The concept used delayed auditory feedback—returning a speaker’s own voice after a short delay—to interfere with speech. The project author said the effect varied by person and habituation, was not ready for practical use, and would not be released or sold as a gun-type device.
What the SpeechJammer was
SpeechJammer was a 2012 research project by Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada. Their paper, “SpeechJammer: A System Utilizing Artificial Speech Disturbance with Delayed Auditory Feedback”, describes a system that returns a speaker’s own utterances after a delay. The authors summarize the principle this way: “In general, human speech is jammed by giving back to the speakers their own utterances at a delay of a few hundred milliseconds.”
The paper reports two prototypes that combined a direction-sensitive microphone and a direction-sensitive speaker, with the aim of disturbing a particular speaker’s speech. That description establishes the broad concept, not a parts list, circuit diagram, assembly procedure, tested operating range, or dependable way to reproduce the prototypes.
How delayed auditory feedback can disrupt speech
When someone speaks, they normally hear their voice as they produce it. Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) plays that voice back after a brief interval, so the speaker hears a delayed version of what they are saying. The SpeechJammer authors proposed that this interference can make speech harder to continue smoothly.

A contemporaneous WIRED report gave an approximate delay of 200 milliseconds for the historical prototype. That is a secondary report about that device, not a proven optimum, a universal setting, or a specification readers can use to build a reliable system. The paper’s abstract describes a delay of a few hundred milliseconds and says the work identified parameters for future formal study following a preliminary study.
Why this is not a practical construction guide
Kurihara’s SpeechJammer project page says the work was at an initial stage, the speech-inhibiting effect varied considerably between people and with habituation, and the approach was not ready for practical applications. The page also says there were no plans to release or sell the gun-type prototype.

- 🔫 [Zombies Killer Inspired Design] – Foam ray gun modeled after classic zombie game blasters; perfect for gamers and collectors.
- 📏 [16” Realistic Size] – Measures 16 inches for authentic look and easy handling at events, fairs, or conventions.
- 💪 [Lightweight & Safe] – Crafted from durable foam and plastic; weighs approx. 1 lb for comfortable cosplay use.
- 🎃 [Ideal for Multiple Occasions] – Great for Halloween costumes, Christmas gifts, fairs, shows, and gaming displays.
- ✨ [Detailed Sci-Fi Styling] – Features vivid coloring and molded details for realistic presentation without heavy metal or resin parts.
The available descriptions do not establish a general effectiveness rate, reliable range, long-term effects, or a delay that works consistently. They also do not provide enough detail to reproduce the directional prototypes. Treating the concept as a proven device—or turning the historical delay into a build specification—would go beyond what the authors reported.
What the researchers proposed it might be used for
The project page discusses presentation training and conversation turn-taking under agreed rules as possible applications. These are proposed uses, not demonstrated benefits or evidence that the device is suitable for ordinary meetings. The author’s account also makes clear that outcomes vary, which matters especially in situations where one person is trying to influence another person’s speech.

The consent and speech-freedom concern
Kurihara’s project page explicitly acknowledges that a third party could use the concept to deprive someone of freedom of expression. It notes that deciding which speech is unfair depends on the user’s ethics. The intended examples—self-training or settings where people agree to interaction rules—do not establish that using speech-disrupting feedback on an unwilling person is safe, fair, or acceptable. The concept is best understood in the context of voluntary experimentation, not as a way to silence someone.

The project page describes a free, simple application that can be tried with a Bluetooth headset with a microphone. It defines this as a small wireless-headphone device that includes a microphone. This is a limited software-use note, not a parts list for the directional prototype. The page does not establish a currently supported operating system, tested compatibility list, or recommended headset model, so check current software and device compatibility before relying on it.
