The Witcher 3 remains an open-world RPG benchmark because its map is built around consequences, not just distance. Towns, swamps, battlefields and city districts carry local conflicts, investigations and relationships that change when Geralt acts. Its best side quests are not disposable errands: they have premises, reversals, difficult choices and aftermaths that can reshape people and communities.
That combination explains why newer games are still judged against it. The standard is not simply a large map. It is the integration of geography, authored stories, player choice and meaningful resolution.
Why The Witcher 3 is still considered an open-world RPG standard
Many open-world games offer more territory, more collectibles or more simultaneous activities. The Witcher 3’s enduring advantage is that its strongest spaces communicate something about the people living there and give the player a reason to investigate. A village is not merely a fast-travel node; it can be the setting for a family dispute, a monster contract, a political pressure point and a decision whose result appears later.

CD PROJEKT RED described the game as taking place in “a rich, truly open world environment” and emphasized a nonlinear story. Its development material also said that the world changes through player actions, including local plotlines and side quests. That makes exploration narratively reactive: leaving the main road can reveal a problem that is specific to that place, and solving it can alter what that place becomes.

Scale helped the game attract attention, but scale alone does not explain its reputation. A 2012 CD PROJEKT S.A. strategy document described The Witcher 3’s world as 35 times larger than The Witcher 2’s. That is a company-published development claim, not a universal measurement of playable acreage. The useful conclusion is that the game attempted a much larger canvas while still treating local stories as authored content. The same document recorded more than 200 awards and accolades, an unusually strong reception signal for a role-playing game at that stage of development.
A contemporary review in TIME highlighted the size of the spaces but also the multi-step investigations and fully voiced philosophical interactions in both main and secondary encounters. That pairing is important: the map earns its size when a journey across it produces a chain of clues, conversations and consequences rather than a sequence of interchangeable icons.
How the open world makes exploration feel alive
Geography carries social information
The world’s regions are legible because their physical conditions and social problems reinforce each other. A swamp can shape how villagers travel and what they fear. A battlefield can leave behind displaced families, scavengers and unresolved loyalties. A city district can make class, crime and political authority visible through the people Geralt meets. These are not separate “lore” decorations; they are circumstances that determine what a quest can ask of the player.
When a location has a history and a current dispute, exploration becomes interpretation. You are not only asking where the next objective marker is. You are asking who benefits from a request, which version of an event is credible and what the local consequences of intervention might be.
Detours are connected to the central themes
The strongest optional stories echo the main narrative’s concerns about family, power, prejudice, responsibility and the cost of violence. A monster hunt can become an investigation into who created the danger or who is being blamed for it. A missing-person case can reveal that the original client has concealed a crucial fact. A local superstition can turn out to be a practical response to a real threat, a tool of social control or both.
Because these detours share the setting’s themes, they deepen the larger journey instead of merely delaying it. The player learns how ordinary people experience the political and supernatural forces that the main plot treats at a higher level.
The world changes after the player acts
Reactivity does not require every decision to create a radically different map. It can be a changed relationship, a different group occupying a location, a new conversation, a line of dialogue that reveals what people heard about Geralt, or a later mission that exists because of an earlier choice. CD PROJEKT RED’s own description of local plotlines and carefully designed side quests supports this narrower, more credible claim: actions can alter the stories and communities attached to the world.
Investigative play gives travel a purpose
Many quests ask the player to gather information before fighting. Dialogue, environmental clues, tracking and deduction make the player participate in the investigation rather than simply follow a waypoint. The journey through a region therefore has a rhythm: notice an unusual situation, question the people involved, test competing explanations, make a choice and live with the result.
What makes the side quests better than ordinary open-world activities
They begin with a clear human problem
A memorable quest usually starts with a concrete request: find someone, remove a threat, settle a dispute or determine what happened. The initial description is intentionally incomplete. As Geralt investigates, the apparent problem often changes shape, and the player must decide whether the client’s desired outcome is actually just.

They escalate instead of repeating the same task
The quest structure commonly moves from setup to discovery, complication and consequence. A contract may reveal that the “monster” is protecting something. A family dispute may expose competing accounts of the past. A search may become a choice between exposing the truth and preserving a fragile peace. This escalation gives a short story a beginning, middle and end rather than a loop of combat, loot and return.
Branching was planned early
Reporting on the game’s quest design described a process in which writers planned many possible paths and outcomes from the start. Designers noted that small changes could have far-reaching effects. That approach matters because a branch is more convincing when the surrounding dialogue, locations and later scenes were built to support it, rather than added as a last-minute alternate line.
The surrounding world was designed for the story
An interview with the studio described a production model in which story and quest work dictated the size of the world. In a conventional open-world pipeline, a large map may be built first and activities placed into available space. The reported Witcher 3 model reverses that order: the dramatic problems help determine where the player needs to go and what the environment must contain. It is a strong explanation for why many detours feel authored rather than procedurally scattered.
They provide aftermath
Resolution is not limited to a reward screen. A choice can change who is present, what a community believes, which character trusts Geralt or whether a later conversation is possible. Not every consequence is spectacular, and not every quest has a perfect ending. The value is that the story acknowledges the decision instead of treating it as an isolated transaction.
Why The Witcher 3’s choices stay in players’ memories
The game’s most effective moral decisions resist a quick good-versus-evil calculation. Both options can protect one person while harming another, preserve a community while concealing the truth, or solve an immediate danger while creating a later one. The player often lacks complete information, so the decision feels like judgment under uncertainty rather than selecting a known reward.
Story director Marcin Blacha described the intended experience this way:
“I always repeat that when you have a really big choice in The Witcher 3, it must be constructed in such a way that the player puts the controller away, stands up, and starts walking, thinking about the choice, and then goes back, and then the player picks one of the choices.”
The quotation identifies a design principle: a major choice should create reflection before selection. The open world strengthens that effect because consequences can belong to a family, a settlement or a relationship, not only to an end-state slide show. When the player later encounters the people affected, the decision becomes part of the world’s memory.
Are the side quests as important as the main story?
They are optional in the progression structure, but many are essential to understanding the setting’s themes and people. The main plot supplies the broad conflict and Geralt’s urgent objectives. Side quests show how that conflict reaches ordinary households, local authorities, soldiers, refugees and communities with no control over the larger war.

- EXPLORE A MORALLY AMBIGUOUS FANTASY OPEN WORLD: Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity. Traverse a fantastical open world: explore forgotten ruins, caves, and shipwrecks, trade with merchants and dwarven smiths in cities, and hunt across the open plains, mountains, and seas. Deal with treasonous generals, devious witches, and corrupt royalty to provide dark and dangerous services. Make choices that go beyond good & evil, and face their far-reaching consequences.
- TRACK DOWN THE CHILD OF PROPHECY: Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world. In times of war, chase down the child of prophecy, a living weapon foretold by ancient elven legends. Struggle against ferocious rulers, spirits of the wilds, and even a threat from beyond the veil – all hell-bent on controlling this world. Define your destiny in a world that may not be worth saving.
Skipping them can leave the world feeling flatter and can remove some of the game’s most carefully constructed choices. Playing every activity is not mandatory, however. The quality is uneven by design: some tasks are brief contracts or straightforward errands, while the best arcs offer the full combination of investigation, character conflict, branching outcomes and aftermath. The defensible comparison is that the top tier is unusually consistent and substantial, not that every activity is equally original.

A practical way to compare The Witcher 3 with newer open-world RPGs
Map size and activity counts are poor substitutes for design quality. Use the following questions when comparing another RPG with The Witcher 3’s benchmark.
| Evaluation axis | What to examine | What The Witcher 3 demonstrates at its best |
|---|---|---|
| Quest authorship | Are missions bespoke story arcs or repeated activity templates? | Distinct premises, escalation, character conflict and resolution. |
| Consequence visibility | Do choices change characters, settlements, dialogue or later missions? | Consequences can appear in relationships and local plotlines, sometimes after a delay. |
| World-to-quest integration | Does geography stage a story or merely host an icon? | Regions provide the social and physical conditions that make the problem specific. |
| Investigation quality | Does the player interpret clues and testimony? | Tracking, dialogue and deduction make the player participate in solving the case. |
| Content density | How many encounters are memorable per hour, not just how many acres exist? | Travel frequently leads to voiced, investigative or morally difficult encounters. |
| Resolution | Do side stories receive an ending and visible aftermath? | Many quests acknowledge the player’s decision through later people, places or scenes. |
This framework also explains why a newer game can improve on The Witcher 3 in combat, traversal or systemic simulation while still falling short of its narrative standard. The relevant comparison is the quality and integration of authored choices, not a race to produce the largest map.
Which edition includes both The Witcher 3 expansions?
The complete package is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition. The official product page identifies it as including the base game and both major expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The same page lists soundtrack vinyl merchandise as part of the broader product offering; that merchandise is separate from the playable expansion content.
Choose the Complete Edition if you want to play The Witcher 3 with both expansions without buying them separately. Store names, platform availability and current prices can vary by region and storefront, so check the listing for your platform before purchase.

The standard should not be mistaken for perfection. The game includes repeated activity patterns, and not every contract or map marker has the authored depth of its best side stories. Some systems and interfaces also reflect the period in which the game was made. Saying that it remains a quality benchmark does not mean every mechanic has aged equally well.
Its influence is best understood comparatively. Many open-world RPGs still struggle to combine bespoke writing, investigation, ambiguous choices, delayed consequences and meaningful endings at this level of consistency. That is a claim about the concentration of memorable work, not a claim that no other game has a stronger individual system.
The lasting lesson for open-world RPG design
The Witcher 3’s map is memorable because its spaces are consequences of story decisions as much as containers for content. Local conflicts give geography meaning; investigations make movement purposeful; branching design makes choices uncertain; and aftermath makes the player’s actions part of the world’s history.
That is why the game continues to set the RPG standard. Its achievement is not simply building a world 35 times larger than its predecessor or collecting more than 200 accolades. It is making a large world feel authored at human scale, where a detour can become a complete story and a decision can remain unresolved in the player’s mind long after the quest marker disappears.
