In Wirecast 16, put a slate image or media shot between the videos in a Playlist Shot, give the slate a finite duration, then select New Playlist – Completion from the countdown gear menu while the playlist is playing. That mode shows both the current shot countdown and the playlist countdown.
Create a playlist shot
- In a layer, click +, choose Shots, select New Playlist Shot, and click Add. The playlist shot appears with a playlist badge and its duration. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 user guide documents this workflow.
- Add the video clips by dragging clips or shots onto the playlist shot. Alternatively, double-click the playlist shot to open the Playlist tab, then choose Shots > New Shot to add items.
Insert and time the slate
Choose an image or media shot
Prepare the slate as an image shot or media shot, then place it in the playlist sequence between the video shots where you want the interstitial to appear. Wirecast playlists can contain videos, images, audio, and live shots; the slate is an ordinary playlist item, not a separate special-purpose slate feature. A still image suits a static message, while a short media clip can add motion or audio.
Set a finite duration
- In the playlist, right-click the slate item and choose Modify Duration.
- Enter how long the slate should display and click OK. Choose a brief interval for a quick separator or a longer one if viewers need time to read it; Telestream does not prescribe a particular duration.
A finite duration lets playback advance to the next item. Avoid Apply to All unless you intend to change the duration of every playlist item. The guide says clips need an assigned duration; live sources default to infinite duration.
Show the countdowns
- Start the playlist in the Live Broadcast Area.
- Click the countdown gear icon beneath that area.
- Select New Playlist – Completion to display both the current shot countdown and the playlist countdown. Select the current shot name instead if you want only its countdown.
Limitations and version notes
- Wirecast does not support nested playlists, so a playlist cannot contain another playlist.
- Do not delete shots while the playlist is running.
- The procedure above is documented for Wirecast 16. Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.3, released June 10, 2026, and includes fixes involving countdown-clock and media-playback behavior. If a timer or playback behaves differently, check your installed version and Telestream’s Wirecast release notes.
