Concorde showed that commercial supersonic travel was possible; NASA’s X-59 is now researching quieter flight, not carrying passengers or opening routes for commercial service.
What makes a passenger jet supersonic?
“Supersonic” means moving faster than sound travels through the surrounding air. The FAA gives about 770 mph as a rounded comparison for Mach 1, while typical commercial airlines fly around 550–600 mph. These are useful reference points, not fixed conversions: the speed of sound changes with atmospheric conditions, so Mach 1 does not correspond to one universal miles-per-hour value. As an aircraft travels faster than pressure changes can move ahead of it, those changes form shock waves. The waves arise around multiple parts of the aircraft—including the nose, wings, engine inlets and tail—not just at one instant when it passes Mach 1.
How does a sonic boom reach the ground?
The shock-wave pattern moves along with the aircraft. As waves travel toward the ground, they combine into the pressure change heard as a boom. The boom is therefore not simply a sound made at the moment a plane “breaks the sound barrier”; it is the audible result of pressure waves formed during supersonic flight. People may hear the boom after the aircraft has passed out of view. What reaches a particular place depends on the aircraft’s shape, its flight path and atmospheric conditions. Listeners near one another may experience the same flight differently: the sound can be a sharp boom, two closely spaced booms or a softer rumble.
Why can’t supersonic jets fly every route?
Aircraft performance is only part of route planning. In the United States, civil aircraft generally may not operate above Mach 1 over land without an operation-specific authorization. That constraint can limit the routes on which an airline could cruise supersonically.

As of October 4, 2026, the FAA has proposed replacing the general prohibition with a noise-based framework, but the change is not final. The agency’s public page says it aims to finalize two rules by mid-2027. Until rules change, do not treat the proposal as permission for routine overland supersonic passenger service. What Concorde demonstrated—and what restricted its routes
Concorde is the defining historical example of passenger supersonic service. NASA dates its commercial operation from 1976 to 2003. Restrictions on supersonic flight over land in the United States and elsewhere narrowed its revenue-generating route options, showing why speed alone does not determine whether a passenger route is practical. What NASA’s X-59 can—and cannot—show
NASA’s X-59 is an experimental aircraft designed to produce a quieter sonic thump. Under the Quesst mission, NASA plans to fly it over communities, collect people’s responses and share the findings with regulators considering future noise standards. The purpose is to gather evidence about public response to quieter supersonic flight, not to certify a passenger aircraft or begin commercial service. NASA describes the mission on its Quesst Mission page.
The X-59’s research cannot establish that supersonic passenger flights will be acceptable everywhere, or that every future aircraft will sound the same. Any wider route access depends on the evidence, aircraft designs and applicable regulations.
