A looping countdown clip can serve as the timer; a break scene can be as simple as a calm background image with a text overlay. Rehearse the full countdown-to-break-to-program cycle before relying on it during a continuous stream.
1. Create a program scene and a break scene
OBS scenes are layouts built from sources such as media, images, and text. In the Scenes panel, keep the Yoga Nidra program in its own scene and add another scene named something clear, such as “Break.” Keeping the break separate lets you prepare its visual and switch back to the program without rebuilding the layout.
- In the Scenes panel, select + and create a scene for the Yoga Nidra program. Add the video or other sources that make up the program.
- Select + again and create a separate scene called Break.
- Check the scene order and names so the intended program and break are easy to identify during a live session.

2. Build a calm break screen
In the Break scene, add an image background, then place text or a transparent graphic above it. The source order matters: keep the background below the overlay so the words remain visible.

- Select the Break scene, then add an Image source from the Sources panel and choose the background file.
- Resize and position the image to fill the canvas. Check that it is not stretched or cropped in a distracting way.
- Add a text source or a transparent image containing text, such as “Rest period” or “The practice will resume shortly.”
- Position the overlay and preview the scene at the stream’s output size to make sure it is readable.
OBS’s BRB screen tutorial demonstrates the separate-scene, background-image, and overlay approach. For a low-stimulation Yoga Nidra break, keep the image and wording simple and avoid abrupt visual changes.
3. Choose how the countdown appears
Use a pre-rendered countdown clip
Add the countdown file as a Media Source. OBS Media Source supports common local video and audio formats. Its Loop property is off by default, so enable it if the clip should repeat. If it should play once and then hand over to a break scene, leave looping off and trigger the scene change separately.

Media playback behavior and scene visibility should be checked in your actual setup: changing scenes does not by itself guarantee that a media source starts at the beginning or continues in the way you intend.
Use a timer script for a countdown and automatic change
A timer script can display a countdown and perform an expiry action, such as changing a scene or source. The exact options depend on the particular script and its version. The community-maintained timer resource documents start conditions such as streaming starting, a selected scene becoming active, or a timer text source becoming visible.

Its version 5.8 update, dated February 15, 2024, notes that some expiry lists require source or scene names to be entered manually. It also warns that a list containing only one source or scene will not reset the timer. Follow the instructions for the version you install and verify the names and reset behavior rather than assuming every OBS timer script works alike. 4. Decide how scenes will switch

Studio Mode and scene hotkeys are OBS features described in the Quick Start Guide. A 2019 forum reply also suggested separate scenes with timers and a scene-switcher plugin for alternating periods; treat that as an older community suggestion, not confirmation that a particular plugin is current or compatible. If considering that approach, verify the plugin’s current release against your installed OBS version.

5. Rehearse the complete sequence
Before the first live session, test the actual sequence from program to countdown to break and back. A countdown that looks correct by itself can still fail if the timer starts at the wrong moment, the media source resumes unexpectedly, or the return transition is unclear.
- Start the countdown under the condition you intend to use, such as starting the stream or activating a particular scene.
- Watch the countdown reach expiry and confirm the break scene appears at the intended time.
- Check what happens to the Yoga Nidra media when you leave its scene and when you return. Confirm playback, audio, and any desired restart or continuation behavior.
- Verify the break-to-program transition and make sure the program is ready before the break ends.
- Test after stopping and restarting the stream, especially if the timer is configured to start on a stream event or scene visibility.
- For a script, confirm that scene and source names match exactly and that the timer resets as intended for every interval.
