To show a countdown and the current video title on a 24/7 YouTube stream, add them as overlay sources in the software or hosted playout service that builds the video sent to YouTube. YouTube does not automatically read a playlist and put its current filename on screen. For a local OBS setup, create the playlist, layer the overlays above it, and send OBS’s output to YouTube Live Control Room.
How the overlays work
Your viewers see the finished video frame sent by your encoder or playout service. The countdown and now-playing text must therefore be created in that output; a YouTube playlist or stream title alone will not generate either overlay. A text source can show a fixed label, but automatically changing the title requires a playlist system or other mechanism that supplies the current item.
The steps below use OBS for local playback and encoding. OBS’s built-in Media Source is suited to looping one file; its VLC Video source supports a list of files, with loop and shuffle controls. The latter requires a compatible VLC installation. OBS Media Sources
Build the video playlist in OBS
For one repeating video
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the video file and enable its Loop property. Confirm that the source is visible in the preview.
For a playlist of videos
- Install VLC in a version compatible with your OBS installation. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; if the source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture is compatible with OBS.
- In Sources, select + and add VLC Video. Add the media files to its playlist using the source properties.
- Set the playlist behavior there: enable looping if it should repeat, and choose shuffle only if you do not need a fixed sequence. Leave shuffle off for ordered playback.
- Check the scene preview to ensure the video fits the canvas. Adjust the source transform if it is cropped or letterboxed; preserve the source’s proportions unless you intentionally want to stretch it.
Add now-playing text
Static label
For text that does not change—such as “Now playing”—add an OBS text source from the Sources panel and position it above the video source in the source list. Higher sources render over lower sources. Set the font, size, color, and background or outline for readability against the video. This label will remain the same; it will not display each playlist filename automatically.

Automatically updated title
For a changing title, use a playlist tool that exposes the current item to an overlay. Two independent third-party OBS projects describe this kind of feature:
- 24/7 Playout describes a Now/Next display with progress and remaining time. Its project page describes a Windows x64 release and recommends OBS 32.x or compatible. Check the current release, operating-system support, and OBS compatibility before installing.
- OBS Playlist Deck describes a dock that can show the current and next items and operate supported media sources. Its project page warns that its builds are unsigned, so review the project and installation risks before using them.
These are third-party projects, not built-in OBS features; their stated functionality is not a guarantee that a current build will work with your particular system. Follow the setup instructions on the selected project’s page, then preview the overlay while changing playlist items to confirm the title updates as intended.

Add the countdown
First decide what the timer is counting down to. A countdown to a scheduled stream start is different from a timer between playlist videos. A countdown source needs an implementation that supports the behavior you want; the OBS and YouTube help pages cited here do not document a native countdown widget or its setup.
- For a scheduled start, choose a widget or script that can count down to a specified date and time. Confirm its time zone and what it displays when the target time arrives.
- For a between-video countdown, choose an implementation that explicitly supports a playlist transition or interval. Verify whether it starts at every transition, how long it runs, and whether it returns to the next video automatically.
Use the selected widget or script’s current instructions rather than assuming all countdowns reset or run continuously in the same way. Add its browser, script, or other supported source to the scene above the video, position it, and test the full transition before relying on it for a live broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule the broadcast and review its visibility and stream settings.
- In Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in the scene, publish it, or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server details if OBS does not populate them for the selected connection method.
- Set output and video settings appropriate to your source and available upload connection. In OBS, check Settings > Output for the encoder and bitrate, and Settings > Video for the base and output resolution and frame rate. Do not raise bitrate or resolution beyond what your connection can sustain reliably.
- Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, follow the corresponding go-live flow in Live Control Room; starting the encoder and making the scheduled broadcast live are distinct steps. Verify the video, overlays, and audio in YouTube’s preview before confirming the broadcast.
Keep the stream key private and use YouTube’s current on-screen instructions for the broadcast you created. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is YouTube’s stated archive behavior, not a substitute for checking that the broadcast is recording as expected.
Keep a 24/7 stream running
With a local OBS setup, the computer must continue playing and encoding, and its internet connection must keep reaching YouTube. A stable setup reduces interruptions but cannot guarantee that the computer, connection, or YouTube ingest will stay online continuously.

Watch for dropped frames
If OBS reports dropped frames, check whether the connection is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. The OBS Help Portal explains that OBS may drop frames rather than buffer in order to keep the stream playing. Reduce bitrate or output demands if needed, and investigate the network connection before restarting the broadcast. OBS Help Portal: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues
HLS is a separate ingest choice
Most OBS users do not need to configure HLS-specific details. If you deliberately choose YouTube HLS ingest, YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow the HLS instructions rather than applying these requirements to a standard RTMP setup. Common problems and fixes
- The playlist plays, but the title never changes: A normal text source is static. Use a playlist tool that supplies the current item to its overlay, and check that the tool supports your OBS version and media source.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install a compatible VLC version and restart OBS. Confirm that VLC and OBS use compatible architectures.
- The countdown reaches zero and stays there, or does not reset: Check whether the selected widget is built for a scheduled start or for playlist transitions. Confirm its documented behavior at zero and test a full cycle.
- The overlay is hidden behind the video: Move the text or widget source above the video in OBS’s Sources list, then check visibility and scene selection.
- OBS connects but frames drop: Compare the configured bitrate with the sustained capacity and stability of the upload connection. Lowering bitrate or output demands can help; changing overlays will not fix a network bottleneck.
- YouTube receives video, but the scheduled event is not live: Check Live Control Room and complete its go-live step for that scheduled broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube stream that keeps looping without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera. Confirm that its current workflow provides the particular countdown or changing now-playing overlay you need before choosing it, since those overlay features are not established here.
