Add a favicon by placing an image file where your site serves it, then referencing that file with a <link rel="icon"> element inside the page’s <head>. The smallest working example is:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">The leading slash makes the URL root-relative, so it points to the top-level directory of the deployed site. The same approach works with PNG, GIF, and (in browsers that support it) SVG files.
The essential favicon setup
A favicon is the small icon browsers show for a document in tabs, bookmarks, and related browser interface areas. It is an image resource, not text embedded in the page. You need two things:
- An icon file in a format your target browsers support.
- An HTML link in the document
<head>whosehrefresolves to that file.
For the conventional root-level ICO file, use:

</html>Save the icon as favicon.ico in the site’s top-level directory, deploy both files, and load a page from that deployment. The explicit link is useful even though many browsers and other software automatically look for /favicon.ico.

PNG, GIF, SVG, and multiple icon sizes
The file extension and the MIME hint should agree. A PNG example is:
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">When a site provides more than one icon, browsers can use media, type, and sizes as selection hints. You can therefore publish several dimensions and formats:

<link rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml" href="/favicon.svg">Use only files you actually deploy. If an icon URL returns a missing-file response, the browser cannot use that entry and may fall back to another entry or to its conventional lookup.

Choose the correct path
Root-relative paths
A path beginning with / starts at the deployed site’s root:

The URL above always means https://your-domain.example/images/favicon.svg (with your actual domain), regardless of whether the current page is / or /docs/setup/.

Document-relative paths
A path without a leading slash is resolved from the current document URL:
<link rel="icon" href="images/favicon.svg" type="image/svg+xml">On /docs/setup/, that can resolve under /docs/setup/images/. Use this form only when that is where the file is deployed. A filename such as favicon.ico similarly resolves relative to the current document, while /favicon.ico always targets the site root.
Framework public or static directories
Many frameworks expose a project directory named public or static at the web root. Put the icon in the directory your framework maps to the root, then reference its public URL, such as /favicon.png. The filesystem location and the browser URL are not necessarily identical; verify the URL produced by your deployment.

Place every favicon link inside <head>, not in <body>:

</head>rel="icon" identifies the linked resource as the document icon. The type value describes the image format, and sizes tells the browser the intrinsic dimensions when they are known. A media attribute can provide another selection hint when you intentionally publish context-specific icons.
Favicon versus a PWA manifest
A normal favicon covers browser-document contexts such as tabs and bookmarks. A progressive web app also needs a web app manifest for installation, splash screens, and operating-system contexts. Link the manifest separately:

<link rel="manifest" href="/app.webmanifest">The manifest’s icons entries use an icon src and may include sizes. Relative src values are resolved against the manifest URL, not against the HTML document URL. A manifest supplements the favicon; it does not replace the <link rel="icon"> element.

- Create or export the icon in ICO, PNG, GIF, or a supported SVG form.
- Copy it to the directory that your host serves at the intended public URL.
- Add
<link rel="icon" ...>inside<head>. - Set
hrefto the exact deployed path, including capitalization. - Use a matching
typevalue and addsizeswhen publishing known dimensions. - Deploy the HTML and asset together.
- Open the icon URL directly in a browser to confirm that the file is reachable and displays as an image.
- For a PWA, inspect the manifest and each manifest icon independently.
Why a favicon is not showing
The link is outside the head
Move the element into the page’s <head>. A link in the body is not the intended document-icon declaration.
The URL points to the wrong directory
Open the exact href URL directly. If the page is nested but the asset is at the domain root, change images/favicon.png to /images/favicon.png. Conversely, remove the leading slash only when the file truly lives relative to each document.
The filename or capitalization differs
Compare the deployed filename character by character with href. A file named Favicon.PNG is not necessarily the same resource as favicon.png on the server.

The response is not an image
Check the server response for the icon URL. It should return an image content type matching the file, such as an ICO, PNG, GIF, or SVG type. A generated HTML error page saved at an image URL cannot serve as a favicon.
You are checking the wrong icon system
If the problem appears only during app installation, inspect /app.webmanifest and its icons entries. The ordinary favicon link controls document UI; manifest icons control installation-related contexts.
Several links compete
Review all rel="icon" entries. Ensure each URL exists and that type, sizes, and any media conditions describe the intended candidates. Remove stale entries while diagnosing selection.
Performance, reliability, and maintenance
Keep the icon files small and publish only the sizes and formats you need. Multiple links give the browser choices, but every referenced URL must remain valid after deployment. Use one consistent naming scheme, test from the same URL structure your users visit, and include the favicon check in deployments that move assets between public, static, or another web-root directory.
For a site with nested routes, root-relative URLs reduce path surprises. For a site deployed under a subdirectory rather than a domain root, confirm the host’s public base path before choosing a leading slash; a root-relative URL points to the domain root, not automatically to the application’s subdirectory.
