In OBS Studio, put the countdown slate into the playback sequence between your gaming VODs, or switch to a separate slate scene at each video boundary. OBS can play a VLC playlist, but its documented playlist controls do not automatically insert a separate slate after every item. Plan the order explicitly and rehearse the full sequence before going live.
Choose how the countdown will appear
There are two dependable approaches: include countdown media between the VODs in one ordered sequence, or use a separate scene and switch to it between videos. The first makes the intended order explicit. The second gives you direct control over when the slate appears, but requires a scene change at each boundary.
| Approach | Best for | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Countdown video in the sequence | An animated timer and a fixed, repeatable order | Place the countdown file between each pair of VODs. Confirm how the chosen sources advance through the sequence. |
| Separate countdown scene | Manual control over timing and transitions | Switch scenes at each video boundary. A hotkey can make the switch practical, but test the timing and sequence. |
| Static slate | A simple holding screen | A still image does not count down by itself. Use a countdown video or another timer source if viewers need to see time remaining. |
OBS documents VLC playlist playback, loop and shuffle controls, and separate media, image, and text sources. The cited documentation does not promise that OBS will automatically trigger a separate slate after each VLC playlist item.
Prepare OBS, VLC, and your media
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The OBS VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the architectures match.
- Organize the files. Put the gaming VODs and countdown media in a known location, and decide the exact playback order before building the sequence.
- Create a program scene. In OBS, add a scene for the video playback. Add a VLC Video source and load the gaming VODs in the order you want them to play.
- Check playlist behavior. Set loop and shuffle according to the intended show. For a fixed sequence with slates between specific VODs, avoid shuffle and verify exactly what happens when playback reaches the end of an item.
Build the countdown slate
Animated countdown
Create or use a local countdown video with the desired duration, wording, and visual layout. Add it as media in the playback sequence, or place it in its own scene as a Media Source. OBS’s Media Source settings include an option to restart playback when the source becomes active; enable and test this if the countdown should start from the beginning each time that scene is activated.

Static or editable slate
For a still design, add an Image source. For editable wording, add a Text source. You can combine these with other sources in a scene. A static image will remain on screen until you change scenes or otherwise replace it; it does not provide a ticking timer on its own.
Put the slate between the VODs
Option A: Make one explicit sequence
Place each countdown video between the relevant VODs in the playback order. For example: VOD 1, countdown, VOD 2, countdown, VOD 3. This makes the intended show order visible in your media arrangement. If your setup uses a VLC playlist for the VODs and a separate Media Source for the slate, do not assume the slate will be inserted automatically at each playlist boundary. Verify how the sources advance in your actual scene.

- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Option B: Switch to a slate scene at each boundary
- Create a dedicated countdown scene and configure its media to restart on activation if needed.
- In OBS, open Settings > Hotkeys and assign convenient keys to switch to the VOD scene and countdown scene.
- During the show, switch to the countdown scene when one VOD ends, then return to the VOD scene when the countdown finishes.
- Rehearse the complete sequence, including repeated scene activations, so you know whether the countdown restarts and how playback resumes when you return to the VOD scene.
OBS’s Sources Guide covers scenes, source types such as media, image, and text, and hotkeys. It does not establish automatic per-item slate triggering for a VLC playlist, so any macro, plugin, or automation should be tested in the exact configuration you plan to use.
Send the OBS show to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream setup and follow YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain or select the stream details, including the stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key using the available setup option.
- Set up the show in OBS and start streaming only when the YouTube live event is ready. YouTube’s encoder instructions support software as well as hardware encoders; dedicated encoder hardware is not a basic requirement for this OBS workflow.
- Before a public broadcast, run a private or otherwise non-public rehearsal. Check the VOD-to-slate order, countdown restart, scene transitions, video playback, and audio.
YouTube describes encoder streaming for gameplay broadcasts and advanced production. Follow the current setup instructions in YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Check copyright and channel suitability
Having permission to play a game does not automatically establish that every element in a VOD is cleared for a public livestream. Before using a recording, check the rights and terms that apply to its game footage, soundtrack, overlays, and any third-party material. A countdown slate changes the presentation and timing; it does not itself resolve copyright or channel-policy questions. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before broadcasting or monetizing.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The VLC Video source is missing or will not load: Confirm VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source again.
- The slate does not appear between playlist items: The documented VLC playlist controls do not promise automatic insertion of a separate scene or source. Put countdown media into the sequence explicitly or switch scenes at the boundary.
- The countdown resumes partway through: Check the Media Source’s restart-on-activation setting and test whether the source is actually being deactivated and reactivated when you switch scenes.
- The playlist order changes unexpectedly: Check shuffle and loop settings, then rehearse the playlist from its beginning to verify the sequence.
- The show pauses or cuts when switching scenes: Test the precise scene and source arrangement before going live. Confirm which source is playing in each scene and when it starts or resumes.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Recheck the selected YouTube service or account connection and the stream key in OBS against the live setup in YouTube Studio. Do not share the stream key publicly.
