A stolen AI API key is not merely a leaked string: it is an active identity with whatever permissions the key carries. An attacker can use it remotely, run discovery loops against cloud APIs, submit model requests, create compute resources, and repeat those actions faster than a person could. That combination explains both “autonomous scanning” and sudden cloud bills. The practical defenses are rapid revocation, short-lived least-privilege credentials, enforced multifactor authentication, provider audit logs, exposure monitoring, and hard spending and rate limits.
What a stolen AI credential gives an attacker
“AI credential” is a broad term. It can mean a model-provider API key, an OAuth access or refresh token, a browser session cookie, a service-account key, or a cloud access key that can reach AI services. Each credential has an identity, permissions, quotas and, often, a billing relationship. Whoever presents it to an API may be treated as the legitimate account.
That is why changing a password alone may not stop the incident. A key stored in a source repository, a token copied into an agent configuration file, or a session cookie taken from a developer workstation can remain usable until it expires or is revoked. A cloud access key may also reach ordinary infrastructure such as object storage, content-delivery settings, virtual machines and container services, not just a model endpoint.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle Cloud documented UNC4899 using stolen host credentials to connect through the cloud command-line interface, enumerate compute instances and related hosts, locate cryptocurrency infrastructure and pivot toward theft. In a separate AWS intrusion, attackers used long-term access keys and then stolen session cookies to identify CloudFront and S3 resources and replace JavaScript with malicious code. These cases show that the credential, rather than the AI model itself, is the foothold.

How autonomous scanning turns one theft into many actions
Autonomous scanning does not require a science-fiction “AI hacker.” It means that software can perform the discovery and request cycle repeatedly after an attacker supplies a valid identity and a goal. Google Cloud’s H1 2026 threat report describes large-language-model assistance used to automate credential harvesting and move from a developer’s local environment toward cloud administration. The same report describes automated vulnerability scanning.
The following sequence is the common operational pattern:
- Obtain a usable identity. The attacker finds a key in a public repository, build log, developer machine, agent configuration, browser session or another compromised system. The credential may be human or non-human.
- Test the credential. A small API call reveals whether the token is valid, which account owns it, which regions or projects it can reach and what quota remains.
- Enumerate the environment. Cloud APIs can list projects, accounts, instances, buckets, functions, container clusters, networks, model endpoints and billing-related settings when the identity has those permissions.
- Select targets automatically. A script or agent ranks exposed services, reachable hosts, expensive model endpoints or systems likely to contain additional secrets. It can choose the next API call from each response.
- Probe and retry. The automation tests configurations, sends requests, handles errors, changes parameters and retries at scale. Rate-limit responses can trigger slower pacing or a different region.
- Pivot or monetize. A discovered secret can open another account. Compute can be used for cryptocurrency mining, model requests can be resold or consumed, and web assets can be altered for malware distribution or credential theft.
- Repeat until blocked. Without revocation, the loop continues on a schedule or whenever the attacker’s controller issues another task.
A human may have initiated the operation, but the repeated discovery, target selection, API calls and retries happen without a person approving each request. That is the useful, operational meaning of “autonomous” in this context.
Why cloud APIs make the loop efficient
Cloud control planes expose structured responses. An agent can parse a list of instances, feed names and regions into the next command, compare permission errors, and continue with whatever action succeeds. The same identity can be tested against multiple services because cloud permissions are often interconnected. If the key can create resources, the attacker does not need to compromise an existing server before spending money.

Agentic software also compresses time. It can run concurrent requests, remember which endpoints responded, and adapt its search based on each result. That does not grant permissions the key lacks, but it makes every permission more productive for the attacker and makes a narrow compromise visible across more systems.
What documented incidents show
UNC4899 and cloud-host reconnaissance
Google Cloud’s account of UNC4899 describes stolen host credentials used through the cloud CLI. The attackers enumerated compute instances and related hosts, looked for cryptocurrency infrastructure and then pivoted toward theft. The important lesson is scope: a stolen credential associated with one workload can reveal the surrounding environment when its role permits inventory or host access.
CloudFront and S3 tampering
In a separate AWS intrusion, long-term access keys were followed by stolen session cookies. The attackers identified CloudFront and S3 resources and replaced JavaScript with malicious code. Session theft therefore matters even when an organization believes its long-lived keys are protected; an already authenticated browser session can provide a second route into the same account.
Supply-chain and vulnerability automation
Google Cloud’s H1 2026 threat report links large-language-model assistance with automated credential harvesting, movement from a developer’s local environment into cloud administration, and automated vulnerability scanning. It reports that 21% of the cases covered involved stolen human or non-human identities. That percentage applies to the report’s stated period and dataset, not to every cloud incident.

How unauthorized use creates a large bill
The cost comes from two related paths: consumption of paid AI services and creation or takeover of ordinary cloud infrastructure. Both can run in parallel with reconnaissance.
| Abuse path | What the attacker does | Why charges accelerate |
|---|---|---|
| Unauthorized model requests | Uses a valid key to send prompts, embeddings, fine-tuning jobs or other billable calls. | Automated loops can issue many requests, use large input and output volumes, or select higher-cost models. |
| AI resource jacking (LLM-jacking) | Uses stolen cloud access to consume another party’s model capacity or provision resources for model workloads. | High-throughput workloads continue until quotas, alerts or the credential are stopped. |
| New compute resources | Launches virtual machines, containers or other services under the victim’s account. | Instances can be created across regions and left running after the initial intrusion. |
| Cryptocurrency mining | Deploys miners to EC2, ECS or other compute that the stolen identity can reach. | CPU-intensive instances consume continuously and may be replicated when detected. |
| Compromise of web delivery | Changes storage or content-delivery assets, such as JavaScript served through CloudFront and S3. | Incident response, traffic spikes and downstream compromise add costs beyond the original API calls. |
Sysdig’s 2024 threat research reported “$100,000+ lost per day to AI resource jacking” and described one victim charged “$30,000 in just three hours.” Those figures are reported incident examples, not a forecast for every exposed key. They demonstrate how quickly spend can outpace a normal development workload.
AWS reported a campaign that began on November 2, 2025, in which compromised IAM credentials targeted EC2 and ECS and deployed cryptocurrency miners. This is why an AI-key incident must be investigated across the whole cloud account rather than limited to model usage.
Why detection often lags behind the attacker
Billing dashboards are usually delayed, aggregated and separated by service or project. A small number of large requests can therefore appear after the activity has already stopped, while many smaller calls can look like ordinary traffic. Attackers may also spread requests across regions, identities or newly created resources.

Google Cloud reported that weak or absent credentials accounted for 47.1% of incidents in the first half of 2025, while leaked credentials represented 2.9% of initial access in that period. The categories and percentages come from that report’s dataset and should not be combined into a universal probability. They do show why prevention must address both poor credential design and actual secret exposure.
Useful signals include a new model or region being called, token volume that departs from a baseline, a sudden quota increase, key creation, policy changes, unfamiliar login locations, new service accounts, and compute launched outside the normal deployment pipeline. A billing alert alone is the slowest of these signals.
What to do when a key or token may be exposed
Containment should be deliberate but fast. Preserve evidence before deleting resources, then remove the attacker’s ability to act.

- Revoke every exposed path. Disable the API key, cloud access key, OAuth access and refresh tokens, service-account credentials and active sessions associated with the suspected identity. Do not assume that deleting one key invalidates a browser cookie or a second credential.
- Issue replacements with less authority. Create short-lived credentials limited to the exact model, project, action and region required. Separate build, deployment, production and personal identities.
- Stop active spend. Pause unauthorized model jobs, terminate unfamiliar instances and containers, remove persistence such as startup scripts or scheduled tasks, and preserve images or snapshots needed for investigation before destruction.
- Inspect for pivots. Search repositories, CI logs, build artifacts, developer machines and agent configuration files for additional secrets. Review newly created users, keys, roles, policies, buckets, functions and network rules.
- Harden the original exposure. Remove secrets from code and logs, rotate dependent credentials, patch the compromised workstation or build runner, and correct the access path that allowed the token to be copied.
- Contact the provider promptly. Supply timestamps, principal IDs, regions, request records and billing exports. Reimbursement is not automatic; it depends on provider terms, account controls, notification timing and investigation evidence.
Controls that limit blast radius before an incident
| Control dimension | Safer implementation | Riskier alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Credential lifetime | Short-lived tokens issued just before a task and automatically expired afterward. | Long-lived keys stored in files, notebooks or CI variables. |
| Permission scope | Least privilege limited to named projects, models, actions and regions. | Broad administrator rights shared by humans, agents and workloads. |
| Authentication | MFA for administrative and credential-management actions; require an existing factor before registering a new one. | Password-only administration or self-service factor enrollment after a single-factor login. |
| Detection speed | Real-time alerts for key creation, policy changes, unusual model calls, quota spikes and resource launches. | Periodic review of a delayed billing report. |
| Enforcement | Tested spending and rate limits, automatic key disablement for confirmed exposure, and deny policies for unapproved regions. | Soft warnings that do not stop requests or provisioning. |
| Coverage | One inventory and alerting process spanning every AI provider, cloud account, repository and CI system. | Controls applied only to the primary model account. |
The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends monitoring AI usage and credential changes and enforcing spending and rate limits. Limits must be tested: an alert that nobody receives, or a cap that can be raised by the compromised identity, is not effective containment.

Monitoring and secret-exposure prevention
Enable the cloud provider’s audit logs and route them to a system where attackers cannot erase them with the same compromised permissions. Alert on key and token creation, role or policy changes, quota modifications, unusual model calls, new regions, and resource launches that do not match deployment records.
Scan source repositories, build artifacts, developer machines, agent configuration files and CI logs for API keys, service-account keys and OAuth client secrets. Google Cloud says its credential-protection work identifies those exposed credentials and can automatically disable reported leaked keys. Automatic disablement should be paired with an owner notification and a replacement workflow so developers do not bypass the control with another unmanaged secret.
Keep billing exports and usage telemetry detailed enough to answer five questions: which principal made the call, which key or session authenticated it, which model or resource was used, in which region, and at what rate. Without those fields, a large invoice may confirm abuse but not identify the path that must be fixed.

Provider reports use different periods, definitions and datasets. The 21% stolen-identity figure from Google Cloud’s H1 2026 report, the 47.1% weak-or-absent-credential figure and 2.9% leaked-credential figure from its first-half-2025 reporting, and Sysdig’s 2024 cost examples describe specific observations. They are useful for prioritizing controls, not for calculating the probability or expected cost of a particular account compromise.
Likewise, there is no universal rule that a provider will refund fraudulent AI charges. The outcome can depend on whether MFA and spending controls were enabled, how quickly the organization notified the provider, what logs prove, and the applicable account terms.
Quick Recap
A practical readiness checklist
- Inventory every model key, OAuth token, session mechanism, service account and cloud access key.
- Assign an owner, expiration time, permitted actions, projects and regions to each credential.
- Replace long-lived shared keys with short-lived, least-privilege credentials.
- Require MFA for administration and credential changes, including registration of new factors.
- Set spending, quota and request-rate limits that the compromised identity cannot silently raise.
- Alert on unusual model volume, locations, key creation, policy changes and new compute.
- Scan repositories, CI systems, logs, workstations and agent files for exposed secrets.
- Test revocation, automatic disablement, billing exports and incident contacts before an emergency.
- Preserve provider logs and billing data during response so the responsible principal and resource can be identified.
