To add a working free shipping bar, configure WooCommerce’s native Free shipping method first, then add a progress-bar extension that reports the same threshold. The bar only communicates progress; it does not grant shipping by itself.
1. Configure the actual free-shipping offer
Start with the shipping rule that determines eligibility. In WordPress, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Shipping zones, open the zone that should offer free shipping, and add the Free shipping method.
- Enter the shopper-facing method name, such as “Free shipping.”
- Choose the requirement that matches your offer.
- Save the method and confirm the zone is assigned to the regions you intend to serve.

WooCommerce documents these three eligibility choices in its Free Shipping Documentation. A progress bar cannot override this rule, so do not install or configure the display before the method is correct.
2. Add and configure a shipping progress bar
For a single free-shipping goal, WooCommerce’s Shipping Progress Bar extension is designed to display the amount still needed. Open WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping Progress Bar after installing and activating the extension.

Set the target and messages
- Enable the progress bar.
- Set the free-shipping threshold to match the applicable Free shipping method.
- Write the incomplete message, for example: Add {amount} more for free shipping!
- Set the reached message shown when the cart qualifies.
- Choose the currency and formatting options exposed by the extension, if available.
Use the extension’s zone-aware option when different shipping zones have different thresholds. Its documentation describes detecting the customer’s shipping zone and selecting the applicable target.
Place the bar with settings or a shortcode
Choose the pages and positions that fit your storefront, such as product pages, the cart, checkout, or a site-wide location. Where the extension supports manual placement, insert [shipping_progress_bar] in the relevant content, widget, or builder field. The exact result depends on whether your theme and page builder render that location.
3. Make the calculation match your shipping rules
Different thresholds by shipping zone
A customer’s destination can change the required spend. Test an address in every zone with a distinct threshold and verify that the bar shows that zone’s amount, not a global default.
Coupons and discounts
If free shipping requires a coupon, enable and test the extension’s coupon-calculation behavior. Check the message before the coupon is applied, immediately after it is applied, and after the coupon is removed. Confirm that the bar’s “amount remaining” follows the same subtotal rules your shipping method uses.

Taxes, products, and exclusions
Use a test cart containing the product types, tax display mode, and discounts used by real customers. If your store excludes certain items or shipping classes, verify that the progress message does not promise eligibility that the shipping method will reject.
4. Choose a useful storefront placement

Preview the bar on desktop and mobile using your production theme. Responsive behavior, spacing, and AJAX cart updates can differ from the extension’s demonstration pages.
5. Alternatives when one free-shipping goal is not enough
Cart Goals
Cart Goals can combine free shipping with other rewards in one bar. Its documentation says the free-shipping target is read from the shipping zone’s configured Free Shipping method. It displays progress; it does not add products to the cart or apply a discount.

The WordPress.org listing describes a plugin that depends on WooCommerce’s Free Shipping method and supports classic and block cart/checkout pages. Check its current WordPress and WooCommerce compatibility information before activation.

6. Test the complete customer journey
- Open the storefront in a private browser window.
- Set a destination in each shipping zone you serve.
- Add an item below the threshold and confirm the bar shows the correct remaining amount.
- Increase quantity or add another item; confirm the bar updates without a stale value.
- Reach the threshold and verify that WooCommerce offers the Free shipping method in the cart or checkout.
- Remove an item and confirm both the shipping method and bar revert correctly.
- Apply and remove any free-shipping coupon used by the offer.
- Repeat the checks on a phone and with your actual cart and checkout layouts.
Common problems and fixes
The bar appears, but shipping is still charged
Check the shipping zone, destination, method status, and minimum amount. A visual bar does not create or enable WooCommerce’s Free shipping method.
The bar shows the wrong threshold
Compare the extension target with each zone’s Free shipping setting. Enable zone detection where supported, then test from an address in the affected zone.
The amount does not change after a coupon
Review the extension’s coupon-calculation setting and test with the exact coupon configuration used in production.

The shortcode is visible as text
Place [shipping_progress_bar] in a WordPress area that processes shortcodes, or use the extension’s supported widget, block, or placement setting. A builder text field may display shortcodes literally.
The bar breaks the cart or checkout layout
Disable the problematic placement, test the cart and checkout independently, and check the mobile layout. Block and classic cart/checkout templates may require different supported placements.

- Set up and test the native Free shipping method before configuring the bar.
- Keep every bar threshold synchronized with the relevant shipping zone and coupon rules.
- Treat the bar as an indicator, not as the mechanism that grants free shipping.
