Use Resident Evil for the adventure’s structure—visible mechanisms, route gating, traps, backtracking, scarce tools and an advancing threat clock. Use Control for the power fantasy—throwing objects, shifting traversal and interacting with spaces that ignore ordinary physics. In D&D 5e, the combination stays fair when every inference is supported by clues and every extraordinary effect is limited by actions, range, line of sight, charges, cooldowns or consequences.
Start with two complementary design jobs
The two inspirations solve different problems at the table. Resident Evil supplies a readable environment in which a sealed route, dangerous machine or missing component creates a chain of decisions. Capcom’s retrospective summarizes that tone as “Puzzles, traps and all manner of creatures await.” Its examples include a piano puzzle, a falling-ceiling hazard and mansion mechanisms that remain dangerous long after construction. Read the retrospective at Capcom’s Enter the Survival Horror.
Control supplies the player-facing fantasy: a character can move objects, cross impossible spaces and exploit unstable geometry. Remedy describes areas in which “gravity and orientation shift entirely” in its CONTROL Resonant gameplay announcement. In a 5e campaign, that should be a narrow, expressive suite of abilities rather than an unlimited replacement for spells, skills and equipment.

Design each room by asking two questions: what can the characters deduce from the environment, and what can their paranormal tools do that ordinary adventurers cannot? The first question creates horror-puzzle tension; the second creates agency. Neither should erase the other.

Convert a Resident Evil-style puzzle into a fair 5e procedure
1. Show the mechanism and its payoff
Put the sealed door, pressure plate, breaker, emblem socket, lift or trap in view before the characters know how to operate it. Also show what success changes: a refuge opens, a shortcut bypasses a patrol, a cabinet becomes reachable or a route to the next objective unlocks. Players can only make meaningful deductions when the game world exposes both the obstacle and the reason to care.
Describe physical affordances precisely. A breaker box has numbered switches and botanical symbols; a door has three empty crest recesses; a lift has a power indicator and a cable disappearing into a locked service room. Avoid describing a puzzle as an abstract riddle when the characters can see a machine with parts, labels and wear marks.
2. Put every required inference in three independent clues
For each conclusion the players must reach, prepare three clue channels:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Visual: a repeated color, symbol, mural pattern, scratched arrow, matching statue pose or arrangement of objects.
- Written or spoken: a gardener’s note, maintenance log, warning, recorded message, rhyme or NPC testimony.
- Spatial or tactile: a cable leading to a specific panel, a warm conduit, a groove that fits one tool, a vibration behind a wall or a snapped component that reveals an earlier attempt.
The party should be able to solve the puzzle without a roll if they compare the clues. Investigation, Perception, Arcana or thieves’ tools checks can reveal an additional relationship, a safer sequence or a shortcut; a failed check must not remove the only path forward. On a failure, describe what the character notices incorrectly or incompletely and let the players continue testing ideas.
3. Gate routes with tools, not arbitrary information
Keys, fuses, chemicals, crests, crank handles and replacement parts create the routing decisions associated with survival-horror inventory play. Place each required item in the current area or in a previously visited area whose location the players can recall. A tool can be single-use, reusable or breakable, but its availability must be part of the solvable situation rather than a surprise veto.
Use a small inventory map. Record which character carries each component, whether it is consumed, and which unopened route it affects. If a fuse powers either a lift or a security door, state that both systems draw from the same circuit so the choice is informed.
4. Make failure cost time, safety or resources
A wrong sequence should advance danger while preserving progress toward the objective. Appropriate costs include:

- Advancing an alarm or pursuit clock by one segment.
- Attracting a wandering creature or changing its patrol route.
- Consuming or damaging a fuse, reagent or lockpick.
- Closing a safe route while opening a more hazardous one.
- Imposing a temporary condition such as deafened, frightened or restrained until the hazard is dealt with.
Do not make a failed check permanently destroy the only key, lock the party in an unsolvable room or require guessing a new answer that has no clues. The players should regret the cost, not lose the campaign’s forward path.
5. Let checks modify the price
When a character succeeds on Investigation, Arcana, Perception or thieves’ tools, grant a concrete advantage: identify the next component, bypass one step, reduce the alarm increase, prevent a fuse from burning out or reveal which route remains safe. A high roll should make the deduction cheaper or safer, not substitute for player attention. A low roll can still provide a partial observation and leave the mechanism usable.
6. Escalate after every unlock
Each opened room should complicate one dimension of play. Increase the inference difficulty, tighten the remaining time, add a patrol, introduce a consequence for resting or force a resource trade. Escalation makes backtracking meaningful: the same corridor is not safe simply because the characters have seen it before.
Worked example: the mansion breaker room
Three breaker boxes carry botanical symbols. A gardener’s note states the safe growth order. Roots painted on a hallway mural show the same sequence, and a snapped fuse marks the box someone tried first. The party can infer the order without a check. Investigation can reveal that the snapped fuse is still salvageable; thieves’ tools can keep the next fuse from burning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On a wrong switch, advance a one-round alarm and a wandering-monster clock. A spare fuse or tool kit removes the immediate resource cost, but does not erase the alarm already created. Correctly setting the breakers opens a shortcut and a cabinet containing the next key item. The shortcut changes the route, while the cabinet rewards solving the mechanism instead of merely surviving its penalty.
Use the 5e rules as a chassis for environmental danger
The D&D 5e Basic Rules, Running the Game describe traps as mechanical or magical hazards with triggers and effects that characters can detect, disable or avoid through observation and specified checks. They also allow objects to be damaged or destroyed when characters have enough time and the right tools. Use those rules for the physical pieces of your puzzle instead of inventing a new resolution system for every room.
Write each hazard on your preparation sheet with four entries:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Trigger: the switch, pressure plate, sequence error, proximity or time condition that activates it.
- Effect: damage, movement, a condition, a blocked route, noise or a change to the clock.
- Counterplay: the check, tool, action, cover or alternate route that mitigates it.
- Reset: whether the hazard can be retried, requires a replacement part or changes permanently after activation.
For a falling ceiling, for example, describe the pressure plate, allow Perception to notice its seams, let thieves’ tools or a wedge hold it down, and provide a visible side passage. The trap remains frightening because it consumes actions and attention, not because the players have no way to understand it.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRun the room with a repeatable session loop
Use this six-part loop whenever the party enters a puzzle space:
- Inspect: invite descriptions of what the characters examine. Present the three clue channels through ordinary narration.
- Hypothesize: ask the players what they think the mechanism does and what result they expect.
- Interact: resolve the declared action, using an ability check only when uncertainty remains after the clues are considered.
- Pay or risk a cost: consume an action, tool, charge, hit point buffer, safe position or clock segment when the attempt is dangerous.
- Unlock: change the environment visibly—open the door, power the lift, reveal a cabinet or alter gravity.
- Apply a consequence: update the alarm, patrol, resource inventory or physical state so the next decision reflects what just happened.
Keep one visible alarm or pursuit clock for the scenario. Advance it when the party fails an attempt, rests in unsafe territory, makes conspicuous noise or uses a large paranormal effect in a constrained space. A clock can be six boxes on paper; the exact number is less important than showing its current state and stating what the next segment will do.
When players stall, give a costed hint rather than a free solution. The characters may hear a relay click in the correct wall, notice that one symbol is warmer, or find a note—but advance the clock, consume a minor resource or expose them to a patrol in exchange. The choice remains theirs.
Build Control-style powers with explicit limits
Start with a small suite and make each ability answer a different tactical question. The following numbers are homebrew starting points, not official 5e rules. Adjust them to the campaign’s tier and compare their output with a cantrip or ordinary weapon attack.
Recommended Free Tools
| Power | Use and range | Resolution | Limit and purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | Action; hurl an unattended loose object at a creature within 60 feet; line of sight required | Make a ranged spell attack. On a hit, deal 2d8 bludgeoning damage and push the target 10 feet. | Increase damage only at major level milestones or by spending a charge. Requires a suitable object and a clear trajectory. |
| Seize | Once per short rest; target a weakened creature within 30 feet | The target makes a Wisdom save against DC 8 + proficiency bonus + key ability modifier. On a failure, it is charmed until the end of your next turn. | The effect ends early if the creature takes damage. Major foes can be immune or have advantage. |
| Evade | Bonus action; move or teleport up to 15 feet to a space you can see | No attack roll. The destination must be visible and unoccupied. | Use proficiency bonus times per long rest or tie uses to a visible stress clock. |
| Shield | Reaction when hit by an attack | Gain +3 AC against that attack and reduce its damage by 1d8 + proficiency bonus. | Once per short rest. It protects against the triggering hit only. |
Define what “weakened” means before play
Seize needs a clear fictional threshold so players know when it is available. You can mark a creature as weakened when its condition, injuries or an encounter-specific effect makes it vulnerable. A visible bloodied state is one practical option, but the important point is that the state must be announced in the fiction and not introduced only after a player declares Seize.
Protect action economy
Launch uses the action that could have produced an attack, Seize spends a short-rest resource and a target’s turn, Evade competes with bonus-action abilities, and Shield consumes the reaction needed for opportunity attacks or other defenses. These costs prevent the suite from stacking every benefit in one round. If a character gains additional charges, increase pressure elsewhere rather than allowing unlimited uses.

Use range, sight and objects as real constraints
Launch requires a loose object and line of sight. In an empty chamber, the character may have nothing useful to throw; in a cluttered archive, every shelf becomes a tactical choice. Heavy objects can require setup, a two-step interaction or assistance from another character. Fragile evidence, unstable machinery and allies in the line of fire should create consequences for careless use.
Anti-paranormal wards can block Launch, distort Evade’s destination or make Shield unreliable. Telegraph a ward with visual interference, a humming seal or a previous failed attempt. A counter should change tactics, not invalidate the character for an entire session.

Make each major ability a discovery. A relic, ritual or anomalous room can grant Launch; a containment chamber can teach Seize; a shifting stairwell can unlock Evade; a protective object can awaken Shield. This ties advancement to exploration and lets the environment foreshadow the ability before the player receives it.
Every Object of Power should carry a complication. A failed activation can create psychic noise, hostile geometry, a temporary condition or an attention clock. State the risk before the player commits. If the power is required to proceed, the consequence should alter the route or raise danger rather than remove the only solution.
Let the environment answer the powers. A thrown metal cabinet may bridge a gap but also crush a fragile clue. Evade can cross a collapsing floor yet deposit the character in a visible space. Shield can stop a strike but leave the character’s reaction unavailable when a second creature attacks. These interactions make powers expressive without making them universally optimal.

Example: the orientation vault
The party reaches a vault with a sealed lift, three rotating orientation plates and a hallway where gravity intermittently shifts. A maintenance diagram shows the intended plate order, a recorded warning describes the sound made by the correct alignment, and scuff marks on the ceiling show where previous operators were thrown. The clues are sufficient without a check.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The lift requires a replacement fuse found in a side room. Launch can move the fuse across a gap, but only from a visible platform; Evade can cross the gap, but its 15-foot limit leaves the character exposed; Shield protects against falling debris but consumes the reaction needed to catch a teammate. Each attempt advances a two-stage orientation clock. At the first stage, loose objects slide toward the ceiling; at the second, the patrol creature enters.

A wrong plate order triggers a one-round gravity surge and advances the alarm. The party can still reset the plates, but doing so may cost the fuse or force a dangerous route. Once the lift opens, it leads to a new room with a harder inference and fewer safe places to rest. The powers solve positioning problems while the clues still determine the route.
Compare designs before you run them
| Axis | Resident Evil emphasis | Control-inspired emphasis | 5e implementation question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puzzle legibility | Environmental patterns, mechanisms and item dependencies | Improvisation with movable geometry and anomalies | Can players explain the mechanism before rolling? |
| Pressure | Routes, traps, creatures and escape timers | Cooldowns, charges, unstable spaces and positioning | What advances when the party spends time or power? |
| Agency | Locks and clues constrain choices | Object interaction and movement broaden choices | Does each solution preserve more than one viable route? |
| Action economy | Interactions expose characters and consume time | Actions, reactions, bonus actions and charges fuel abilities | Which ordinary attack, defense or movement option is displaced? |
Use this table during preparation to find conflicts. If a puzzle expects a character to spend several rounds manipulating a device while a power lets another character solve it instantly from safety, add a range, sight or object requirement rather than secretly forbidding the power. If a route is already dangerous, do not also make every failed inference permanently fatal.
Troubleshoot common table failures
The players cannot find the next step
Check whether all three clue channels exist and whether at least one is available without a roll. Offer a costed hint, identify the relevant object through sensory detail and keep the clock moving. Never hide the only required inference behind a single failed Investigation check.
The puzzle becomes a single correct guess
Separate deduction from execution. The players should infer the sequence from repeated evidence; the characters’ checks should determine how safely or quickly they carry it out. Add a second route, a partial reset or a consumable tool so a wrong attempt produces information as well as danger.
Launch trivializes every obstacle
Audit the room for loose objects, line-of-sight lanes and unattended targets. Require setup for heavy objects, protect delicate evidence and use wards or cover where appropriate. Keep damage near a cantrip or weapon attack and make the push, not raw damage, the main tactical reward.
Evade or Shield removes horror
Limit uses by proficiency bonus, short-rest recovery or the visible stress clock. Make destinations and reactions matter: a teleport into an observed space may worsen pursuit, and Shield cannot protect against a later hit in the same round. Horror depends on choosing when to spend safety, not on removing safety entirely.
The party rests after every room
Define unsafe territory before the first rest. A rest can advance the pursuit clock, attract a creature or allow the environment to reconfigure. Provide occasional secure refuges so the choice is meaningful rather than punitive.
A failed power activation stops the scenario
Attach consequences to noise, conditions, hostile geometry or attention, never to the existence of the only route forward. The characters can try again after paying the new cost, or use an alternate mundane method revealed by the room’s clues.
Preparation checklist
- Draw or describe the mechanism, its payoff and the routes it affects.
- Write three independent clues for every required inference.
- Place each key, fuse, chemical, crest or replacement part in a discoverable location.
- Define the trigger, effect, counterplay and reset for each trap.
- Choose one visible alarm or pursuit clock and list what each segment changes.
- Mark which actions, reactions, bonus actions, charges and rests power paranormal abilities.
- List environmental counters: wards, cover, fragile evidence, heavy objects and unstable geometry.
- Plan a fail-forward consequence for every wrong sequence or failed activation.
- Prepare a costed hint for the first likely stall.
- Decide what new inference, pressure or resource trade appears after each unlock.
The resulting campaign has Resident Evil’s readable danger and Control’s impossible movement without importing either game wholesale. Players can deduce what the world wants, choose when to risk a power and feel the consequences immediately, while the 5e rules continue to handle checks, attacks, objects and traps in familiar terms.
