Panther chameleons can change vivid skin colors by adjusting the spacing between tiny guanine crystals inside specialized skin cells. That spacing alters which wavelengths of light the skin reflects. Pigments also contribute to the final color, so the crystals are part of the mechanism—not the whole story.
How the crystal-based color change works
The best-studied example is the panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis), a species from Madagascar. In its skin, cells called iridophores contain tiny guanine nanocrystals arranged in a lattice. These crystals are beneath the skin surface; they are not loose particles moving across it.
When the spacing between crystals changes, the lattice reflects different wavelengths of light. This is structural color: color produced by the way light interacts with microscopic structures, rather than by pigment alone. In a resting state, the close-packed lattice selectively reflects blue wavelengths. As the spacing increases, the reflected wavelengths can shift toward yellow or orange. Pigments in other skin cells help determine the visible result—for example, yellow pigment combined with reflected blue light can appear green.
A 2015 Nature Communications study measured crystal spacing in sampled panther chameleon skin. On average, spacing was 30% smaller in resting blue or green skin than in excited yellow or white skin. The researchers also changed the osmolarity around skin samples and reproduced a corresponding optical shift outside the animal, supporting the proposed spacing mechanism. The reported crystal diameter was 127.4 ± 17.8 nanometers in the sampled superficial iridophores; this is a measurement from that study, not a universal value for every chameleon. When panther chameleons make rapid, vivid changes
The 2015 study observed especially vivid, rapid changes in mature males during social encounters with a male competitor or a potentially receptive female. Background skin could shift from green toward yellow or orange; blue patches could become whitish, and red areas could grow brighter. The changes were reversible and occurred within a couple of minutes in the reported observations. A University of Geneva account describes some vivid changes taking one to two minutes. This is not evidence that all chameleons constantly change color to blend into whatever background they encounter. The study focused on panther chameleons, and the rapid vivid shifts it described were particularly associated with adult males in social contexts. Its skin samples included five adult males, four adult females, and four juveniles; the superficial iridophore layer was fully developed in adult males and reduced in females and juveniles. Pigment dispersion can also alter brightness, including in females and juveniles.

Two iridophore layers have different roles
The study distinguished a superficial layer involved in visible color shifts from a deeper iridophore layer found across the examined sexes and ages. Their differences matter because the two layers do not appear to do the same job.

For the deeper layer, the study estimated that reflection screened roughly 45% of radiation energy in the near-infrared range it measured. That is a study-specific estimate, not a percentage that applies to all chameleons or conditions. The authors suggested that near-infrared reflectivity may help with thermal protection, while noting that more comparative work would be needed to establish how widespread this feature is across species. What remains unresolved
The experiments support the link between crystal-lattice spacing and reflected color, but they do not settle how the animal controls that spacing at the molecular and cellular level. The 2015 paper identified those control mechanisms as questions for further work. Nor does this panther-chameleon study establish that every chameleon species uses precisely the same detailed process.
