Yes. The official way to play older Connections puzzles is the New York Times Connections Archive. It is available to readers with a Games or All Access subscription, and the archive reaches back to June 12, 2023. You can open it from the Games area on the web or from the Connections Archive section of the NYT Games app. The News app’s Play tab is not an archive location.

Sign in to the New York Times account you want to use before playing. Archived games can update your puzzle statistics, but they do not change your Current Streak or Max Streak. A puzzle that you have already completed in the official archive cannot be replayed.

What you need to access older Connections puzzles

The daily Connections game is free to play on supported platforms, but the complete historical archive is a subscriber feature. The New York Times Help Center says, “The new Connections archive allows All Access and Games Subscribers to play the full archive of Connections puzzles from as far back as June 12, 2023!”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That requirement matters because opening the regular daily game is not the same as opening the archive. If you can play today’s grid but cannot find older dates, first check whether the account is entitled to a Games or All Access subscription.

  • Subscription: Games or All Access access is required for the official archive.
  • Account: A New York Times account is needed to save archived progress and play history.
  • Coverage: The official archive goes back to June 12, 2023, according to the NYT Help Center.
  • Access points: Use the Games area on the NYT website or the Connections Archive section in the NYT Games app.
  • Excluded location: The archive is not available in the Play tab of the News app.

The subscription requirement does not mean that every way of playing a Connections puzzle is paid. It means that the NYT’s own collection of past puzzles is restricted to those subscriber accounts.

Open the official archive on the web

On a computer or mobile browser, use the New York Times Games navigation. The Help Center directs readers to the Games area at nytimes.com/crosswords. The exact appearance of the navigation can change, but the route is through Games rather than the general News section.

  1. Sign in first. Open the New York Times account that should receive your archived play history. If you use more than one NYT account, verify the email or profile before starting.
  2. Confirm subscription access. Make sure that the signed-in account has Games or All Access access. Without that entitlement, the full archive will not be available even if the daily puzzle opens normally.
  3. Open Games. Go to the Games area on the NYT website through the Games navigation or the crosswords page.
  4. Choose Connections Archive. Select the archive rather than the current day’s Connections board.
  5. Select a date. Pick a date that you have not completed. The archive list uses visual markers to show the state of each puzzle.
  6. Play normally. Select four words at a time and submit each group as you would in the daily game. Your result is recorded against the signed-in account.

The archive’s date list is designed to distinguish unfinished and completed games. An outlined gray box means the puzzle has not been started. Purple lines indicate a puzzle in progress. A filled purple star identifies a completed win, while an unfilled purple star identifies a completed puzzle for which no guesses remained.

Find older puzzles in the NYT Games app

If you prefer an app, use the NYT Games app, not the News app. The supported route is the app’s dedicated Connections Archive section.

  1. Open the NYT Games app.
  2. Sign in to the account associated with your Games or All Access subscription.
  3. Open the Connections area and choose Connections Archive.
  4. Browse the available dates and choose an entry that is not marked completed.
  5. Submit guesses from the puzzle screen and leave the game normally when you finish or run out of guesses.

The News app can contain a Play tab, but that tab is not the location of the Connections archive. Switching between the News app and Games app can therefore explain why one app shows the daily game while the other shows the historical list.

How to play a past puzzle without losing your place

Archived games use the same basic guessing loop as the daily puzzle, but the order in which you open dates affects what gets saved. The safest workflow is to sign in and choose the date before making any guesses.

Choose an uncompleted date

Use the archive markers as a checklist. An outlined gray box is the clearest indication that you have not started the puzzle. A purple-lines marker means you already began it, so opening that date lets you continue rather than creating a new attempt. A filled or unfilled purple star means the puzzle is finished and is no longer an eligible replay.

Submit groups as usual

Connections requires four words that share a category. Select a group and submit it. The archive does not provide a separate practice mode or a reset button for a completed official game. Treat each submission as part of the same recorded attempt.

Check the result before leaving

When the puzzle is complete, the archive records the outcome and updates the applicable statistics. If you stop partway through, the date remains in progress, represented by purple lines in the archive list. Returning later with the same account allows you to continue that archived attempt.

Which statistics archived games affect

Archived play is included in several account-level puzzle measures. It is not completely isolated from your regular Connections history.

Statistic Effect of an archived game
Puzzles Completed Archived games count toward the total.
Win Rate % Archived results count toward the percentage.
Perfect Puzzles Archived results count toward the total.
Mistake Distribution Archived guesses contribute to the distribution.
Current Streak Archived play does not change it.
Max Streak Archived play does not change it.

The New York Times states, “Playing Connections puzzles in the archive will not affect your streaks – both Current streaks and Max streaks.” Streaks are based on the puzzle played on its release day, so completing a historical date later cannot recreate or extend a daily streak.

This split explains why an archived win can raise your completed-puzzle count or win rate while leaving the streak numbers unchanged. If you are trying to protect a streak, an archive session will not alter either streak value; if you are tracking overall performance, it will be included in the other listed measures.

Can you replay a Connections puzzle you already finished?

Not through the official NYT archive. Once an archived puzzle is completed, it cannot be replayed. The archive’s filled purple star marks a completed win, and the unfilled purple star marks a completed game with no guesses remaining. Both indicate that the official attempt is finished.

This rule applies whether you solved the puzzle perfectly or used all available guesses. If you want to revisit the categories, you can open the completed entry to review its recorded state, but you should not expect a fresh board or a reset attempt from the official archive.

To avoid using up a puzzle before you are ready, open only a date you intend to play. If you leave an attempt partway through, its purple-lines status indicates that it remains in progress rather than completed.

Official archive versus an unofficial alternative

Independent sites also advertise collections of older Connections games. One example, Connectionsgame.org, advertises a free archive of past games as well as community games and custom-puzzle creation. Its page expressly says that it is not affiliated with The New York Times. That makes it a separate service, not another NYT access point.

Comparison point Official NYT Connections Archive Independent archive such as Connectionsgame.org
Legitimacy and support Provided and documented by The New York Times for Games and All Access subscribers. Independent and explicitly not affiliated with The New York Times.
Archive coverage Reaches back to June 12, 2023. The cited page advertises past games, but does not state a comparable start date.
Account-linked history and statistics Requires an NYT account to save archived progress and history; results feed the NYT statistics listed above. NYT account history and NYT statistics are not provided by the independent site.
Subscription cost Requires Games or All Access subscription access; a price is not established by the NYT archive information cited here. The site advertises a free archive.
Web and app convenience Available through NYT Games on the web and in the NYT Games app; not in the News app Play tab. Advertised as a web-based independent option; NYT app integration is not established.
Replay limitations A completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed. Replay behavior is controlled by the independent site, not by NYT archive rules.
Spoiler and accuracy risk Uses the official NYT puzzle archive and account state. Availability, puzzle accuracy, spoiler handling and account/statistics behavior are not guaranteed by NYT documentation.

Use the independent route only when you understand that it will not be the same as playing inside your NYT account. It may be useful for a puzzle collection, a community game or a custom puzzle, but it cannot provide the official archive’s subscription-linked history and statistics.

Troubleshooting the most common access problems

The archive option is missing

  • Check that you are signed in. The archive and saved history are tied to an NYT account.
  • Confirm that the signed-in account has Games or All Access access. A different account may have the subscription.
  • Use the Games area on the website or the NYT Games app. Do not look for the archive in the News app’s Play tab.
  • Open the Connections Archive itself instead of the current daily Connections page.

A date does not open a fresh puzzle

Look at its marker in the archive list. Purple lines mean the puzzle is already in progress. A filled or unfilled purple star means it is completed and cannot be replayed through the official archive. Choose an outlined gray entry if you want a puzzle that has not been started.

My streak did not change

That is expected for archived play. Current Streak and Max Streak are based on the puzzle played on its release day, and archived games do not affect either value. Review Puzzles Completed, Win Rate %, Perfect Puzzles or Mistake Distribution instead if you are checking whether the archived result was recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My archived progress is not visible

Return to the same NYT account used when you started the puzzle. Archived progress and history require an account, so switching accounts can make a date appear unstarted even when another account has activity associated with it.

Which route should you use?

Choose the official archive when account history matters

Use the NYT archive if you want your completed games, wins, perfect puzzles and mistake distribution attached to your NYT profile. It is also the only route in this guide with the documented archive start date of June 12, 2023 and the documented streak behavior.

Choose an independent site for community or custom play

An independent archive can be useful if you want a free collection, community games or custom-puzzle tools. Treat it as a separate game service: it does not inherit the NYT account record, NYT statistics or NYT support, and its coverage and spoiler behavior may differ.

Protect an unfinished official attempt

If you want to return later, stop before the puzzle is completed and use the same signed-in account next time. The purple-lines marker is the archive’s indication that the attempt remains in progress.

Quick checklist

  • Use a Games or All Access subscription for the official archive.
  • Sign in to the NYT account whose history you want to keep.
  • Open Games on the web or the Connections Archive in the NYT Games app.
  • Do not search for the archive in the News app Play tab.
  • Choose an outlined gray date for an unstarted puzzle.
  • Use the purple-lines marker to resume an in-progress game.
  • Remember that archived play changes several statistics but not Current Streak or Max Streak.
  • Do not expect to replay a completed official puzzle.

For the supported route, start at the NYT Games navigation and select Connections Archive. That gives you the documented historical collection, account-linked progress and the archive rules described above.
