Microsoft Office 2019 activation depends on the license you bought. Redeem a new retail key once, install Office from the Microsoft account associated with it, then sign in inside Word or another Office app. Organization-provided volume editions use MAK, KMS, or Active Directory-based activation instead.
Office 2019 is a one-time purchase, not a Microsoft 365 subscription. You do not need an active Microsoft 365 subscription to activate a legitimate retail copy.
Before you start
Have the following ready:
- Your 25-character Office 2019 product key, if it has not been redeemed.
- The personal Microsoft account you want to associate with Office. You will need it to reinstall Office later.
- A Windows PC with an internet connection.
- The country or region where the key was purchased.
Activate a retail copy of Office 2019
1. Redeem a new product key
- Open Office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you want to associate with Office 2019.
- Enter the 25-character product key when prompted. It normally has five groups of five characters, separated by hyphens.
- Choose the country or region and language, then select Next and complete redemption.
Redemption associates the license with your Microsoft account. Use the setup page only for a new, unused key; do not repeatedly enter a key that has already been redeemed.
2. Download and install Office
- Open account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used during redemption.
- Find Office 2019 under Services & subscriptions and select Install.
- Choose available installation options, such as language and, where offered, 32-bit or 64-bit, then select Install.
- Run the downloaded installer.
Avoid installing an incompatible second Office edition. Microsoft 365 and volume-license Office Professional Plus 2019 cannot be installed together in the same installation; the installer may report that the products cannot be installed at the same time.

3. Complete activation in an Office app
- Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or another installed Office 2019 application.
- When prompted to activate, select Sign in.
- Use the Microsoft account that owns the Office 2019 license and follow the prompts.
If the Activation Wizard opens, follow its instructions.
Use the Office Activation Wizard
For a non-subscription Office activation wizard, internet activation works as follows:
- Select I want to activate the software over the Internet.
- Select Next. If selecting Next appears to do nothing, press Enter.
- Wait for the activation confirmation, then close and reopen the Office app.
If telephone activation is available, select I want to activate the software by telephone, then select Next. Under Step 1, select your country or region and call the displayed Product Activation Center number. Provide the Installation ID shown under Step 2, enter the returned Confirmation ID under Step 3, and select Next.
Microsoft 365 does not support telephone activation. Office 2019 is a non-subscription product, but telephone activation availability depends on the installed product and the wizard presented on that computer.

The message This product key has already been used means the key was previously associated with a Microsoft account; it does not necessarily mean activation has failed.
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account originally used to redeem the key.
- Find Office 2019 and select Install.
- After installation, open Word or Excel and sign in with that same account.
If Office is missing from Services & subscriptions, try other personal Microsoft accounts you may have used to buy or redeem it. A work or school purchase may be attached to your organization’s account. One Microsoft account can associate up to 25 one-time purchases of Office 2019, Office 2016, or Office 2013.
Transfer Office 2019 to another computer
Office Home & Student 2019, Home & Business 2019, and Professional 2019 are licensed for installation on a single computer. Reinstalling on another computer or after a hardware change can trigger a maximum-activations error.

A transfer must comply with the Software License Terms. Microsoft’s documented procedure is to uninstall Office from the original computer and activate the replacement installation by telephone when that option is available. Do not leave the same retail license active on both computers.
To view the terms in an Office app, open File > Account > About Word or File > Account > About Excel, then select View the Microsoft Software License Terms. Office 2019 transfer terms are in section 3, Transfer to a Third Party.
Activate Office 2019 supplied by an organization
If your organization supplied Office Professional Plus 2019 or another volume edition, do not enter its key at Office.com/setup. Volume-license keys are not retail keys and use volume activation. An administrator normally configures one of these methods:
- MAK: A Multiple Activation Key activates the Office client directly with Microsoft.
- KMS: Office activates against an organization’s Key Management Service host. The default KMS port is 1688.
- Active Directory-based activation: Domain-joined computers obtain activation from the organization’s directory infrastructure.
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt in the folder containing ospp.vbs:

For a KMS configuration, an administrator can use:

These ospp.vbs commands activate Office client products only. Windows activation must be handled separately with slmgr.vbs.

Fix common Office 2019 activation errors
| Message or symptom | What to do |

| This product key has already been used | Stop entering the key at the setup page. Sign in to the owning Microsoft account and install Office from Services & subscriptions. |
| INVALID_PRODUCT_KEY or ERR_INVALID_TOKEN | Check every character. Common confusions include B/8, G/6, O/0, Q/0, and VV/W. A Windows key from a PC sticker is not an Office key. |

Remove conflicting Office installations
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Search installed programs for office.
- Uninstall an unused or older Office version.
- Restart Windows.
- Open an Office 2019 application and check activation again.
Check Windows date and time
An incorrect clock or time zone can prevent activation. In Windows 10 or Windows 11, select the clock, open Date and time settings, enable Set time automatically and, where available, Set time zone automatically, then restart Office.
Try an elevated Office launch
Close all Office applications. Search for Word from the Start menu, right-click Word, select Run as administrator, choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt, and retry activation. This can help identify permission problems, but is not a permanent licensing fix.

Office 2019 support status
Microsoft support for Office 2019 ended on October 14, 2025. Activated applications may continue to run, but Microsoft no longer promises technical support, bug fixes, or security fixes for newly reported vulnerabilities. Activation of a valid existing license is separate from the end of support.
FAQ
Does Office 2019 require a Microsoft 365 subscription?
No. Retail Office 2019 is a non-subscription product. Redeem its key once, link it to a Microsoft account, install Office, and sign in with that account.
Where do I enter an Office 2019 product key?
Use Office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup for a new, unused retail key. After redemption, install Office from the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page.
Why does Microsoft say my Office 2019 key has already been used?
The key was probably redeemed previously and linked to a Microsoft account. Sign in to the account used for redemption and install Office from Services & subscriptions.
Can I use one retail Office 2019 license on two computers?
No. The listed retail editions are licensed for one computer at a time. A transfer may be allowed under the license terms; uninstall Office from the original computer and follow Microsoft’s transfer procedure for the replacement.
Can I activate Office Professional Plus 2019 at Office.com/setup?
Not if it is an organization’s volume edition. Volume Office uses MAK, KMS, or Active Directory-based activation and is managed by the organization’s administrator.
