Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a complete backup. A game uploads only the files its developer configured, usually after you quit, and Steam downloads those files before the game starts on another computer. Your actual save may still live in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, the game folder, or another location. To protect progress, identify that real save folder, copy it to an independent dated backup, and preserve the copy before resolving any Cloud conflict.

What Steam Cloud does—and what it does not do

Steam describes Cloud as storage hosted on Steam. In Steamworks documentation, Valve says: “Steam Cloud automatically stores files from your game on Steam’s servers so your players can log into Steam and access their saved games from any computer.” Steam Support similarly explains: “The Steam Cloud allows games and the platform to utilize cloud storage hosted by Steam.”

Those statements describe a synchronization service, not an automatic archive of every file associated with a game. The developer decides whether a game uses Steam Cloud, which files are included, where those files are found, and which operating systems can share them. A Cloud badge on a store page is a useful first check, but it does not tell you the exact save files or guarantee that every type of progress is synchronized.

  • A game may upload its main campaign saves but omit settings, screenshots, mods, profiles, or other custom data.
  • Two games installed through Steam can use completely different save locations and Cloud rules.
  • Steam Cloud can copy the newest synchronized version between computers, but it is not a browsable, versioned history of every earlier save.
  • Steam Support warns that it may not be able to recover lost saves or resolve a conflict after progress has been overwritten.

For that reason, treat Cloud as a convenience for moving configured files between machines. Keep an independent copy of the actual save folder before reinstalling, repairing a conflict, or changing computers.

How synchronization happens

Standard upload and download timing

For ordinary Steam Cloud integrations, files configured through Auto-Cloud or written through the Cloud API are replicated to Steam after the game exits. When you launch the game on another computer, Steam downloads the available Cloud files before the game starts. The practical sequence is:

  1. Start the game while online and load or create progress.
  2. Quit normally so the game closes its save files and Steam can detect the changes.
  3. Steam uploads the configured files after exit.
  4. On another computer, Steam downloads the Cloud copy before launching the game.
  5. The game reads whichever files its developer configured for that platform and save system.

Closing Steam or shutting down immediately after quitting can interrupt this process. Wait for Steam to finish synchronizing before switching machines, especially after a long session.

Dynamic synchronization

Some supported integrations can download changes during an active session. This dynamic synchronization is not universal: it depends on the game’s implementation. Do not assume that a save made while the game is still open has already reached Cloud. For games using the ordinary exit-based model, quit first and confirm that Steam has completed synchronization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offline play and delayed synchronization

Offline play commonly postpones synchronization. A local session can therefore create a newer local file while the Cloud still contains the last online version. When Steam reconnects, it may detect that both copies changed and display a conflict. An interrupted upload, an unexpected crash, or playing on more than one computer can produce the same situation.

Where Steam Cloud files and game saves are located

Steam’s Cloud-related userdata roots

Steam Support lists these default local roots for Cloud userdata:

Operating system Default userdata root What it represents
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata Steam account and appID folders used for Cloud-related staging
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata Steam account and appID folders used for Cloud-related staging
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata Steam account and appID folders used for Cloud-related staging

Inside userdata, Steam account folders contain game folders identified by the game’s numeric appID. These directories are useful when examining Steam’s staged Cloud data, but they are not a universal answer to “where is my save?” Copying an appID folder without knowing the game’s file layout can preserve the wrong data or miss the real save entirely.

The game’s ordinary save folder

Developers can store saves in many places, including:

  • Documents or a game-specific folder under the user profile.
  • AppData on Windows, including Roaming or Local subfolders.
  • Saved Games or an equivalent profile directory.
  • The game’s installation directory.
  • A developer-chosen location outside the usual folders.

Use the game’s documentation or support forum to identify the real save folder before copying, deleting, or restoring anything. The Cloud userdata path and the game’s ordinary save path may both contain relevant files, but they serve different roles and can have different timestamps or formats.

How to resolve a Steam Cloud conflict safely

A conflict means Steam found different local and Cloud versions. The dates shown in the conflict dialog tell you when Steam last changed each copy; they do not by themselves prove which version contains the progress you want. Follow this sequence before selecting either option.

  1. Quit the game. Do not leave it running while you copy or compare saves. A running game can rewrite files while you are examining them.
  2. Make a manual copy of the current local save folder. Copy the entire folder to an independent location, such as an external drive or a clearly named folder outside the game’s save path. Include the date and game name in the backup name.
  3. Compare the conflict timestamps with your play history. Identify which computer and session contains the campaign progress, characters, or settings you intend to keep. If you cannot identify the correct version, preserve both copies rather than guessing.
  4. Select deliberately in Steam’s dialog. Choose the local version when the desired progress exists on this computer; choose the Cloud version when the desired progress was last saved on another synchronized computer. The labels and dates are Steam’s comparison of the two copies.
  5. Open the game and verify the result. Check the save list, character level, quest state, or another concrete marker of progress before playing further.
  6. Keep the manual copy until verification is complete. Do not delete it immediately after the game appears to load correctly; a later sync or second launch can reveal a different issue.

Steam warns that ignoring an inability-to-sync message and launching can create conflicts and lost progress. If Steam cannot synchronize, stop and preserve the local folder rather than repeatedly launching and quitting.

Can you restore an older save after Steam overwrote it?

Sometimes, but only if another copy still exists. Steam Cloud is not a guaranteed version history. Once a newer file has replaced an older Cloud or local file, Steam may not provide a way to retrieve the earlier state. Recovery is possible when you have one of these sources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A manual copy of the save folder made before the overwrite.
  • An operating-system backup or external-drive copy that includes the actual save files.
  • A game’s own rotating or backup saves, if the developer implemented them.
  • A second computer that still has the desired local files and has not synchronized the unwanted version.

Restoring from a known-good manual copy

  1. Close the game and Steam’s game process completely.
  2. Copy the current save folder to a separate safety folder so the present state is not lost.
  3. Replace the game’s save folder contents with the chosen backup, preserving the same folder structure and filenames.
  4. Start Steam while connected, but do not accept a Cloud choice that would overwrite the restored local files.
  5. Allow the intended local version to be uploaded only after the game opens and the progress is verified.
  6. Keep the old backup until you have completed another launch-and-quit cycle without errors.

If the game immediately replaces the restored files, close it again and examine the Cloud prompt rather than continuing to play. A restoration is only successful when the game displays the expected progress and Steam has synchronized that state intentionally.

Local backups: the dependable protection layer

For a dependable backup, locate the game’s actual save folder and copy it to an independent destination, such as an external hard drive for PC backups. Retain multiple dated copies instead of overwriting one backup with the next. A useful naming pattern is the game name plus the date and a short description of the progress point.

  • Back up before installing a major update, changing mods, repairing files, or moving to another computer.
  • Back up after a meaningful milestone if the game has no reliable in-game backup slots.
  • Copy the whole save folder, not just one file whose name appears familiar; companion metadata can be required to make a save load.
  • Keep the backup outside the game’s normal save path so a Cloud sync, uninstall, or repair operation cannot remove both copies.
  • Test a backup by checking that it contains files with plausible recent dates and that the folder structure is preserved.

Steam’s Backup Feature is separate from Cloud

Steam’s Backup Feature is a different tool from Cloud synchronization. Its documentation includes \SAVE\ in the checklist for single-player saved games, but the tool supports games that fully download, install, and patch through Steam. Valve also cautions that its game backups may omit saved games and other custom data. Therefore, do not treat a successful Steam game backup as proof that your campaign saves are included. Copy the real save folder separately.

Will Steam Cloud saves work between PC, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck?

Cross-platform Cloud support is possible, but it is a developer configuration choice. Steamworks allows separate roots for different operating systems. If a game uses separate roots, each platform’s files are partitioned and do not provide cross-platform saves. A Windows save may therefore fail to appear on macOS, Linux, or Steam Deck even when the game has a Cloud badge.

Before assuming a save will transfer, check three things:

  1. The game’s Steam store page advertises Cloud support.
  2. The developer’s documentation says the relevant operating systems share compatible Cloud roots or Cloud API data.
  3. The save format itself is compatible across those platforms and editions.

Steam Deck uses the Linux side of this question, but the Deck label alone does not establish cross-platform compatibility. If a game uses separate roots or platform-specific files, make a manual copy and confirm the developer’s supported path before moving progress.

Troubleshooting checklist for missing or stale saves

The game starts with an old save

  • Quit without creating more progress.
  • Check whether the previous computer completed its upload after the game exited.
  • Look for a Cloud conflict and compare the displayed dates.
  • Inspect the game’s documented save folder, not only the Steam userdata directory.
  • Preserve the current local folder before selecting a Cloud option.

Steam repeatedly reports that it cannot synchronize

  • Do not ignore the message and launch repeatedly; Steam warns that this can create conflicts.
  • Quit the game and make a dated copy of the local save folder.
  • Record which computer contains the newest desired progress.
  • Resolve the conflict only after you have a recoverable local copy.

A save is missing on another operating system

  • Confirm that the developer supports Cloud between those operating systems.
  • Check whether separate platform roots partition the files.
  • Verify that you are using the same Steam account and game edition.
  • Locate the destination platform’s ordinary save path and compare its contents with the source copy.

You cannot find any save files

Search the game’s documentation or support forum for its save location and look in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, the installation directory, and other developer-specified folders. The numeric appID under Steam’s userdata path identifies a Steam game folder, but it is not a substitute for the game’s documented save path.

A practical routine for every single-player game

  1. Check the store page for the Cloud badge, then confirm the developer’s file and platform behavior.
  2. Play normally and quit while online so ordinary exit-based synchronization can complete.
  3. Find the actual save folder and make a dated independent copy before a migration, reinstall, repair, mod change, or conflict decision.
  4. When Steam presents local and Cloud choices, compare dates and progress, preserve the local folder, and select one version intentionally.
  5. Verify the game’s save list after the choice, then keep the backup until the next synchronized launch succeeds.

This routine separates convenience from recovery: Steam Cloud moves the files the developer selected, while your independent copies provide the restore points Steam Cloud does not promise.
