If clubs finish level on points, the league applies a set order of tiebreakers, starting with goal difference. The 2026/27 season is scheduled to run from 21 August 2026 to 30 May 2027, but individual fixture dates can change.
How Premier League points and the season format work
The Premier League has 20 clubs. Each plays every other club twice—once at home and once away—making 38 matches per club and 380 league fixtures in the season. The Premier League’s season explainer describes the points system: three for a win, one for a draw and zero for a defeat. The club with the most points at the end of the season wins the title.
There is no fixed points total that guarantees a championship. The total a club needs depends on how its competitors do across their remaining matches.
What the table abbreviations mean
- P or Pl: matches played.
- W, D, L: wins, draws and losses.
- GF and GA: goals for and goals against. Some tables use F/A for the same figures.
- GD: goal difference—goals for minus goals against across the full league season.
- Pts: points.
For example, a club with 70 goals for and 30 against has a goal difference of +40. This is an arithmetic example, not a Premier League statistic. Season-wide goal difference is different from a comparison based only on matches between tied clubs.

Premier League tiebreakers, in order
If clubs finish level on points, the Premier League’s published order is:
- Goal difference: the difference between goals scored and goals conceded across the full league season.
- Total goals scored: the club with more goals for across the full season ranks higher.
- Points in matches between the tied clubs: compare the points each collected in their head-to-head league matches.
- Away goals in matches between the tied clubs: compare away goals scored in those head-to-head matches.
- Playoff, if necessary: if the tie remains and the placing affects the title, European qualification or relegation, a one-off playoff at a neutral venue may be used.
The first two criteria use the entire season; the final two use only matches between the tied clubs. Head-to-head results therefore do not automatically settle a tie: goal difference and total goals scored come first. The Premier League’s explanation says a playoff had not been needed to resolve a final-table tie as of its publication; that historical statement is time-bounded, not a permanent guarantee.

How to follow a live title race
To assess what contenders can still achieve, start with a current standings table and the remaining fixtures. For each club, record points earned, matches remaining and the opponents still to play. Work out possible finishing totals by adding the points available from those matches: three for each win, one for each draw and none for each defeat.
If two clubs could finish level, their final points totals alone will not settle the question. Apply the tiebreakers in order, using projected season goal difference and then goals scored before looking at their head-to-head points and away goals. Any live calculation depends on a dated standings snapshot and the latest fixture list, since both can change.

The Premier League’s official historical example is the 2011/12 title race: Manchester City and Manchester United finished level on points, and City took the title on goal difference after Sergio Agüero scored a late winner against Queens Park Rangers. The league’s article identifies this as the only title decided by goal difference through that article’s publication; it should not be read as a claim that remains true indefinitely.

The Premier League’s 2026/27 schedule announcement gives these scheduled dates:

The league lists 380 fixtures and makes them available through premierleague.com and its official app. Dates and kickoff times can move, including because of clubs’ progress in European competitions. The Premier League says it aims to give advance notice, but changes can occur at shorter notice. Check the latest official fixture list before making plans rather than relying on a static calendar.
