The Motion LS800 locates its battery-free pen with a hidden Wacom inductive digitizer and identifies a finger with a separate AuthenTec swipe reader. Neither sensor needs the user to press on the display: the pen can be detected while hovering, while the fingerprint reader senses the skin’s ridge pattern as a finger moves across it. Inside, those systems sit alongside a fanless Windows XP PC designed as a compact 8.4-inch slate.

How does the LS800 pen work without touching the screen?

The LS800 uses a Wacom inductive digitizer beneath the LCD, not a resistive or capacitive touch overlay. A matrix of planar coil traces scans for the pen. The tablet’s signals energize a resonant coil inside the passive stylus, and the digitizer detects the returning signal to determine the pen’s X-Y position. The pen needs no battery because the tablet supplies the energy inductively.

That sensing method also detects the stylus above the glass. A 2006 teardown of the LS800 reported that it could register the pen while it hovered almost a full centimeter from the screen. As Portelligent president David Carey explained, “The coil that exhibits the greatest level of induced voltage corresponds to the physical location of the stylus.” Embedded’s LS800 teardown describes the digitizer design.

How does the fingerprint reader identify a user?

The fingerprint reader is a distinct AuthenTec biometric subsystem, not part of the pen digitizer. Its swipe sensor uses a 192 × 16-pixel CMOS array. As a finger passes over the sensor, the array measures pixel-to-pixel capacitance changes associated with the ridges and valleys of the skin. The sensor captures the pattern; matching and authentication are handled elsewhere in the LS800.

Kircuit AC Adapter Replacement for Motion Computing TS01 LS800 Tablet PC Power Supply Cord Charger
  • 100% Brand New, High Quality AC Power Charger (non-OEM)
  • Input: 100V-240V AC; great for replacement or travel back up
  • Build in Dynamic IC, Charger IC & Power fuse for rapid charging and over charge protection.

The teardown does not establish how the LS800’s software stored or managed enrolled fingerprints, so the sensor’s physical operation should not be taken as evidence of modern biometric-security support. EDN’s 2006 teardown also identifies the LS800’s security hardware, including an Infineon SLD9630 trusted-compute-platform chip for keys, passwords and certificates.

What is inside the Motion LS800?

Motion’s archived 2006 specification describes the LS800 as a 2.2 lb carbon-fiber slate with an 8.4-inch, 800 × 600 SVGA screen and a 1.20 GHz Intel Pentium M ULV 753 processor. It shipped with 512 MB of DDR2 memory and a 1.8-inch hard drive in either 30 GB or 60 GB capacity. The operating system was Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Motion Computing’s archived LS800 specifications provide the original configuration details.

Digitizer and security boards

The digitizer controller board combines a Wacom ASIC for mixed-signal transmission and sensing with a Matsushita microcomputer for housekeeping and communications. The security subsystem adds the Infineon trusted-compute-platform chip. These functions are separate: the Wacom circuitry tracks the pen, while the AuthenTec sensor captures fingerprints.

Fanless cooling and other hardware

The LS800 has no fan. EDN describes a shared heatsink connecting the Pentium processor and graphics-memory controller hub to an internal shield plate, which spreads heat through the chassis. The design relies on power control and convection to cool the system. The teardown also counted nearly 1,500 RLC devices and about 40 connector components, and estimated hardware cost at under 40% of the $1,900 retail price at the time. Those are historical teardown figures, not present-day costs.

What were the LS800’s screen and battery options?

The standard display was an 8.4-inch 800 × 600 panel. Motion also offered a View Anywhere display configuration; it was optional, not a feature of every LS800. Independent reviews noted narrow viewing angles on the standard panel, so screen configuration matters when evaluating a used unit.

The archived specification lists a 29 Wh standard battery and an optional 57.7 Wh extended battery. Both are relevant to restoration because the LS800 was designed around removable batteries; the figures describe original capacity, not the runtime of a battery found on the used-parts market.

  • Stylus: Look for a compatible active pen for the LS800’s Wacom inductive digitizer. The original pen is battery-free, but a generic capacitive touchscreen stylus is not a substitute for an inductive digitizer pen.
  • Battery: Confirm that a replacement is specifically compatible with the LS800 and whether it is the standard or extended type. Capacity printed on an aged battery does not establish its present usable runtime.
  • Dock: Verify that a dock is for the LS series; the guide names the LS-series MobileDock and cautions against the LE-series FlexDock.
  • Display configuration: Check whether the unit has the standard or optional View Anywhere panel, and inspect the viewing angles and condition in person when possible.
  • Operating system: The original platform was Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. The available historical specifications do not establish current XP servicing or modern security support, so do not assume this is suitable for an internet-connected daily-use PC.

For a comparison with another vintage slate, the meaningful axes are pen technology, biometric hardware, weight and dimensions, display behavior, battery replaceability, storage type, cooling and accessory compatibility—not just processor speed.
