Build the ticker as a hosted web page or local HTML file, add it to an OBS scene as a Browser Source, layer it over your video, then send the finished scene to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the ticker’s legibility and motion in a private or scheduled-stream preview before going live, and confirm you have permission to display the property data and images publicly.
What you need
- A ticker source: a web page or local HTML file containing your brokerage or brand identity and the listing details you want viewers to see.
- OBS Studio: its Browser Source can load hosted pages and local files on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Browser Source documentation describes its dimensions, frame rate, custom CSS, and refresh controls.
- A YouTube live stream: create or schedule it in YouTube Studio so you can copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this connection.
- Rights to use the content: verify that your listing details, prices, photos, and agent or brokerage information may be displayed in a public broadcast under your applicable agreements and rules.
Prepare the branded ticker
Choose the content and source
Decide which listings to feature and how viewers should identify your business. Keep details concise enough to read while scrolling: for example, a property’s location, price, and a short distinguishing detail alongside the brokerage name or logo. Use a hosted page if you want to update it remotely; use a local HTML file if you prefer to keep the ticker asset on the computer running OBS. Either way, check that the page displays correctly at the dimensions you intend to use.
Listing-feed permissions are market- and agreement-specific. Do not assume that an IDX or MLS feed, listing photos, prices, or agent details can be republished on a public stream. Confirm the terms with the listing-data provider, rights holder, and brokerage before broadcasting. OBS and YouTube explain the technical workflow; they do not grant permission to use the material.
Make it readable in motion
- Use clear contrast between text and background, and make the type large enough to read at the final video size.
- Leave safe margins so the ticker is not clipped at the frame edges or hidden by platform controls.
- Choose a scrolling pace that allows viewers to read each listing, and check it against the actual video rather than judging the ticker by itself.
- Avoid covering important faces, property details, or other essential visuals. Keep the ticker’s appearance consistent with the brand without letting decoration crowd the listing information.
Add the ticker in OBS
- Open the scene for the broadcast. In OBS, select the scene that will contain the video and ticker. Add or select the background or video source first so the ticker can sit above it.
- Add a Browser Source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Browser. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Property ticker.”
- Load the ticker. For a hosted ticker, enter its page URL. For a local HTML ticker, enable the local-file option and select the file. OBS Browser Source supports both routes; consult the official Browser Source documentation for the current controls.
- Set its viewport. Enter a width and height that match the ticker layout you designed. The browser viewport controls what the page renders; it is separate from where the source sits in the full video frame.
- Position and size it in the scene. Close or apply the source properties, then place the ticker where it belongs over the video. Check the whole frame for clipping, overlap, and adequate safe margins.
- Adjust page behavior if needed. Browser Source offers frame-rate, refresh, and custom CSS controls. Use them only when the page needs them; for example, a refresh setting matters if the ticker page must reload to pick up changes.
- Check the layer order. Make sure the Browser Source appears above the video or background source in the Sources list so it is visible in the composite.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for the broadcast. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in the ticker.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select the appropriate YouTube connection method and enter or select the stream credentials. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions if the labels or connection flow differ in your version.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the encoder preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, use the Live Control Room to start the public broadcast when the preview is ready.
Test the ticker and encoder before going live
Run a test with representative audio and movement, then inspect the YouTube preview on the intended viewing devices. Verify that the ticker text is readable, scrolls smoothly, stays inside the frame, and does not obscure key visuals. YouTube recommends testing before the live stream and monitoring stream health during the event.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the resolution you plan to send and the upload bandwidth available at the streaming location. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, RTMP or RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. It also advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate; do not assume a single bitrate suits every resolution or connection. Platform recommendations can change, so check the linked page when configuring the encoder.
Troubleshoot common problems
The ticker is blank or does not load
- Confirm the hosted page URL is correct and reachable, or that the selected local file still exists at that path.
- Check the Browser Source viewport dimensions and refresh the source after correcting the page or file.
- If the page has changed since OBS loaded it, use the source’s refresh behavior or reload it before the test.
The ticker is cropped, too small, or hard to read
- Check the Browser Source viewport dimensions separately from its position and scale in the OBS scene.
- Inspect the complete video frame at its intended resolution, then adjust the ticker’s size, margins, contrast, or type size in the page design.
- Slow the scroll if viewers cannot finish reading each listing before it leaves the screen.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
- Verify that OBS is connected to the stream URL and key for the correct YouTube broadcast.
- Check OBS’s connection and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators. Confirm that the selected resolution and bitrate are appropriate for your available upload bandwidth and YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Run another test with representative audio and motion before starting the public stream.
Listing details or images are challenged
Pause the broadcast or remove the disputed material until you have confirmed the applicable rights and permissions with the responsible provider or rights holder. A technically valid overlay does not establish permission to republish its contents.
