Add your webcam to an OBS scene as a Video Capture Source, then add the frame as an Image source above it. Use a transparent PNG for a static frame so the webcam remains visible through the opening; position and resize the sources in the preview or with Edit Transform.
Choose a frame that fits your camera layout
The right method depends on the appearance you want and the shape of the camera opening:
- Static decorative frame: Use a PNG with a transparent area where the webcam should show through. Elgato recommends PNG for static transparent overlays: Elgato overlay guidance.
- Animated frame: Use a transparency-capable animated overlay; Elgato recommends WEBM for animated overlays that need transparency. Confirm the file works in your installed OBS version before building your scene around it.
- Round or irregular opening: A rectangular overlay alone will not clip the webcam into a circle or other shape. Use a matching mask asset or an image mask filter, and check the exact filter label in your OBS build; the available reference does not establish a current filter label for every version.
- Plain solid-color border: OBS includes a Color Source. It can be part of a layered border treatment, but the exact construction depends on the layout; a transparent image overlay is the more direct option when you already have frame artwork.
Add the webcam and frame in OBS
- Open the intended scene. In OBS Studio, select an existing scene or create one for the layout where the webcam should appear.
- Add the camera. In the Sources dock, select + → Video Capture Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the webcam device. OBS uses Video Capture Source for webcams; see the OBS Project’s Sources Guide and OBS FAQ.
- Add the frame artwork. Select Sources → + → Image, create or select the source, and browse to the image file. OBS’s Sources Guide describes Image as a source type for adding an image to a scene.
- Put the frame above the webcam. In the Sources list, drag the frame source above the Video Capture Source. Sources higher in the list render in front. As the OBS Project’s Sources Guide puts it: “A Source that is listed above another Source in the list will be on top and might hide what’s beneath it.” A transparent center lets the camera show through while the artwork remains visible around it.
- Place and size the sources. Select a source in the preview and drag its bounding box to position or resize it. Align the webcam within the transparent opening. For precise values, select the source and use Edit → Transform → Edit Transform.
- Check the whole scene. Verify that the webcam fills the intended opening, the frame is not covering the camera image, and neither source is cropped unintentionally. If the opening is non-rectangular, apply a suitable mask to the webcam source and confirm the result in the preview.
Adjust position, size, or crop precisely
Use the preview for quick placement, then open Edit Transform when you need more controlled positioning or sizing. OBS also supports cropping by dragging an edge of the selected source while holding Alt on Windows or Linux, or Option on macOS. Cropping changes how much of that source is visible; it does not make a rectangular webcam image take on a round shape. For that, use a mask.
Troubleshoot a frame that does not look right
- The frame hides the webcam: The frame source may be below the camera, or its center may not actually be transparent. Move the frame above the webcam and inspect the image file’s transparency.
- The webcam covers the frame: Check the Sources order. The frame needs to be listed above the Video Capture Source for its border to render in front.
- The camera does not fit the opening: Reposition or resize the webcam source in the preview or Edit Transform. If the opening is an unusual shape, use a matching mask rather than relying on cropping alone.
- The frame edges or opening are cut off: Select the affected source and inspect its position, size, and crop. Undo unintended edge-drag cropping, or adjust the transform until the full border and camera opening are visible.
- An animated or masked asset behaves differently than expected: Confirm the asset format and filter controls against the OBS version installed on your computer. The cited overlay guidance recommends WEBM for animated transparent overlays, but exact behavior and filter labels can vary by version.
