What does “double-checking” mean in the operating room?
It can mean giving clinicians a hands-free or in-view way to consult information while they work. The examples reported so far fall into distinct categories: organizing an operating room and providing access to guides; wearing the headset during a procedure; and integrating it with surgical imaging. These are not all the same workflow, and none establishes that Vision Pro can judge whether a surgical step is correct.
Using the headset to organize an operating room
The Cromwell Hospital and eXeX example
In a March 12, 2024 announcement, Cromwell Hospital described working with eXeX on a surgical logistics and organization use of Vision Pro. The hospital said the headset provided touch-free access to operating-room setup information and procedural guides, and described its use in two microsurgical spine procedures. Its claim about a “first” use is the hospital’s own announcement, not an independently verified finding.
This is an organizational use: information about the setup and procedure is available to the team in the theatre. The announcement does not report a controlled comparison or show that the system reduced errors, shortened procedures, or changed patient outcomes.

What ExperienceX is intended to organize
TIME’s October 30, 2024 account described eXeX’s ExperienceX as a virtual map of surgeon-specific operating-room layouts, with an iPad version also available. eXeX founder and CEO Dr. Robert Masson characterized the environment as “controlled chaos” and said there was “massive room for organizational simplicity.” Those remarks describe the workflow problem the product aims to address, not measured clinical benefits. TIME reported that commercial availability was expected in 2025; that report does not establish current availability.
Using Vision Pro during procedures
An ophthalmic usability pilot
A pilot study first published online August 14, 2024, had 10 ophthalmic surgeons wear Vision Pro throughout eyelid malposition surgery. All 10 surgeons scored above 85 out of 100 on the System Usability Scale, a questionnaire about perceived usability. That is encouraging evidence about how this small group rated the experience; it is not evidence that the headset improved surgical performance or patient outcomes.

Cataract surgery with a digital microscope
A prospective, single-center feasibility study published in 2026 evaluated Vision Pro integrated with a ZEISS ARTEVO 850 3D digital microscope as the intended primary intraoperative visualization platform for cataract surgery. The study enrolled 45 patients. In 44 of 45 procedures (97.8%), the team completed surgery without a device-related conversion. In one case, a transient image interruption led the team to switch to backup visualization; the study reported no patient harm or surgical complication from that event.
The result shows feasibility in that particular setup and setting, not that Vision Pro is as safe or effective as conventional viewing. The study was single-center and single-arm, so it cannot establish comparative safety or clinical advantage, suitability for routine use, applicability across specialties, or the system’s ability to detect rare complications.

What Apple’s healthcare examples do—and do not—show
Apple’s March 11, 2024 announcement described healthcare app possibilities including clinical education, surgical planning, training, medical imaging, and behavioral health. These examples indicate the kinds of applications developers may build for the platform. They do not independently demonstrate that a particular app or surgical configuration is effective, safe, or cleared for a specific clinical use.

- Task: Is the goal operating-room organization, access to procedural information, or intraoperative visualization?
- Integration: How does the setup work with the existing microscope, imaging equipment, and operating-room systems?
- Backup: What conventional viewing or workflow is available if the headset image or connection is interrupted?
- Team workflow: How will staff learn and use the system without disrupting established responsibilities and procedures?
- Evidence and governance: What evidence applies to this exact configuration and specialty, and what local clinical review is required?
The cited studies do not establish regulatory status for every configuration described, so it should not be inferred from their feasibility results or from Apple’s general app examples.
