In a rat demonstration, those signals coordinated sensors and neural interfaces to produce dual-limb motor control. The work is preclinical: it does not show that SWANS is available for people or ready to connect to existing medical implants.
How can implants communicate through the body?
SWANS, short for Smart Wireless Autonomous Networking System, sends transient electrical fields through tissue. Circuits in receiving devices are designed to respond selectively to pulses with particular characteristics, so a signal can act as a trigger for a specific device rather than as a general broadcast.
The study describes the implants as syringe-injectable and says they use negligible power while listening. It does not provide a numerical listening-power measurement, so that description should not be read as a battery-life estimate.
A trigger network, not a high-speed data link
The intended messages are simple and low-volume: for example, whether a condition is present or whether another device should act. A wearable hub handles larger data exchanges and computation. SWANS is therefore designed to coordinate devices, not replace higher-throughput wireless links for moving substantial amounts of data.

- COROS Heart Rate Monitor armband is designed for measuring heart rate during sports and activities. It is not intended to aid in collecting heart rate data for daily tracking purposes.
- Please note: this product includes a USB charging cable, but does not include a Type-C adapter. COROS Heart rate monitor with large band - Arm size (Large): 9.4 to 16.9 inches (24 to 43 cm)
- MULTIPLE CONNECTIONS: The COROS heart rate monitor chest strap is designed to work seamlessly with your COROS watches and apps, it can also simultaneously pair with up to three devices, including Sports Watches, Indoor Trainers, Bike, Computers, Phones, Apps, Treadmills, and Indoor Rowers. Connects via Bluetooth only, not compatible with ANT+.
- COMFORTABLE AND QUICK CLEANING: The fabric band is soft and breathable, more comfortable to wear than a chest strap. You can quickly clean the band by removing the sensor of COROS heart rate monitor chest strap .
- EASY TO WEAR and FLEXIBLE FIT: The band of COROS heart rate monitor lays flat around your arm and locks in place with its textured surface. Set the perfect placement and tension on the elasticated band by sliding the buckle.
Georgia Tech study senior author Alex Abramson described the placement flexibility this way: “With our system, you can now place sensors in the best possible place to detect a biological signal and place actuators in the best possible place to perform a therapeutic action.” He added: “They don’t need to be connected, aligned, or even near each other; they can just send signals to each other through the surrounding tissue.” (Georgia Tech, September 24, 2026)
What did researchers demonstrate?
The primary study reports an in-vivo demonstration in rats: coordinated networks of sensors and neural interfaces enabled wireless dual-limb motor control. Georgia Tech’s account describes a sensor detecting movement of a rat’s front paw and sending a trigger that caused another device to stimulate a muscle in its hind leg. That is a laboratory animal result, not evidence of human clinical performance.

The paper’s abstract identifies tests involving epidermal, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and gastrointestinal spaces. Those anatomical locations describe the study’s reported scope; they do not establish equivalent communication performance in people. The peer-reviewed study is Ramy Ghanim et al., “An in-body networking system for communication between wearable and implantable therapeutics,” Science 393(6818), 1322–1328, published September 24, 2026 (PubMed record).
How does SWANS compare with Bluetooth?
The study authors report more than tenfold greater tissue communication coverage than Bluetooth. The accessible study abstract does not give the detailed benchmark methods or test conditions, so the figure should be understood as the paper’s reported comparison—not as a general claim that SWANS outperforms Bluetooth in ordinary wireless networking.

Can a wearable tell an implant to stimulate a nerve?
The rat demonstration shows the general idea of a sensor-triggered neural interface: detecting movement at one site led to stimulation of a muscle elsewhere. It does not establish a treatment for people, or show that a consumer wearable can command an existing neurostimulator. Georgia Tech presents coordinated therapeutic action as an intended direction for the technology, not an achieved human-health outcome.
Abramson described the longer-term ambition, rather than a demonstrated capability: “Our ultimate hope is to be able to fully automate human health — to be able to deliver a therapy exactly when it’s needed, where it’s needed, and to do so in a coordinated fashion across the body.” (Georgia Tech, September 24, 2026)

Is SWANS tested in people or available to buy?
The cited study and university account describe preclinical animal research. They do not establish human trials, regulatory clearance, clinical benefit, a launch date, or commercial availability. No compatible consumer accessory or purchasable SWANS system is identified in the cited sources. The platform should not be treated as ready to connect existing pacemakers, insulin pumps, or neurostimulators in patients.
