And the advertised $1,000 in free credits is not a universal signup benefit: Temporal’s general signup pages showed $150, while the $1,000 offers were tied to particular AWS, event, or startup paths. Eligibility and live terms can change, so check the offer that matches your account before signing up.
How Temporal Cloud remembers where a workflow left off
Temporal describes its platform as a runtime for durable function executions called Workflow Executions. The Temporal Service tracks an execution and persists its history. If a failure interrupts it, that recorded history lets the workflow resume from its last recorded event rather than starting the entire process over. Temporal calls this “Durable Execution”: a Workflow Execution maintains its state and progress despite failures, crashes, or server outages. Temporal Platform Documentation and What is Temporal?
Temporal Cloud is the hosted, SaaS version of the Temporal Service. You still run Worker Processes, which execute your application code using Temporal SDKs. With self-hosting, you operate the Temporal Service yourself instead. Cloud manages the service side; it does not run every part of your application for you.
What happens when a process fails
Temporal records workflow events as the execution advances. When a worker or infrastructure failure interrupts work, the service can use that event history to restore workflow state and continue execution. The recovery model applies to Temporal Workflow Executions—not indiscriminately to arbitrary application code or outside systems.

Why workflow code still needs care
Workflow definitions need to be deterministic so Temporal can replay them against recorded history. Unreliable or non-deterministic operations—such as calling an external API—belong in Activities, where they can be handled separately. That separation is part of the programming model, not a guarantee that an external service will succeed or that every side effect can safely be repeated. Temporal’s training material explains the distinction.
Who gets $1,000 in Temporal Cloud credits?
It depends on the signup route. Temporal’s general free-start and Cloud signup pages showed $150 in credits, not $1,000. The higher figure appeared in specific AWS-related promotions and should not be treated as an automatic benefit for every new account. The pages are live offers, so confirm the current amount, eligibility, and expiration terms before relying on them.

What to check before choosing Cloud or self-hosting
Cloud and self-hosting differ mainly in who operates the Temporal Service and its underlying infrastructure. With Cloud, Temporal hosts the service; your team still runs workers and application code. With self-hosting, your team also takes responsibility for operating and upgrading the Temporal Service and database.
- Operational ownership: Decide whether your team wants to manage the service and database or use Temporal’s hosted service.
- Worker placement: Plan where your Worker Processes and application code will run; Cloud does not remove that responsibility.
- Workload shape: Estimate workflow starts, activity starts and retries, signals, timers, child workflows, and search-attribute updates. These are examples of billable Actions in Temporal’s cost guide. Temporal Cloud cost guide
- Storage: Account for both open workflow histories and retained histories for closed workflows. Temporal’s cost guide says active storage is more expensive than retained storage and gave a 40-times difference in the guide available at the time; treat that ratio as vendor-published and time-sensitive, not a permanent rate.
- Billing and support: Check the service plan, support terms, billing relationship, and any Marketplace-specific fees for your chosen path.
How AWS Marketplace billing is described
Temporal’s AWS Marketplace page listed $50 per million Actions and a $100 monthly plan fee, prorated from the first billable Action, with monthly pay-as-you-go billing through the customer’s AWS account. Those are Marketplace-specific figures from the live page, not universal Temporal Cloud rates. Confirm the current terms directly on Temporal on AWS before estimating a bill.

Temporal’s materials describe workflows including order fulfillment, payment processing, customer onboarding, AI agents, and other long-running work. The model may suit an application that coordinates multiple steps across unreliable APIs or needs work to continue after process or infrastructure failures. Those are use cases and reliability claims presented by Temporal; they are not independent performance comparisons.
