Short answer: The Midlands’ blueprint is a connected delivery system, not a single fund or organisation. Universities share research and industry links; specialist programmes translate discoveries, help form companies and connect them with investment.
That model is the argument advanced by Aston University’s Luke Southan and Matt Vassey in a Research Professional News article dated 30 September 2026. Public descriptions identify a regional stack that includes Midlands Innovation, SPARK The Midlands, Midlands Mindforge and the wider Forging Ahead collaboration. The initiatives have different jobs, and their reported scale figures should be treated as attributed claims rather than independently audited totals.
What “a blueprint” means in practice
Commercialising research is the process of turning a university discovery into something that can be adopted, licensed or built into a sustainable company. The difficult part is rarely the existence of a promising paper or prototype. It is the sequence of decisions between discovery and a market-ready product: proving that the technology works outside the laboratory, identifying a user, protecting intellectual property, recruiting people who can build a business and securing capital at each risk stage.
The Midlands model described in the available coverage addresses those gaps as a system. Translational support deals with technical and regulatory risk. Founder support helps convert an academic project into a company with accountable leadership. Investment and company-building support provide money and operating expertise. University and industry connections supply facilities, customers, specialist staff and routes to adoption.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is why the “blueprint” claim matters. A region can have excellent research and still produce few companies if each laboratory must find its own investors, advisers and industrial partners. A coordinated system makes those connections repeatable. It also lets smaller institutions use capabilities that would be too expensive to maintain alone.
The organisations and what each one does
The initiatives named in the coverage should not be collapsed into one consortium. They occupy different points in the pipeline and have different memberships or operating descriptions.
| Initiative | What is established | Place in the pipeline | What is not established in the available sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midlands Innovation | A partnership of eight universities: Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick. Its organisational page says it connects university research with the strengths of Midlands industry. | Regional coordination, shared research capability and links to industry. | Specific eligibility rules, funding amounts, selection processes and measured commercial outcomes. |
| SPARK The Midlands | A pre-clinical accelerator anchored in Birmingham and led by Aston University. | Translation of early biomedical or life-science work before clinical development, including the practical work needed to make a project investable. | Publicly available summaries do not specify cohort size, award amounts, acceptance criteria, success rates or evaluation results. |
| Midlands Mindforge | Described as providing investment and company-building support for university spinouts. | Founder formation, venture creation and capital after a university project has a credible commercial path. | The reviewed descriptions do not state ticket sizes, ownership terms, selection rules, portfolio performance or sector limits. |
| Forging Ahead | A collaboration described by a Climb Group 2026 event page as involving 16 universities. | Wider ecosystem coordination across institutions, investors, founders and industry. | The event page does not expose the underlying dataset, definitions or valuation method for its headline ecosystem figures. |
The distinction between Midlands Innovation and Forging Ahead is especially important. The former names eight specific partner universities; the latter is described as a broader 16-university collaboration. They may reinforce one another, but they are not interchangeable names for one organisation.

Why SPARK and Mindforge are complementary
A pre-clinical accelerator and a spinout investor solve different problems. A laboratory project may need experiments, validation, regulatory planning and a route to a first use before a conventional investor will engage. Once that evidence exists, the main challenge may become recruiting a chief executive, incorporating a company, setting a financing plan and building a sales pipeline. Treating those stages as separate but connected prevents a promising project from being forced prematurely into a venture-capital process, while also giving validated projects a route beyond grant funding.
How the regional pipeline works
The following sequence is a useful way to understand the blueprint. It is an analytical model based on the roles publicly attributed to the initiatives, not a published operating manual with guaranteed hand-offs.
- Identify a problem worth solving. Researchers and industry partners define a practical need rather than starting with a technology in search of a customer. Midlands Innovation’s stated connection between university research and Midlands industry is relevant at this stage.
- Assess the discovery. Technology-transfer specialists examine evidence, intellectual-property position, competing approaches and the likely user. Many ideas should be licensed, published or developed through an existing company rather than spun out.
- Translate the science. Technical, pre-clinical, manufacturing or regulatory work reduces the risks that prevent an external partner from acting. A programme such as SPARK The Midlands is positioned in this part of the journey.
- Choose the commercial vehicle. The team decides whether the best route is licensing, a joint project, a new company or another partnership. The choice should follow the evidence and customer need, not a target number of spinouts.
- Build the founding team. Academic expertise alone is rarely enough to run a company. Founder support adds commercial leadership, governance, finance, hiring and a plan for protecting and deploying the intellectual property.
- Finance the next risk-reducing milestone. Capital should be tied to a defined technical, regulatory or customer milestone. Midlands Mindforge is described as combining investment with company-building support, which addresses both cash and execution capacity.
- Connect to adopters and later investors. Industrial partners, hospitals, public-sector buyers and specialist investors can provide pilots, data, procurement routes and follow-on capital. A regional network is valuable when it produces these concrete introductions rather than merely hosting events.
- Recycle experience into the ecosystem. Successful founders, technical staff and investors can mentor new teams, while universities can use evidence from prior projects to improve assessment and support. This feedback loop is what turns isolated successes into a repeatable regional capability.
Why a regional approach can outperform isolated efforts
It pools specialised capabilities
One university may have exceptional biomedical science, another advanced manufacturing, another clinical access or data expertise. A connected network lets a project reach the right capability without requiring every institution to duplicate every facility and adviser.

It gives industry a clearer entry point
Companies often struggle to navigate several technology-transfer offices, laboratories and procurement processes. A recognisable regional interface can make it easier to describe a problem once and find the relevant academic and translational partners.

It makes investment more informed
Investors can see a larger and more varied pipeline when projects are surfaced through multiple universities. That does not remove investment risk, but it can improve the quality of information available before a financing decision.
It supports founders beyond the first cheque
Company creation requires hiring, governance, customer discovery, regulatory work and later fundraising. Combining capital with company-building support acknowledges that money without operating help often leaves academic founders carrying responsibilities they have never performed before.

It also creates coordination risks
More partners can mean slower decisions, overlapping services and uncertainty about who owns a project at each stage. A blueprint is credible only if applicants can understand where to apply, what evidence is expected, who makes the decision and what happens after acceptance. The public descriptions reviewed here do not provide those operational details.
What the published scale figures actually show
| Figure | Publisher and date | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 230 active spinouts | Climb Group, 2026 event listing for Forging Ahead | An event-page claim. The listing does not identify the source dataset, define “active” or explain whether all institutions use the same counting rules. |
| More than £31 billion ecosystem value | Climb Group, 2026 event listing for Forging Ahead | An event-page claim. The calculation method, valuation date, included companies and treatment of unrealised value are not stated. |
| 16 universities | Climb Group, 2026 event listing | The number of universities described as participating in Forging Ahead; it is not the membership count of Midlands Innovation. |
| Eight universities | Midlands Innovation organisational page, accessed 2026 | The listed membership of Midlands Innovation: Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick. |
These figures are useful indicators of ambition and reach, but they are not directly comparable measures. A spinout count, a membership count and an ecosystem valuation answer different questions. Until definitions and methods are published, they should not be presented as an audited regional balance sheet or as proof that one programme caused a particular economic result.

Researchers and academic inventors
- Start by describing the user, unmet need and evidence required for adoption, not only the novelty of the science.
- Ask early whether licensing, collaboration or a spinout is the appropriate route.
- Map the next value-creating milestone and the expertise needed to reach it.
- Expect commercial leadership, intellectual-property planning and regulatory work to be distinct tasks that may require different people.
Universities and technology-transfer teams
- Create a visible path from disclosure to translation, founder formation and investment.
- Use shared regional capabilities where they are stronger than an institution’s internal provision.
- Publish clear decision points, contact routes and evidence requirements even when programmes remain selective.
- Track outcomes consistently so that future claims about spinouts, survival and value can be independently understood.
Investors and company builders
- Assess the quality of technical and customer evidence separately from the founders’ academic credentials.
- Look for a defined milestone plan, realistic regulatory assumptions and a credible route to follow-on capital.
- Use the breadth of the regional network to find specialist advisers and commercial partners, while retaining independent diligence.
Industry and public funders
- State the problems, data access and adoption conditions that would make a collaboration useful.
- Fund the translation steps that private capital is not yet willing to bear, rather than assuming every project is venture-backable.
- Judge the ecosystem by time to meaningful milestones, industrial adoption and durable companies, not by incorporation totals alone.
How to tell whether the blueprint is working
The available descriptions do not report programme success rates or evaluation results. A serious assessment would therefore need a transparent scorecard, agreed across participating institutions.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Pipeline quality: how many projects have a defined customer problem, defensible intellectual property and evidence plans?
- Translation progress: how quickly do supported projects reach technical, pre-clinical, regulatory or customer milestones?
- Founder formation: how many teams recruit experienced commercial leadership and establish appropriate governance?
- Capital efficiency: what milestone is achieved per pound of public, philanthropic or private funding?
- Industry adoption: how many projects secure pilots, licences, procurement contracts or strategic partnerships?
- Company durability: how many spinouts remain active, raise follow-on finance, generate revenue or deliver measurable public benefit?
- Regional additionality: which outcomes happened because institutions collaborated, rather than because a project would have progressed anyway?
Publishing definitions alongside these measures would make regional comparisons more meaningful and would prevent a large headline valuation from obscuring weak conversion between stages.
What remains unresolved
The public material establishes the existence and broad roles of the named initiatives, but it does not establish their eligibility rules, funding terms, selection processes, portfolio outcomes or independent evaluations. It also does not show how projects move between programmes, whether every university has equal access, or how the reported ecosystem totals were calculated.
That uncertainty does not invalidate the blueprint. It sets the boundary for what can responsibly be claimed today: the Midlands has assembled recognisable pieces of a research-to-market system, and the pieces are designed to address different bottlenecks. Demonstrating that the system consistently produces better commercial and societal outcomes will require published methods and longitudinal results.
The practical verdict
The Midlands’ strongest idea is organisational rather than technological: make translation, founding, investment and industry access part of one regional pathway. Midlands Innovation supplies a university-and-industry network; SPARK The Midlands represents specialist pre-clinical acceleration; Midlands Mindforge represents investment and company building; and Forging Ahead is described as a wider multi-university collaboration. Keeping those roles distinct makes the model easier to use and easier to evaluate.
For other regions, the lesson is not to copy the names or announce a spinout target. Build the missing hand-offs, publish who can access each service, fund the evidence needed at every risk stage and measure what reaches users. That is the difference between an aspiration to commercialise research and infrastructure capable of doing it repeatedly.
