To add a chat widget, create and configure the widget in your chat provider’s dashboard, copy the account-specific embed snippet, place it on every page that should show chat (normally just before the closing </body> tag), publish the site, and test the live page. WordPress users can use a provider plugin when one is available or paste the same type of snippet into the site manually.

The exact dashboard labels and installation steps depend on the provider and widget generation. Zendesk’s current Messaging Web Widget and its Web Widget (Classic) use different setup paths, while tawk.to documents both a WordPress plugin and manual insertion. Confirm which product and widget type your account uses before copying instructions.

What you need before installing a chat widget

Prepare these items before opening your provider dashboard:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An administrator login for the chat or customer-service provider.
  • Access to your website’s code, hosting control panel, or content-management system (CMS).
  • The list of pages where visitors should see chat. A shared site footer is usually the simplest place to load one widget across the site.
  • A way to publish changes and clear or bypass your site cache.
  • A private browsing window for testing the published result.

Do not copy a snippet from a tutorial, another website, or a different account. The generated code identifies your own property, workspace, or widget. For tawk.to, selecting the wrong property produces code that is valid but connected to the wrong account.

Choose the installation method

There are two practical approaches: manual code insertion for a custom site, or a CMS integration such as a WordPress plugin. The right choice depends on how much control you need over page visibility and whether your provider supplies a maintained plugin.

Approach Where you work Best fit Site coverage Main dependency Checks after publishing
Provider-generated snippet Site template, shared footer, or page HTML Custom sites and any CMS without a suitable plugin Every page containing the snippet; a shared template can cover the whole site Permission to edit and publish HTML Correct account/property, cache, browser console, live visitor view
WordPress plugin WordPress admin Site owners who want dashboard-based installation Often site-wide by default, with provider-specific visibility controls A plugin that supports your provider and WordPress setup Plugin status, visibility rules, cache, live page
Manual WordPress insertion Theme or site-wide code area Providers without a plugin or teams requiring direct control Determined by the template or pages where code is inserted Safe access to theme/template files and a rollback plan Published source, cache, console, widget availability

A plugin is not automatically available for every provider. If your provider does not document a WordPress integration, use its standard embed instructions rather than installing an unrelated plugin.

Step 1: Identify your provider and widget generation

Open the provider’s installation or channel settings and identify the exact widget product. Product generations can have different snippets, authentication options, and dashboard labels. In Zendesk, the current Messaging Web Widget instructions are separate from the Web Widget (Classic) live-chat setup. A walkthrough for one should not be substituted for the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the account and property

Check the account, brand, site, or property selector before generating code. If a provider lets one login manage multiple properties, switch to the property that represents the website you are editing. Save or copy the snippet only after that selection is correct.

Decide where chat should appear

Choose between site-wide chat and selected URLs. Site-wide placement is normally handled in a shared footer or global template. Page-specific placement is useful when chat belongs only on support, pricing, checkout, or contact pages; it requires inserting the code only in those templates or using the provider’s documented visibility controls.

Step 2: Configure the widget in the provider dashboard

Installation code only loads the widget. The dashboard controls what visitors see and what information your team receives. Complete the configuration before embedding the code.

Set appearance and behavior

Configure the launcher’s appearance, position, colors, greeting, and any availability state offered by your provider. Keep the launcher visible against your site background and make its label understandable on mobile screens. If the provider separates online and offline behavior, set both states so visitors receive a clear response when no agent is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure visitor forms

Many live-chat products let you request a name, email address, order number, or pre-chat question. Ask only for information your support workflow uses. A form shown before chat can change the visitor experience, so publish a test conversation and confirm that submitted fields arrive in the correct agent view.

Review security and domain controls

Use the provider’s documented domain allowlists, authentication settings, or other security controls when available. These settings may prevent the widget from appearing on unauthorized domains or may protect authenticated messaging features. Record the domains and subdomains that should be permitted, including any staging hostname you will use for testing.

Step 3: Add the snippet to a custom website

This is the standard path when you control the site’s HTML or templates.

  1. Open the provider’s installation screen. Choose the website widget or web-messaging channel, not a mobile SDK or unrelated integration.
  2. Generate the code for the correct property. Copy the complete snippet exactly as displayed. Do not remove attributes, change the account identifier, or combine it with code from another property.
  3. Open the shared page template. Look for a global footer, layout file, or equivalent template used by every page where chat should appear.
  4. Paste the snippet before the closing </body> tag. tawk.to’s instructions specifically place its snippet before </body>; Zendesk’s current Messaging Web Widget guide likewise instructs placing its snippet before that tag on each intended page.
  5. Save and publish the template. A change in a local editor, staging environment, or draft CMS page does not make the widget available to visitors until the production site is published.
  6. Repeat for pages not using the shared template. Landing pages, checkout shells, microsites, and separately hosted sections may require their own insertion.
  7. Open the public URL and test. Use a private window or clear the browser cache so an older page copy does not hide the new script.

Keep the provider’s snippet intact. If your deployment pipeline minifies or rewrites scripts, verify that it does not remove the provider’s required attributes or delay the script in a way the provider does not support.

tawk.to plugin route

  1. Sign in to the WordPress administrator dashboard.
  2. Install and activate the provider’s official tawk.to plugin.
  3. Open the plugin settings and authenticate or select the tawk.to account and property that should serve this site.
  4. Save the connection and enable the widget.
  5. Review visibility controls. The documented plugin behavior can display the widget across the site by default, with controls for limiting it to selected URLs.
  6. Clear any WordPress, hosting, CDN, or page-cache layer, then test a published page in a private window.

Because the plugin connects to a selected property, verify that property after activation. A successful plugin connection to the wrong property can look like a functioning installation while sending conversations to the wrong workspace.

When a plugin is not documented

Do not assume that a plugin made for one provider can load another provider’s widget. If your provider does not offer a supported WordPress plugin, use its manual snippet route or its documented WordPress integration.

Step 5: Add chat to WordPress manually

Manual insertion is appropriate when no supported plugin exists or when your team controls a site-wide code location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up the current theme or create a child theme before editing template files.
  2. Locate the template that renders the site footer or the provider-approved global code area.
  3. Paste the complete provider snippet immediately before </body>, unless that provider’s instructions specify another location.
  4. Save the file and publish the change.
  5. Check a normal page, a page using a different template, and any page where chat should intentionally be absent.
  6. If your WordPress stack uses full-page caching, purge it and retest in a private window.

Theme updates can overwrite direct edits. A child theme or the provider’s supported code-injection method can reduce that maintenance risk, but use only methods documented for your hosting and WordPress setup.

Step 6: Follow the correct Zendesk setup route

Zendesk Messaging Web Widget

Zendesk’s current Messaging Web Widget instructions use a generated snippet placed before </body> on every page where the widget should appear. First complete the widget’s appearance, forms, and security settings in the Zendesk admin area. Then copy the snippet for that widget, add it to the relevant templates, publish, and test the live pages.

Zendesk Web Widget (Classic)

Web Widget (Classic) has a separate live-chat setup guide and different dashboard flow. Select the Classic product in your account before following its instructions. Do not paste a Messaging Web Widget snippet into a Classic configuration, or use Classic instructions for a Messaging widget. If the labels in your account do not match a guide, stop and confirm the widget generation shown in the admin interface.

Publish and verify the live widget

Verification must happen on the published URL, not only in the provider preview or a logged-in CMS window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the exact public page where the widget should appear.
  2. Use a private or incognito window, or clear the site and browser cache first.
  3. Check desktop and mobile widths. Confirm that the launcher does not cover navigation, checkout controls, cookie controls, or important form fields.
  4. Open the launcher and submit the configured pre-chat form, if enabled.
  5. Confirm that the conversation reaches the intended agent workspace and that visitor details are present.
  6. Test an offline or closed-hours state if your provider supports one, and confirm that the visitor sees the configured fallback.
  7. Check a page where chat should not appear if you configured URL-level visibility.
  8. Record the tested URL, date, property, and widget generation so future editors know what was verified.

Troubleshoot a widget that does not appear

The script is missing from the published page

View the live page source or rendered HTML and search for a distinctive part of the provider snippet. If it is absent, the edit was made in the wrong template, was not published, or was removed by a deployment process. Add it to the shared template or the specific page and publish again.

An old page is still being served

Purge WordPress, host, CDN, and browser caches, then retest in a private window. A cached HTML document can hide a correctly installed script.

The wrong account or property is receiving chats

Return to the provider dashboard, select the intended property, regenerate or recopy its snippet, and replace the existing code. For plugin installations, recheck the connected property in plugin settings.

A Content Security Policy blocks the script

A strict Content Security Policy (CSP) can prevent a third-party widget from loading even when the snippet is present. Open the browser developer tools, inspect the Console, and look for CSP violation messages naming the blocked script or connection. Update the site’s CSP according to the provider’s documented domains and your security policy, then retest. Do not disable CSP broadly just to make the widget appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The widget appears on some pages but not others

Compare the templates and URL rules for a working page and a failing page. The failing page may use a separate layout, omit the global footer, or be excluded by plugin visibility settings. Add the snippet to the missing template or adjust the documented visibility rule.

The launcher appears but conversations fail

Check the provider’s online status, forms, routing, and security settings. Confirm that the test visitor can submit the form and that the selected workspace has an available destination for the conversation. If the launcher loads but the panel cannot connect, inspect the browser Console and network errors for blocked requests.

Maintenance after installation

  • Keep a record of the provider, property, widget generation, insertion location, and pages covered.
  • Retest after theme, CMS, CDN, security-header, or domain changes.
  • Review URL visibility rules when launching new subdomains, checkout flows, or campaign landing pages.
  • Recheck visitor forms and offline behavior when support hours or routing change.
  • Remove obsolete snippets when migrating providers so two launchers do not load together.

These practices help you distinguish a provider configuration issue from a publishing, caching, template, or browser-policy problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below cover installation decisions that commonly remain after the basic setup is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to edit every page individually?

No. If the site uses a shared footer or global template, one insertion can cover all pages rendered by that template. Pages with separate layouts still need their own documented insertion or visibility rule.

Is a WordPress plugin required for live chat?

No. A plugin is optional. Use one when your provider supports it and you want WordPress-based controls; otherwise, insert the provider-generated snippet manually in the appropriate template.

Why does a widget work in the provider preview but not on my public site?

The preview does not prove that production HTML contains the snippet. Check the published source, purge caches, verify the selected property, and inspect the browser Console for Content Security Policy errors.

Can I follow the same Zendesk instructions for every Web Widget?

No. Zendesk Messaging Web Widget and Web Widget (Classic) are separate products with different setup guides. Identify the generation shown in your account before installing code.
