Dear Van Gogh is an interactive experience inside Sky: Children of the Light, where players can explore 3D environments inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. Thatgamecompany combines painterly landscapes, movement, cooperative play and a story centered on Vincent’s letters to his brother Theo and the support of Theo’s wife, Johanna.
What is Dear Van Gogh in Sky?
Dear Van Gogh is an experience within Sky: Children of the Light, not a separately identified standalone game. Thatgamecompany announced it on June 6, 2026, and said it became available on July 17, 2026. The studio lists iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam for its launch release. Check the official Dear Van Gogh page for current details, since availability in a live game can change.
How do you make a painting playable?
The studio’s approach is to translate selected paintings into 3D spaces that players can move through. Rather than treating a canvas only as an image to look at, Dear Van Gogh presents painterly landscapes as places to explore, using expressive, swirling brushstrokes to evoke the paintings’ visual character.
The official experience page illustrates works including Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night, Wheatfield and The Bedroom. It does not provide a complete list of paintings or a scene-by-scene account of their adaptation, so those examples should not be taken as an exhaustive inventory.

From a fixed composition to a navigable space
In an interview with GamesBeat published June 6, 2026, thatgamecompany CEO and creative director Jenova Chen described the ambition as making it possible to navigate inside a painting, “like playing a game.” That explains the creative goal, not the engineering behind it: the interview does not specify the modeling, rendering tools or production pipeline used.
The adaptation therefore changes how a viewer encounters a painting: a flat composition becomes an environment, and the player’s movement provides a way to experience it. The game is inspired by the works’ appearance; the available studio descriptions do not establish that it reproduces every source painting exactly.

How does Sky let players paint together?
Exploration is paired with cooperative interaction. The official description says players can use Sky’s brushstroke mechanic together to bring color and light back into the world. The studio frames this as a shared act of restoring the environment, not simply as a solo tour through a painted landscape.
The published description does not detail the mechanic’s rules, how many players take part in a particular space, or whether visual changes persist. Those specifics should not be inferred from the broad description of collaborative play.

Why are Vincent, Theo and Johanna part of the experience?
Thatgamecompany says correspondence between Vincent and his brother Theo is at the heart of the experience. The studio describes their exchange as spanning decades and brings in Theo’s wife, Johanna, as a guide to the family story and Vincent’s legacy. This makes the narrative about relationships and support as well as the paintings.
In its July 17, 2026 launch release, Chen said the story is often framed as that of a solitary genius, but argued that Vincent’s recognition depended on people who loved and believed in him. The studio’s June announcement also presented the emotional premise this way: “Some stories are so universal that they must be experienced, not just observed, and Van Gogh’s is one of them.” These are the studio’s stated narrative intentions; they are not, by themselves, an independent historical assessment.

What is known—and not known—about the adaptation?
The official descriptions establish the broad design: painterly 3D environments, movement through them, cooperative brushstroke interaction and a story drawing on family correspondence. They do not establish a complete catalogue of represented paintings, the exact technical workflow, or the detailed rules for collaborative painting. The distinction matters: the experience’s stated goal is clear, but a more specific account of how its visuals were built would require production details the published sources do not provide.
