In OBS, create a separate countdown scene and switch to it when one podcast episode ends; switch back to the next episode when the break is over. Add the timer as a Browser Source using a web page or a local file, then check the scene’s audio and rehearse the handoff before going live.

Build a countdown scene in OBS

  1. Create the two scenes. In OBS, make one scene for the podcast episode and another for the intermission countdown. Scenes let you arrange the video layout and add media or devices. See the OBS Studio overview.
  2. Add the timer to the countdown scene. Select that scene, add a Browser Source, and load a countdown page URL or a local countdown file. OBS Browser Source supports both. Choose a timer that can stay visible for the length of your break, and test how it looks on your stream canvas. See OBS Browser Source documentation.
  3. Set up the handoff. At the end of an episode, switch from its scene to the countdown scene; when the next episode is ready, switch back. OBS provides Cut and Fade transitions: Cut changes immediately, while Fade makes the change more gradual. If you want to prepare the next scene before it appears to viewers, use Studio Mode to keep the live scene separate from the scene being prepared. Rehearse the transition that suits your show’s pacing.

Choose a timer source and test its behavior

A URL is convenient when the timer is hosted on a web page; a local file avoids relying on that page being reachable during the broadcast. Those are different trade-offs, not guarantees about a particular timer. Check whether the timer starts or resets when its scene appears, whether it remains available if your internet connection drops, and whether its styling and size work at your intended resolution. OBS documentation confirms URL and local-file loading, but it does not establish a preferred countdown provider or a universal reset behavior.

Before broadcasting, view the timer in the actual OBS scene at stream size. Confirm that the numbers are legible, the countdown lasts for the planned break, and the display starts or resets as you expect. The exact behavior depends on the timer implementation you choose.

Decide what viewers hear during the break

A visual countdown does not automatically control the stream’s audio. Decide whether the intermission should have silence, music, or a host voiceover, then check which audio sources are active in the countdown scene. If you step away, make sure the microphone is muted if you do not want it heard. YouTube’s live-stream monetization and breaks guidance makes clear that a break overlay does not affect audio sources and advises muting the microphone when leaving.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its encoder connection details and stream key in OBS. Keep the key private.
  2. Use RTMPS for an encrypted connection, as recommended in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  3. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder from OBS. Once the preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow.
  4. Run a rehearsal of the full sequence: episode scene, countdown scene, audio during the break, and return to the next episode. YouTube also recommends testing its break overlay before using it live; test your own scene and timer in the broadcast setup as well.

Troubleshoot common countdown problems

  • The timer is missing or blank: Check that the Browser Source is in the countdown scene and that its URL or local file is correct. If it uses a web page, confirm that the page is reachable; if it is a local file, confirm the file is available on the computer running OBS.
  • The timer does not start or reset on the scene change: Do not assume that showing the scene restarts the countdown. Check the chosen timer’s behavior and test repeated switches before the stream.
  • The countdown is hard to read: Adjust its size and placement in the OBS canvas, then inspect it at the intended output size rather than judging only from a large preview.
  • Viewers hear unwanted sound: Check the countdown scene’s active audio sources and mute the microphone before stepping away if needed. A visual overlay does not mute audio.
  • The next episode appears abruptly or the wrong scene is live: Rehearse the Cut or Fade transition and, if useful, prepare the next scene in Studio Mode before switching it live.
  • YouTube does not show the encoder preview: Check the stream key and encoder connection details in OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded podcast video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and the service can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
