ASML’s extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems help chipmakers print the smallest, most demanding patterns used in advanced chip manufacturing. That makes ASML an important equipment link, not a stand-alone source of chips: production also depends on other lithography tools, materials, processes and suppliers. The EUV link is exposed to concentrated supply of critical optics, manufacturing capacity, export licensing and geographic risks. ASML’s 2025 annual report documents those exposures, but does not quantify the semiconductor industry’s overall dependence on ASML with an independent statistic.

What EUV lithography contributes to chipmaking

Lithography transfers patterns onto a silicon wafer. In an EUV system, extreme ultraviolet light is used to expose a light-sensitive coating through a patterned mask; subsequent processing turns that exposure into features in the chip’s layers. EUV lets manufacturers print particularly fine patterns needed for leading-edge chips. It is one part of a longer sequence of manufacturing steps, not a machine that makes a finished chip by itself.

ASML sells lithography systems as well as related software and services. EUV is part of a broader portfolio that includes deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography and metrology and inspection systems. Those technologies serve different patterning and measurement needs, and EUV does not replace every other tool in a fab. A chipmaker’s ability to manufacture wafers therefore depends on more than whether it has an EUV system.

What ASML’s 2025 figures show—and what they do not

ASML reported selling 48 EUV lithography systems in 2025, within 535 sales across its lithography, metrology and inspection systems. These are annual company-reported system-sales figures, not counts of all installed tools or proof that every system sold was installed, qualified and producing customer wafers by year end. See ASML’s 2025 Annual Report and 2025 Annual Report financials.

2025 company-reported measure Figure How to interpret it
EUV lithography systems sold 48 Annual system sales; not a count of installed or productive systems.
Lithography, metrology and inspection systems sold 535 Broader annual system-sales total across these categories.
ASML suppliers 5,100 Reported network size; it does not establish how quickly a critical supplier could be replaced.
Bill of materials sourced from its global supplier network Approximately 80% ASML’s reported share; it describes the scale of supplier participation, not the substitutability of each component.
Taiwan share of ASML total net sales 25.5% Sales by destination in 2025, not Taiwan’s share of global chip output.

The distinction between sales and productive capacity matters. ASML reported delivery to a customer of the first full-specification TWINSCAN EXE:5200B system. That is a delivery milestone; it does not establish that the system was already in volume production. Installation, qualification and integration into a customer’s process come after delivery.

Why a broad supplier network still has a critical bottleneck

ASML says approximately 80% of its bill of materials is sourced from a global supplier network and reported 5,100 suppliers in 2025. That breadth coexists with concentrated dependencies: having thousands of suppliers does not mean every specialized component has an interchangeable source.

Carl Zeiss SMT and critical optics

ASML identifies Carl Zeiss SMT as its sole supplier for several critical optical components, including lenses, mirrors, illuminators and collectors. Its annual-report risk disclosure says the number of lithography systems ASML can produce is limited by production capacity at Carl Zeiss SMT. This is a specific capacity constraint within a much larger network, rather than evidence that all components have only one source. The supplier and capacity disclosures appear in ASML’s 2025 Annual Report and its 2025 Form 20-F filed with the U.S. SEC.

Coordination across specialized suppliers

Advanced lithography equipment depends on many tightly integrated components, so a supplier network’s value is not just the number of companies in it. ASML’s strategy page attributes this statement to Wayne Allan, EVP and Chief Strategic Sourcing & Procurement Officer: “With approximately 80% of our bill of materials sourced from a global network of suppliers, close collaboration and joint innovation have always been at the heart of our strategy.” This is ASML’s description of its approach, not an independent assessment of supplier resilience. Technical progress does not erase capacity limits

ASML reported that the TWINSCAN NXE:3800E delivers 37% higher throughput than the preceding system in the comparison it made. The claim applies to that product comparison, not to all EUV systems or to semiconductor output overall. CFO Roger Dassen described the system as delivering greater productivity and enabling customers to achieve higher wafer capacity; that is the company’s account, not an independent customer assessment. The comparison and statement are in ASML’s 2025 Annual Report financials.

ASML also reported demonstrating a 1,000-watt EUV light source in April 2025. This is a technology milestone, not a direct wafer-throughput figure. Neither that demonstration nor a performance claim for one system establishes how quickly total tool production can grow: the company separately identifies supplier production capacity as a limit.

Export licenses and geography shape where systems can go

ASML says EUV systems require export licenses under Dutch, U.S. and other applicable laws. Licensing is a policy constraint distinct from the physical capacity to build a system: a tool can be technically manufacturable without its export to a particular destination being authorized. The general licensing requirement does not establish whether any specific transaction has been approved or denied. ASML discusses export controls and related risks in its 2025 Form 20-F.

Geographic exposure also matters to ASML’s business. Taiwan represented 25.5% of ASML’s total net sales in 2025, and the company identified cross-strait and related developments as a risk to serving customers there. The percentage measures ASML sales by destination; it is not a measure of Taiwan’s share of global chip production or a forecast of a disruption. ASML’s discussion is in its 2025 Annual Report.

How the dependencies fit together

ASML’s EUV systems connect advanced chip production to an equipment supply chain with both scale and concentration. The wide vendor network supports complex manufacturing, while dependence on specialized optics creates a documented production-capacity constraint. Export licensing and geographic risk affect where systems can be delivered and customers served; they are separate from the question of whether suppliers can physically make enough equipment. The cited figures establish these exposure points, but do not rank their effects or quantify how much semiconductor output would be lost if any one constraint tightened.
