs, audio-track count, GOP, and frame rate against the current YouTube documentation. A valid FFmpeg HLS output is not automatically a valid YouTube HLS feed.
  • The stream has more delay than expected: HLS sends video in segments and YouTube describes it as higher latency than continuous RTMP. Revisit the protocol choice if lower latency is important and your content and encoder are compatible with RTMP.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos playing around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg command-line workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
