The IEM Cologne 2027 playoff is an eight-team, single-elimination championship bracket: four quarterfinal winners advance to two semifinals, and the semifinal winners meet in a best-of-five grand final. The two semifinal losers play a separate best-of-three third-place decider; that match decides third and fourth place, not the champion. This format and the August 12–15 schedule are announced for the 2027 event, not the 2026 Cologne Major.
How the eight-team bracket is structured
Four quarterfinals reduce the field from eight teams to four. Those four play in two semifinals; the winners reach the grand final. A loss in a quarterfinal or semifinal ends a team’s chance to win the title.

The third-place decider gives the semifinal losers one more match. It does not put either team back into the championship route. ESL lists it before the grand final.

In a Bo3, a team must win two maps to take the series; in a Bo5, it must win three. The longer final gives the finalists more maps in which to decide the title.

How teams qualify—and what is known about the draw
The eight playoff places go to the top four finishers in each of the two Stage 2 groups, which have eight teams apiece. ESL says seeding will use the first available monthly Valve Regional Standings (VRS) publication in July 2027. The event page does not yet specify how those seeds or group positions map to quarterfinal opponents, so exact pairings should not be treated as confirmed until ESL publishes them.
When and where the 2027 playoffs take place
The announced venue is LANXESS Arena in Cologne. ESL’s schedule places the quarterfinals on August 12 and 13, the semifinals on August 14, and both the third-place decider and grand final on August 15, 2027. The playoffs span four days, with the additional quarterfinal matches scheduled in front of the arena crowd. Event times may change.

How this differs from the 2026 Cologne Major
The year matters: IEM Cologne 2027 is an ESL Pro Tour Championship event, while the 2026 edition was the Cologne Major. ESL’s 2026 Major announcement also described an eight-team single-elimination playoff with Bo3 quarterfinals and semifinals and a Bo5 grand final, but its announced playoff schedule did not include a third-place decider. The 2027 event page explicitly includes that match and schedules the playoffs over four days.
