Thallium isotopes can reveal whether the ancient seafloor became more oxygenated or more anoxic, but they do not provide a direct dissolved-oxygen measurement. The proxy records an integrated redox signal: oxygen controls how widely manganese oxides form and are buried, and that burial changes the thallium isotope composition of seawater. Authigenic minerals preserved in sediments can retain the resulting signal, allowing researchers to reconstruct broad changes in ocean oxygenation over thousands to millions of years.
What thallium can—and cannot—tell us about ancient oxygen
Ancient seawater no longer exists to be sampled directly, and most rocks do not preserve a simple number for the oxygen concentration that once surrounded them. Thallium (Tl) isotopes offer a different kind of evidence. They track how the global thallium budget responded to oxygen-sensitive manganese cycling, so a sedimentary thallium record can indicate whether oxygen-poor seafloor expanded or oxygenated seafloor became more extensive.
The result is a reconstruction of integrated ocean redox state, not a local oxygen meter. A positive or negative shift in ε205Tl reflects a change in the balance of thallium entering seawater and being removed, especially through manganese-oxide burial. Converting that shift into an oxygenation history requires assumptions about the manganese cycle, the global thallium budget and the way the sediment was preserved.

Researchers therefore use thallium alongside independent indicators such as uranium or molybdenum behavior, iron mineral speciation and sulfur isotopes. The strongest claims about global oxygenation come from geographically separated sections that show the same pattern, rather than from one core or outcrop.

How the thallium isotope proxy works
Two stable isotopes and the ε205Tl scale
Natural thallium has two stable isotopes, 203Tl and 205Tl. Laboratories report their ratio as ε205Tl, a small deviation from the NIST 997 reference standard expressed in parts per 10,000. This notation makes subtle differences between seawater, minerals and sediment layers measurable and comparable.
Modern seawater is described as remarkably uniform at approximately −6.0 ± 0.3 ε205Tl (2 standard deviations). Qian, Wang, Costa and Nielsen reported that value in 2026. The same study estimates a modern seawater thallium residence time of roughly 18,000–20,000 years, compared with an ocean-mixing time of about 1,500 years. Because thallium remains in the ocean for many mixing cycles, seawater can integrate signals from a large fraction of the ocean before the element is removed.
Why manganese links thallium to oxygen
On an oxygenated seafloor, manganese is oxidized and manganese-oxide minerals can form and be buried across broad areas. Those minerals preferentially affect the thallium flux between seawater, particles and sediments. If low-oxygen or anoxic conditions spread, manganese-oxide formation and burial can contract. The altered sink changes the isotope composition that remains in seawater.

That sign is a model-based interpretation of the mass balance, not a universal rule that can be read without context. A positive excursion means that the balance of thallium sources and sinks shifted in a way consistent with reduced manganese-oxide burial and greater anoxia, provided the sedimentary setting and other redox evidence support that explanation.
Why a sediment can preserve a seawater signal
Scientists target authigenic thallium—the fraction incorporated into minerals while the sediment is forming or early in burial—rather than assuming that every thallium atom in a rock represents seawater. Pyrite-bearing material is commonly analyzed because it can capture elements from pore waters and the overlying water column. The measured ε205Tl is compared with expected seawater inputs and with independent redox indicators.

This archive is selective. Local oxygen conditions, sedimentation rate, mineral availability, later fluid movement and diagenesis can all modify the original signal. A sample can therefore record a local depositional process rather than the global ocean. The longer residence time of seawater helps global integration, but it does not eliminate local overprinting during mineral formation.
How scientists reconstruct oxygenation from a rock record
- Select a time-resolved section. Researchers collect successive beds, drill-core intervals or mineral separates across the event of interest. Stratigraphic control is essential because the goal is to identify the timing and duration of isotope changes.
- Identify the authigenic fraction. Petrography and geochemical screening distinguish minerals formed from seawater or pore water from detrital grains that merely weathered in from land. Pyrite-bearing layers are often useful, but the mineral host and depositional environment must be documented.
- Measure ε205Tl. Purified thallium is analyzed against the NIST 997 standard. Replicates, standards and procedural blanks test whether the small isotope differences are larger than analytical uncertainty.
- Establish the baseline. Values are compared with the modern seawater reference only as a framework; ancient input compositions may not have been identical. Researchers also compare the record with estimated continental inputs and with neighboring beds that appear less altered.
- Model the source-and-sink balance. A more positive excursion is evaluated as a possible reduction in manganese-oxide burial and expansion of anoxia. The model must account for other potential thallium sinks and for changes in weathering or volcanic inputs.
- Test the interpretation independently. Iron-speciation data, uranium and molybdenum concentrations or isotopes, sulfur behavior, sedimentary facies and organic-matter evidence can reveal whether the thallium shift reflects broad oxygen loss, a restricted basin or post-depositional alteration.
- Compare distant sites. Agreement among sections from different ocean basins is critical for a global claim. A single positive value may be local; a coherent excursion in widely separated settings is much harder to explain as a purely local artifact.
What a positive ε205Tl excursion means
In a well-supported record, a positive excursion indicates that the seawater thallium balance moved toward the composition expected when manganese-oxide burial diminished. The geological interpretation is usually an expansion of oxygen-poor or anoxic seafloor. It does not specify an oxygen concentration in micromoles per liter, identify the exact depth of an oxycline or prove that every basin was anoxic at the same time.
The size and duration of the excursion matter. A brief shift can indicate a transient change in the global sink, while a sustained plateau may indicate prolonged alteration of seafloor redox conditions. Researchers also inspect the direction of change before and after an event: a gradual trend can imply progressive deoxygenation, whereas an abrupt reversal may indicate rapid ventilation or a change in the dominant thallium sink.
Because the signal is integrated over the thallium residence time, a layer does not necessarily represent conditions on the exact day or even the exact century when it formed. The approximately 18–20-kyr residence estimate is long relative to ocean mixing, so short-lived local events can be smoothed in a global seawater signal.
What thallium records show in major ancient events
End-Permian mass extinction
A Nature Geoscience study analyzed three widely distributed Panthalassa sites across the end-Permian extinction interval. Its thallium record identified transient ocean oxygenation at the onset of the extinction interval. Within that study’s framework, more positive ε205Tl values correspond to greater anoxia, so the pattern was interpreted through changes in the extent of oxygen-poor seafloor rather than as a direct oxygen concentration curve.

The significance is methodological as much as historical: geographically separated sites allowed the authors to test whether the isotope behavior extended beyond one restricted basin. Even so, the interpretation depends on matching the thallium pattern to sedimentological and redox evidence from each site.
Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, about 183 million years ago
The Toarcian event is often presented as a discrete interval of widespread anoxia, but thallium records from two ocean basins indicate a more extended sequence. The published reconstruction found a stepwise decline in global bottom-water oxygen that began before and continued beyond the classically defined event interval.
In that interpretation, the early decline was associated with large-scale volcanism, while the later isotope shift overlapped the traditional anoxic-event interval. Thallium therefore helped separate the onset of deoxygenation from the narrower interval used to define the event in some stratigraphic schemes.
Tonian–Cryogenian Neoproterozoic oceans
A 2025 Geology study examined Tonian and Cryogenian sections and reported that 13 of 16 Cryogenian samples had ε205Tl values close to global-ocean input values. The authors interpreted that pattern as evidence that the deep ocean was not broadly ventilated during the sampled Cryogenian interval.
“Not broadly ventilated” is more precise than saying the entire ocean was oxygen-free. The result allows for oxygenated surface waters, localized ventilation or regional redox differences while arguing against widespread, sustained oxygenation of the deep ocean.

Ediacaran Shuram excursion
During the Ediacaran Shuram excursion, authigenic thallium values near upper-continental-crust composition were interpreted, by comparison with modern settings and alongside muted redox-sensitive-element signals, as consistent with widespread bottom-water anoxia. The conclusion is inferential: the thallium composition gains meaning from its relationship to other elements and to the depositional setting, not from the number alone.
How thallium compares with other redox proxies
No single proxy samples every part of the ocean or responds to every oxygen-sensitive process. The following comparison describes what each approach is generally used to constrain and where its signal is most vulnerable.
| Proxy | Geographic integration | Main redox sensitivity | Typical information | Key cautions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thallium isotopes | Potentially broad because seawater residence is longer than mixing time | Manganese-oxide formation and burial | Integrated changes in seafloor oxygenation and deep-ocean redox state | Mass-balance assumptions, mineral selectivity, local depositional effects and diagenesis |
| Uranium | Can integrate large areas but is strongly influenced by sedimentary setting | Reduction and removal under low-oxygen conditions | Extent and intensity of reducing environments | Detrital contamination, local restriction and changing uranium delivery |
| Molybdenum | Often sensitive to basin connectivity and local sulfide chemistry | Sulfide formation and organic-matter-rich burial | Potential euxinia and the availability of sulfide | Restricted basins can dominate the signal; not all anoxia is euxinic |
| Iron speciation | Primarily local to the sedimentary section | Transformation and preservation of iron minerals | Bottom-water oxygenation and whether conditions were ferruginous or euxinic | Requires careful mineral extraction and can be altered during burial |
| Sulfur isotopes | Can reflect broad sulfur-cycle changes or local pyrite formation | Sulfate reduction and sulfide burial | Sulfur cycling, euxinia and atmospheric–oceanic coupling | Source mixing and local sulfate reduction complicate global interpretation |
| Carbon isotopes | Often broad when tied to the global carbon reservoir | Changes in carbon burial and oxidation | Carbon-cycle perturbations that may accompany, but do not uniquely indicate, anoxia | Not an oxygen proxy by itself; multiple carbon sources can produce similar shifts |
Thallium is most useful when it supplies information that the other records do not. For example, a manganese-linked signal can reveal a change in seafloor oxygenation even when molybdenum does not indicate widespread euxinia. Conversely, a local iron or sulfur record may identify conditions in a particular basin that a globally integrated thallium signal smooths out.
Limits, failure modes and how researchers avoid them
Mistaking an indirect signal for an oxygen measurement
The central limitation is conceptual: ε205Tl is not dissolved O2. It is a tracer of the processes that connect oxygen to manganese burial. Any article or figure that labels a thallium curve as an oxygen concentration without qualification is overstating what the proxy can do.
Reading a local basin as the whole ocean
Restricted shelves, isolated basins and rapidly changing sedimentary environments can create local thallium signals. Global claims should be based on sections from different paleogeographic settings and should agree with independent redox indicators.

Ignoring diagenesis and mineral selectivity
Fluid movement after deposition can replace or redistribute thallium. Different minerals can also capture different parts of the seawater–pore-water system. Screening for alteration, analyzing appropriate authigenic phases and comparing coexisting minerals help distinguish primary signals from burial overprints.
Assuming the modern thallium budget applied unchanged in deep time
The modern value of −6.0 ± 0.3 ε205Tl and the 18–20-kyr residence estimate are reference conditions measured or modeled for the modern ocean. Ancient weathering, volcanism, continental area, ocean circulation and the availability of manganese could have changed thallium inputs and sinks. Those differences must be included in any quantitative interpretation.
Overinterpreting timing
A residence time longer than ocean mixing means that the seawater signal is globally averaged and temporally smoothed. A thallium excursion can establish that the ocean redox balance changed across a stratigraphic interval, but it may not resolve a brief pulse at annual or centennial scale.

- Does the study identify the mineral phase that hosts authigenic thallium?
- Are ε205Tl values reported relative to the NIST 997 standard with analytical uncertainty?
- Is the direction of the excursion interpreted through an explicit manganese and thallium mass balance?
- Are detrital input, alteration and diagenesis tested rather than assumed away?
- Do independent proxies support the proposed oxygenation or anoxia?
- Do multiple sites show a comparable pattern, or is the result limited to one basin?
- Does the wording distinguish deep-ocean ventilation, seafloor anoxia, euxinia and local bottom-water conditions?
If the answer to several of these questions is no, the record may still be valuable, but it should be treated as a local or qualitative redox indicator rather than a global oxygen history.
Bottom line
Thallium isotopes provide a powerful, globally integrating clue to ancient ocean oxygenation because oxygen availability influences manganese-oxide burial and therefore the seawater thallium budget. A positive ε205Tl excursion is commonly interpreted as evidence for expanded anoxia in the appropriate mass-balance framework. The proxy cannot give a direct oxygen concentration, and its conclusions are strongest when authigenic minerals, stratigraphy, geographically separated sites and independent redox proxies all point to the same history.
