SteamOS Beta and Preview are testing channels, not permanent upgrades. On a Steam Deck, select them at Settings > System > System Update Channel, install the offered update, and reboot. To leave testing, select Stable and complete the normal update cycle. That returns the Deck to the current Stable stream; it does not restore an arbitrary historical release.
Before changing channels, record the channel and SteamOS version shown in System settings, synchronize cloud saves, and back up personal files. If the new image will not boot, try the boot manager’s Previous SteamOS entry when it exists. That entry normally selects the previous installed image, not a menu of every version you have ever used. If neither path works, use Valve’s current SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guidance and choose the least destructive option that matches the symptom.
What SteamOS Beta and Preview channels are
SteamOS channels are update streams. Stable is the normal production stream. Beta and Preview expose changes earlier, while Valve is still testing them across games, hardware, drivers, displays, docks and controllers. Valve’s release-note wording is explicit: “This update is for the SteamOS Beta and Preview channels, and includes new features that are still being tested.”
Channel names and the builds offered through them can change. For example, Valve’s announcement feed listed SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta on October 16, 2026, with fixes, security and stability updates, and developer changes. The post still identified Beta and Preview as testing channels. A version number or feature list therefore describes one point in time, not a promise that every future Beta or Preview build will behave the same way.

Stable
Stable prioritizes maturity and a predictable update path. It is the sensible choice for a Deck that is used as a primary console, shared with other people, connected to a living-room display, or relied on for travel. Stable can still receive bugs or regressions, but it is not intended to be the early testing stream.
Beta
Beta delivers changes before they are considered ready for Stable. It can be useful when a fix or feature you need has not reached Stable, but new regressions and changed behavior are more likely. A Beta build may affect a previously working game, input device, dock, display mode or system modification.
Preview
Preview is also a testing channel. Its exact position relative to Beta can vary as Valve changes its release process, so treat the label as an invitation to test rather than as a guarantee of greater or lesser stability. Read the release notes for the build offered to your Deck instead of assuming that Preview always contains a particular feature.

Prepare before changing the channel
A channel switch changes the operating-system image. It is not the same as changing a per-game setting, and you should be able to identify exactly what you changed if a problem appears.

- Record the starting state. In Game Mode, note the selected channel and the installed SteamOS version in Settings > System. A photograph of the screen is useful if the Deck later fails to boot.
- Synchronize important saves. Cloud saves and installed game files are separate from the OS image in the normal Steam Deck layout, but a channel change is still a poor time to discover that a save has not synchronized. Open the games you care about only after their cloud status is current.
- Back up personal files. Copy documents, screenshots, emulator data and other irreplaceable files from Desktop Mode to another drive or computer. Do not assume that every recovery option preserves every file.
- Record modifications. Note custom packages, plugins, themes, boot options and configuration changes. Do not assume that a different OS image will preserve every installed package or modification.
- Plan uninterrupted power. Keep the Deck connected to its charger and avoid interrupting an update or reboot. An interrupted write can create a boot problem that a normal channel change cannot fix.
- Read the offered release notes. Build-specific known issues can matter more than the channel label. If your Deck is needed immediately, defer the switch until you can recover it without losing access to your games or files.
Switch to Beta or Preview in Game Mode
The selector is available in the standard Game Mode settings. Use this exact sequence:
- Press the Steam button and open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open System Update Channel.
- Select Beta or Preview. Select Stable instead if your goal is to leave a testing channel.
- Return to the System update area and let SteamOS download the update it offers. Keep the Deck on power while the download and installation complete.
- Accept the reboot prompt. Do not force a shutdown while the update is being applied.
- After the Deck restarts, return to Settings > System and verify both the selected channel and the installed OS version.
- Test one change at a time: first basic Game Mode navigation, then a frequently played game, followed by your dock, external display, controller and other hardware. This makes it easier to identify which component exposed a regression.
The selector may offer a different build from the one described in an older article or screenshot. Build availability is time-dependent, so trust the channel and version currently shown on your Deck and the latest Valve release note rather than a remembered menu layout.
What rolling back actually does
Changing back to Stable
The normal, least-destructive rollback is to select Stable in Settings > System > System Update Channel, allow SteamOS to download the offered Stable update, reboot, and verify the result. This asks the Deck to move onto the current Stable stream. It does not promise to reinstall the exact Stable build that was present before you joined Beta or Preview, and it does not provide a historical version picker.
If the Deck is operating normally, this route should be your first choice because it uses the built-in update mechanism. Leave the Deck connected to power, wait for the update to finish, and avoid changing channels repeatedly while troubleshooting. Multiple channel changes can make it harder to tell which image and settings are responsible for a symptom.

Using the Previous SteamOS boot entry
Some Decks expose a Previous SteamOS entry in the boot manager. Community reports associated with Valve’s recovery guidance describe this entry as selecting the previous installed image. If you moved from Stable to Beta, the previous image may therefore be the Stable image that remains on the device.
This is not an archive of every release ever installed. It cannot be used to select an arbitrary old version, and the entry may be absent or labeled differently after a later update. Treat the behavior as observed rather than guaranteed for every build.
- Power the Deck off completely rather than merely suspending it.
- Open the Deck’s boot manager using the hardware-button sequence appropriate to your model and follow the on-screen boot-manager instructions.
- If Previous SteamOS is listed, select it and allow that image to boot.
- Once Game Mode loads, open Settings > System and record the channel and version now running.
- If the previous image works, copy or synchronize any files you need before attempting another update. Then decide whether to remain on that image temporarily or return to Stable through the normal selector.
Do not delete, overwrite or repartition an image merely because the channel selector is unavailable. If the boot entry is missing, fails to start, or produces the same fault, proceed to Valve’s recovery instructions.

Use the least invasive step that addresses the symptom. The exact labels in the recovery interface can change with SteamOS versions, so read each option’s data-preservation warning before confirming it.

1. The Deck boots, but you want out of testing
Use the channel selector to choose Stable, install the offered update and reboot. This is the ordinary rollback path and does not require recovery media or shell commands.
2. The new image is unstable, but the boot manager works
Shut down, open the boot manager and try Previous SteamOS if it is present. Once booted, verify the running version and back up files. Do not interpret a successful boot as proof that the image is permanently restored; it is the previous installed image, and a later update can replace or change the available entries.
3. The Deck cannot reach Game Mode reliably
Use Valve’s current SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting article as the authority. Match the documented option to the symptom and choose the least destructive choice that resolves it. Recovery menus can offer actions with different effects on user data, so read the description immediately before proceeding.
4. Both normal switching and the previous image fail
Follow the same Valve recovery guidance rather than downloading an undocumented image or running unofficial shell commands. The official procedure is the appropriate source for the current recovery image, button sequence and option names. Those details are version-dependent and may differ from instructions written for an earlier SteamOS release.

5. Before a destructive recovery
If Desktop Mode is still reachable, copy personal files to external storage first. Confirm that important saves have synchronized, and note any settings or modifications you will need to recreate. A recovery action can affect installed software, user configuration or local files even when the wording sounds similar to a reinstall, so do not click through without reading its stated preservation behavior.

Not through the channel selector. Selecting Stable targets whatever build Valve currently publishes to the Stable stream, not necessarily the build installed before your experiment. The same limitation applies in reverse: selecting Beta or Preview gives you the build currently offered to that channel, not a historical snapshot you choose by number.
The Previous SteamOS entry is narrower. It normally points to the previous image retained on the Deck, so it can be useful immediately after a channel change or update. It is not a catalog of old releases, and there is no basis for promising that it will retain a particular version after subsequent updates, storage changes or recovery operations.

Troubleshoot common channel-switch problems
The channel option is missing or does not change
- Confirm that you are in Game Mode under Settings > System, not looking at a per-game update setting.
- Restart the Deck normally, reconnect to a reliable network and check the selector again.
- Record the channel and version that remain selected. If the interface still refuses to apply the change, consult Valve’s current support instructions instead of repeatedly toggling the setting.
The update downloads but fails to install
- Keep the charger connected and ensure sufficient free storage for the update.
- Restart once and retry from the same channel, noting any error text.
- If the failure repeats, use the latest Valve release note and recovery guidance for that build. Avoid interrupting the installation or deleting system files manually.
A game, dock or display stopped working after Beta or Preview
- Confirm the installed OS version and channel before changing anything else.
- Test a second game or device to determine whether the issue is system-wide or isolated.
- Check the build’s known issues. If you need reliability more than the new change, select Stable and complete its update cycle.
The Deck boots to a blank screen or loops at startup
- Power it off fully and try the boot manager.
- Select Previous SteamOS only if that entry is available.
- If neither image boots, stop experimenting with channel changes and follow Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting procedure. Preserve files first whenever Desktop Mode remains accessible.
Choosing the right channel for your use

Use Beta or Preview on a device you can afford to troubleshoot. Keep a record of the version that worked for you, especially before testing a dock, external monitor, controller or heavily modified setup. That record will not create a rollback image, but it gives you the information needed to identify a regression and communicate accurately with support.
A safe operating checklist
- Write down the current channel and OS version.
- Synchronize cloud saves and back up personal files from Desktop Mode.
- Note custom packages, plugins, themes and boot changes.
- Connect the charger and use a stable network.
- Change the channel at Settings > System > System Update Channel.
- Install the offered update and reboot without interrupting it.
- Verify the channel and version after startup.
- Test games and hardware methodically.
- If testing causes trouble, choose Stable first.
- If the Deck will not boot, try Previous SteamOS when available, then use Valve’s recovery guidance and read every data-preservation warning.
Bottom line
Beta and Preview are useful for testing earlier SteamOS changes, but they trade maturity for access. The safest rollback is a deliberate return to Stable through the System Update Channel. That returns you to the current Stable stream, not necessarily the exact build you remember. The Previous SteamOS boot entry can provide the prior installed image, but it is not a historical version library. When both options fail, Valve’s current recovery documentation is the authoritative path; back up data first and avoid undocumented images or commands.
