In mainland China, Google Search and Yahoo Search are reported blocked; Bing’s HTTPS site, bing.com, was reachable in GreatFire’s latest cited test on September 27, 2026. Baidu is a domestic option. Which one works for you depends on the specific service address and network, and accessible search results may still be filtered.
Which search engines can you access in mainland China?
Mainland China’s network environment is not interchangeable with Hong Kong or Macao. The table summarizes the evidence for mainland China; reachability can vary by address, connection and time.
| Search engine | Reachability | Language and local coverage | Filtering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search | Reported blocked since 2012, according to the UK Home Office’s January 2026 country note. Source | Not stated in the cited sources. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Bing (bing.com over HTTPS) | GreatFire reported the HTTPS address was not blocked in its latest cited test, on September 27, 2026. This is a measurement of that address and protocol, not a guarantee for other Bing URLs or networks. Source | Not stated in the cited sources. | A 2023 comparative study found filtering by Bing; it does not establish the handling of every current query. Source |
| Baidu | A domestic search option; the cited sources do not provide a dated reachability test. | Not stated in the cited sources. Its status as a domestic option does not establish how it handles every language or query. | A 2023 comparative study found filtering by Baidu; it does not establish the handling of every current query. Source |
| Yahoo Search | Reported blocked since 2018, according to the UK Home Office’s January 2026 country note. Source | Not stated in the cited sources. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
“Not stated” means the cited evidence does not establish that comparison point; it is not a claim that the services are identical.
How to choose and try a search engine
- Identify your network location. These observations concern mainland China, not Hong Kong or Macao.
- Try the exact service address. If you want Bing, test https://www.bing.com/ on the network you are using. GreatFire’s dated result applies specifically to HTTPS bing.com, not every Bing endpoint.
- Consider the query and language. A service’s reachability does not show how useful its results will be for your language or local topic. The cited evidence does not provide a direct language-coverage comparison.
- Compare results when it matters. If a result is missing or differs between engines, that alone does not prove why. Filtering can affect results, and a comparative study is not a live audit of every query.
- Recheck if access changes. A measurement from one date and address cannot guarantee access on another network or day.
Why search results may be filtered
China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC) regulates internet information search services. Its 2016 provisions apply to services in China that collect and process online information for users to retrieve, and address prohibited material in search results, snippets, autocomplete and related functions. The CAC’s official explanation also describes restrictions involving links, summaries, snapshots, suggested terms, related searches and recommendations. These rules describe the regulatory framework, not the exact treatment of every query by every engine.

CAC regulation · CAC explanation
The CAC reported 3,633 approved internet news-information service entities as of March 31, 2026. That figure covers the news-information service category described by the regulator; it is not a count of search engines or search users. CAC licensing notice, April 28, 2026

What to keep in mind about access
- “Reachable” is not the same as guaranteed access: GreatFire’s finding is a dated measurement of HTTPS bing.com, while the Home Office provides a reported history for Google and Yahoo Search.
- A domestic service is not necessarily unfiltered. Citizen Lab’s 2023 comparison reported filtering by both Baidu and Bing, but its findings should not be treated as a live assessment of every search.
- Changing search engines does not itself remove network restrictions or filtering. The cited evidence does not establish a safe, universally effective workaround.
