Steam Next Fest is a weeklong Steam promotion for unreleased games with playable demos. It runs three times a year—in February, June and October—giving players a way to try upcoming titles and giving developers a concentrated period for discovery and feedback.
A demo does not automatically disappear when the Fest ends. The developer decides whether to leave it available, update it or deactivate it. For players, that means a demo may remain playable after the event, but there is no permanent-access guarantee.
What Steam Next Fest is
Valve describes Steam Next Fest as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” The event is designed around two audiences at once: players looking for games they can try immediately, and developers seeking exposure and feedback before release.
Each edition takes place in one of three recurring windows: February, June or October. The event is not a storefront sale and does not require a game to launch during the week. It is a discovery event built around demos for games that are still unreleased.

During the Fest, Steam highlights participating games through category pages, tags, recommendations and event programming. A developer can also choose to livestream the game, but livestreaming is optional; a playable demo is the central requirement.
Which games can participate
Eligibility is determined by the base game, not by the demo app alone. A project must meet all of the following conditions:
- The base game is unreleased.
- The game is associated with a Steamworks developer account in good standing.
- The base game has a published, public Steam store page.
- A publicly playable demo is available by the time the Fest begins.
- The project is not a prologue, chapter or short-form version of a game that has already been released on Steam.
Valve does not state a requirement that the demo be exclusive to Steam Next Fest, newly created for the event or a particular length. A developer therefore has flexibility over when the demo is built and how much of the game it contains, provided the public demo and the unreleased base game satisfy the event rules.
Each title can participate in only one Steam Next Fest. Developers need to treat the selected edition as a one-time opportunity rather than a recurring slot for the same game.
How developers register and publish a demo
Registration starts from the unreleased base-game app in Steamworks. The demo is a separate demo-type app attached to that base game, so creating or managing the demo does not replace the base-game store page.
- Prepare the base game. Make sure the unreleased game has a public store page and is connected to a Steamworks account in good standing.
- Create the demo app. In Steamworks, create a demo-type app associated with the base game. The relationship lets Steam present the demo as a playable version of the upcoming title.
- Build the playable content. Upload the demo build and configure the depots, launch settings and supported platforms needed for players to install and run it.
- Complete the demo store assets. Supply the description, screenshots, capsule art and other required store information so the demo can be listed publicly.
- Submit the build and store page for review. Valve checks that the build runs and that the features promised on the demo page work as described.
- Release the approved demo before the Fest begins. A demo that is still private cannot serve the public event audience. Publishing it also makes it available to ordinary Steam users, not only to people invited to an early preview.
The build review is a functionality check, not full quality assurance. It does not search for most bugs or certify that the game is polished. Developers remain responsible for testing crashes, saves, progression, controller support, accessibility and performance across their intended hardware.

What happens if the demo changes after review
Valve allows developers to continue updating the demo after it passes build review. The important operational limitation is that Steam will not review the update again. A post-review patch can therefore fix a problem or improve the experience, but it also puts the developer in charge of verifying that the new build still launches, contains the advertised features and does not introduce a show-stopping regression.
How Press Preview works
Press Preview is an early look for selected press outlets before the public event. It is not a private press-only version of the game. Press sees the same public store page and the same demo that general Steam users can access.
If a developer wants press to play during Press Preview, the demo must already be released. That requirement has a practical consequence: releasing for Press Preview also releases the demo to everyone on Steam. Developers cannot use the public Next Fest demo as a hidden build available only to journalists.
Press Preview should therefore be treated as an earlier access window to the public presentation, not as a separate testing environment. Any unfinished content, known limitations or unfinalized messaging in the public demo can be visible to both press and players.
How players discover games during the Fest
Developers select one or two primary categories for the base game. Steam combines those choices with the game’s tags to organize discovery and place it in relevant event areas.

- At the start: Steam says the first few days are randomized in most locations, so a game’s position is not simply a permanent ranking from launch time.
- Later in the event: Logged-in users receive carousels personalized from their behavior during the Fest. Games a player watches, opens or otherwise engages with can influence later recommendations.
- Across the event: Category pages, tags, demo pages and optional livestreams give players several routes to a title rather than one fixed list.
For players, personalization means two people may see different recommendations. For developers, accurate categories and tags matter because they help Steam place the demo in front of people whose browsing behavior indicates an interest in that type of game.

What players can do with a Next Fest demo
When a demo is live, a player can open the game’s Steam store page, select the demo option and install it like other Steam software. The demo is separate from the full game, so installing it does not mean the unreleased game has launched.
The exact amount of content varies by developer. Steam Next Fest does not impose a published demo-length requirement, and the event does not promise that a demo represents the complete game. A demo may be a short introduction, a self-contained slice or a substantial early section, depending on the project’s design.
Players should check the demo’s own page for supported operating systems, controller notes, accessibility information and any stated limitations. Those details are supplied by the developer, while Valve’s review only confirms that the submitted build runs and that promised features work.

When the event ends
The end of Next Fest changes the event promotion, not automatically the demo’s availability. Steam does not remove every participating demo when the week closes.
Shortly after each edition, Steam publishes a Wrap-up page featuring games with the most-played demos. A Wrap-up is a post-event showcase; appearing there is based on demo play activity and does not change the developer’s control over the demo app.
For the October 2026 edition, the event runs from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC-7) through October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC-7). Steam’s Wrap-up launches on October 26. Those times describe that edition only; February and June editions have their own published schedules.

Do Next Fest demos disappear after the event?
Not necessarily. Valve’s FAQ says that the developer decides what best fits its release strategy and encourages developers to consider leaving a demo up beyond the conclusion of the Next Fest they joined. Valve also notes that many players are disappointed when demos vanish immediately, so developers should communicate if they plan to deactivate one.

The practical post-event outcomes are:
| Developer choice | What players experience | Why a developer might choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the demo live unchanged | Players can continue downloading and playing the event build while the full game remains unreleased. | Continues discovery and lets people who missed the week try the game. |
| Keep the demo live and update it | The demo remains available, but its content or behavior can change after the event. | Applies feedback, fixes issues or brings the preview closer to the planned release experience. |
| Deactivate the demo after communicating the change | New players can no longer obtain it once it is disabled; existing local files may not remain usable if the developer changes access or the build. | Protects a release strategy, avoids supporting an outdated slice or replaces the demo with a later version. |
Valve does not impose an automatic removal date. If a developer plans to turn the demo off, its announcement timing and wording are the developer’s responsibility. A player who wants to try a particular demo should not assume that waiting until after the Fest will work.
Can the full game release during or before Next Fest?
The participating base game must be unreleased, and its full release must be after the applicable Fest for the title to qualify. The event is therefore a pre-release promotion, not a launch-week label. A developer can use the demo to build awareness and gather feedback while continuing toward a later full-game release.
The demo and the full game have separate availability decisions. Keeping a demo live does not force the developer to release the full game immediately, and deactivating a demo does not cancel the planned release. The base game’s release schedule remains its own decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should a developer release the demo?
There is no single best date; the right timing depends on whether the priority is learning, early press access or maximum event visibility. These are the main timing patterns:
Recommended Free Tools
| Timing approach | Primary objective | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Release well before the Fest | Gather early player feedback and discover technical or onboarding problems before the event. | The build may be less representative of the final event experience, and early attention can fade. |
| Release in time for Press Preview | Give selected press an early look at the same public demo and store page. | The demo is public as soon as press can access it, so unfinished material is exposed earlier. |
| Release shortly before the event launch | Present the most current build when the largest event audience arrives. | There is less time to react if the build has crashes, confusing progression or other serious problems. |
Whatever timing is chosen, the developer must leave enough schedule margin for build review, store-page preparation, installation testing and a contingency fix before the event opens. Passing review does not remove the need for a final production check, particularly because updates after review are not reviewed again by Steam.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Registering the demo instead of the base game
Next Fest registration is performed from the base-game app. Creating a demo app is part of the setup, but the unreleased base game is the title being entered.
Assuming a private press build is allowed
Press Preview uses the public store page and public demo. If the demo is available to press, it is available to all Steam users.
Treating build review as a complete test pass
Valve checks that the build runs and that advertised features work. Developers must perform their own broader testing for bugs, saves, performance, controllers, accessibility and platform-specific failures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Publishing a post-review patch without regression testing
Steam permits updates after review but does not review those updates again. Keep a tested rollback build and verify the exact public branch before announcing a major change.
Promising that the demo will stay forever
Availability after the event is controlled by the developer. If long-term access matters to players, the developer should state the plan clearly; if deactivation is planned, communicate it before the shutdown.
Assuming every game gets the same exposure
Steam’s early event discovery is randomized in most locations, and later recommendations are personalized. Categories, tags, a clear store page and a stable demo all help, but Next Fest does not guarantee a fixed placement or audience size.
A simple checklist for players
- Open the game’s base store page and confirm that the demo is currently offered.
- Read the demo description for platform, controller and accessibility details.
- Install and launch the demo while it is live rather than assuming it will remain after October 26, February or June’s closing date.
- Follow the developer’s announcements if you want to know whether the demo will stay available or be replaced.
- Remember that playing a demo is not the same as owning or launching the full game.
A simple checklist for developers
- Confirm the base game is unreleased, publicly listed and attached to a Steamworks account in good standing.
- Verify that the project is eligible for its one permitted Next Fest participation.
- Create the demo-type app from the base game and prepare the build and store assets.
- Submit early enough for review and leave time for a full internal test after approval.
- Decide whether Press Preview timing is worth making the public demo available earlier.
- Choose primary categories and accurate tags for discovery.
- Plan the post-event state—unchanged, updated or deactivated—and tell players before any deactivation.
- Keep the full-game release after the applicable Fest.
The key takeaway
Steam Next Fest is a one-time, pre-release opportunity for an unreleased game with a public, playable demo. Developers register through the base game, publish a demo app, pass a limited functionality review and use Steam’s categories, tags and recommendation systems to reach players. Press Preview does not create a private build. After the week ends, Steam publishes a most-played-demo Wrap-up, but the developer—not the event—decides whether the demo remains available. Players should try demos while they are live, and developers should set expectations clearly if access will change.
